Thoughts on the 1 year vaccinations please ?

Positing on aibu in hopes to get more of a response .
my 1 year old has her 12 month vaccines on Wednesday, I wasn’t overthinking it until I seen TikTok’s of reactions to the vaccine , then all the comments saying how after the vaccine their child was having seizures, gave them health issues etc etc and how it is “literal poison” and that “they don’t make money if you’re not poorly, the vaccines are poison” also multiple stated they’ve never vaccinated their kids and they’re really healthy and never sick compared to those who have been vaccinated . My one year old is up to date with hers and now I’m absolutely dreading these one as obviously there’s 2 new ones she’s never had , am I massively overthinking this? I knowwww if she doesn’t get vaccinated she can get really sick, but then people telling me that it’s going to cause health issues, seizures, possibly Sid’s ? Is making me too scared to do it , I’m wondering if anyone has any experiences, and in hopes to reassure me that I’m doing the right thing by getting her vaccinated . I don’t want anything bad to happen to her I’m so scared . (Before anyone asks , yes I have bad anxiety as you’ll tell from my other threads lol) I don’t wanna pass it on to my daughter I just wanna do the right thing , thanks in advance

I am much older than you and a science related MSc and I still have a bit of vaccine anxiety for my kids. I know logically it is the best thing to do for them but obviously there are very rarely side effects and I worry in case we are the unlucky ones who have a bad reaction. Have a weird fear of flying since having them as well even through logically i probably but them at greater risk driving everyday. Humans are really bad at understanding risk properly basically and I hope you can find a way to manage your anxiety and not pass it on and make the sensible health choices for your DC. Also my DC had no adverse reactions and even a temperature at the 1 year vaccinations - my youngest didn't even cry at the injection!

FrancisSeaton · 28/10/2024 22:40

Did you not post the exact same thing about the three year jabs? It's getting very boring now

DeepRoseFish · 28/10/2024 22:39

I split them with mine as otherwise it would’ve been 4 injections in one go which seems brutal to me.

Waited a month or so for the other 2.

lanthanum · 28/10/2024 22:39

Sadly, some children will have seizures or other health issues. In some cases, that will happen for the first time when they are about 12-14 months. That does not mean that they were caused by their 12 month vaccines.

You won’t get discussion on here. Look up Robert F. Kennedy Jr speeches on the subject. He covers a lot

He's an anti vaccine activist and conspiracy theorist.

So you have looked up side effects of the vaccines. Now go back on tiktok and look up results on measles, mumps, rubella and the other very nasty illnesses your child may get from not being vaccinated.

Nah I reckon OP should go and watch lots of lovely baking, travel, bit of booktok, some good comedians and basically reset the algorithm with nice things.

It was people who have “researched” and was just commenting on TikTok’s , not doing my research on Tiktok !
im fully aware she needs them , but I have ocd and anxiety, one person comments their experiences and go anti vax, it does scare me ! But I will be vaccinating her again , I’m just so scared and people have scared me into thinking something bad will happen to her

Strangely, TikTok isn't full of people telling others how their kids have died of Measles, Diptheria, Tetanus, Polio, Meningitis, Whooping Cough, RSV, or how they lost babies due to in utero Rubella. No 'inspiring' 'Look how brave she is in her iron lung' or 'walking on her prosthetics due to both legs being amputated inn emergency surgery as a result of sepsis from meningitis (a far too common thing in the press in the 1990s prior to the meningitis vaccines becoming available) or covered with scars from Smallpox posts, either.

You know why? Because

a) most people get their kids vaccinated so they don't have these diseases,

b) most people get their kids vaccinated and herd immunity means the ones that aren't are less likely to come into contact with them/in the case of smallpox, it's been eradicated through vaccination and most of all,

c) there's no money in showing the consequences of antivaxxers' rhetoric, but shitloads in monetising scaremongering bollocks about one of the major factors in reducing infant and child mortality over the last couple of centuries.

Daisymae55 · 28/10/2024 22:32

TikTok is full of all sorts of crap. The bad thing is that once you’ve sat and watched one (probably bullshit) TikTok on vaccines you’re going to get inundated with them.

Tiktok is not a reliable source of information. Do not get medical advice or information from it.

Also, and I say this as someone with bad anxiety as well, please stop doomscrolling, get of TikTok and stop feeding your anxiety. One of the best things I did for myself

If it’s any reassurance, out of me and all of the other mums I know, none of our children have reacted to the one year vaccines

(in fact it’s one of the few that DD was 100% herself the whole time after)

Perhaps if you suffer from anxiety it would be a good idea to give TikTok a wide berth.

Flipzandchipz · 28/10/2024 22:30

TikTok is full of misinformation OP. If the 1 year injections actually caused side affects like this, do you think the NHS would continue the programme? There is a lot of conspiracy theory stuff online and weird people with agendas.

Japanese2024 · 28/10/2024 22:26

My child is perfectly healthy after all their vaccines. I'm so glad I got them and it also protects other kids they mix with.

My friends parents didn't believe in vaccines and she became very sick as a teenager. Entirely preventable by vaccines and they were extremely regretful

... noted immunologist Robert F Kennedy? No, because he has no medical or scientific credentials.

The anti-vaccine group he chairs had also campaigned against such horrors as paracetamol, and still pushes the thoroughly disproven "link" between vaccines and autism.

I'm up for discussion, but only if it's properly sourced. 🙂

MosaDiCello · 28/10/2024 22:26

@Ineffable23 I book marked your comment it was that good!

niclw · 28/10/2024 22:26

I forgot to say that side effects from vaccines tend to be the vaccine getting to work to build up immunity. I had the flu vaccine last week and my arm still has a large bump and is slightly warm but nothing major.

Heyheyitsanotherday · 28/10/2024 22:24

Please get her vaccinated. And then delete tik tok. Now you’ve looked the algorithms will feed you more conspiracy rubbish.
Speak to your gp or to your health visitor about any concerns. But please please vaccinate her. Mine had a high temperature the night after the vaccine but that was it. Nothing a cuddle and some calpol couldnt cure.

niclw · 28/10/2024 22:24

It was a few years ago now for my dc but I vividly remember the 8 week vaccinations side effects. I couldn't put my dc down without them screaming and they were a tiny hot water bottle. I barely moved from the sofa for the first 36 hours. So with regards to the 1 year vaccinations I was well prepared with calpol, snacks by side, box sets ready to go etc and yes there were side effects but only a slightly raised temperature and a bit grizzly. Otherwise it was a normal day.

LouH1981 · 28/10/2024 22:20

My advice, as someone who also has health anxiety and who has recently deleted TikTok because of scaremongering concerning the flu vaccine, is to definitely get her vaccinated.
My (vaccinated) 9 year old recently had whooping cough and he really struggled so I’d hate to think how a baby would manage.

If you have any concerns, write them down (so your mind can rest) and discuss them with the nurse at the appointment. It might give you some reassurance if you think you might worry afterwards xx

aww bless , was he bad with it even tho he was vaccinated ? Xx

I managed to breeze through my whole childhood without it despite being exposed loads of times, then caught it off my grandmother who had shingles when I was 21. It was horrific.

It's not cheap to have it done privately but I really regret not having DS1 vaccinated. He was properly unwell with it, with really deep blisters that were painful rather than itchy. Like I said, he still has the scars and a much higher chance of developing shingles later in life than his brother, who got vaccinated the first second we could get him done.

My family in Australia are always shocked at our attitude to chicken pox in the U.K., it's been part of the vaccine schedule there for about 20 years now. They think we're a bit barbaric with our "just something kids have to suffer through" view.

I had my two privately vaccinated through Boots in the U.K. Cost just under £200.
So glad I did, for the reasons you mentioned above.

MosaDiCello · 28/10/2024 22:22

OP I'm sorry you're feeling anxious about your child's immunisations and to be honest it is scary trusting someone with your child's health. Have you spoken to your GP about your worries, you are entitled to ask questions and tell the nurse if you are worried and why. These immunisation protect your child from getting those nasty diseases that can potentially cause developmental problems to your child or even worse...

Speak to your GP to ease your anxiety about them.

Mercedes45 · 28/10/2024 22:21

If your anxiety is this bad you need to stay away from social media.

igglepigglegingin · 28/10/2024 22:20

I'd be more anxious skipping or delaying the vaccines.
DC3 was ill a lot and he didn't have them until 14 months and I was banging the GPs door down!

The diseases are what you should be frightened of. Research those.

Shows you what I know, I didn’t even know there was a chicken pox vaccine ?! Is it worth getting that ? I can’t remember ever getting it , I had chicken pox when I was around 7/8 years old it wasn’t too bad !

You've looked at a skewed group of anti vaccinators, and now your feed will be filled with of this. Look at medical research.
