Thinking it’s weird that his 18 year old will have the master room

grizzleGrazzle · 28/10/2024 04:38

My DP and I have been together for 4 years, now my only child has moved out for good (24, bought a flat with his girlfriend up north). My DP and I have decided I will move in.
He has a gorgeous 4 bedroom house and currently his 18 year old has the master bedroom, she is at uni in the city so has no plans to move out but the room has a massive walk in wardrobe and large en-suite. The next bedroom is still large and has an en-suite but no walk in wardrobe.
Tonight I suggested that since I’m moving in we maybe switch the bedrooms around and he looked at me like I’d lost my mind. To me it doesn’t make sense for two adults to share a slightly smaller room with less storage space.
The other 2 bedrooms are currently a guest room and an office and he’s saying I can have storage in the office for more clothes.
AIBU to think it’s weird that his daughter will keep the master?

I can't stand troll posts. We have enough stuff happening in the world without reading mumsnet stuff outside of here.

Also it opens up wounds for the posters who knew how it felt to be treated differently by step parents. I felt sorry for the genuine posters who had replied.

Is this a fake/troll thread?

I wouldn’t be surprised as someone moving from a £250k house to a £2.5m one and complaining just doesn’t sound realistic to me. Every bedroom in that house is going to be decent, unless the property is in Mayfair where £2.5m would barely get you a garage.

CaptainMyCaptain · 28/10/2024 07:41

I haven't read the whole thread but you are being completely unreasonable expecting his daughter, who lives there already, to give up her room. The next step, presumably, would be to get her to move out altogether.

5128gap · 28/10/2024 07:39

You have lost you mind. Couldnt you imagine for a second how that would go down with them? I've arrived now! Make way! You will have the whole house at your disposal. His DD has a room and a bathroom for her own. For goodness sake, think. If you want this to be anything but a disaster, check your entitlement.

HRTQueen · 28/10/2024 07:39

Don’t be surprised if plans change around your move in date

This would certainly raise questions for me and I guess by his reaction it has for your dp too

His ex was before her, too but that doesn't mean she should play second fiddle to anyone if she is "it" in HIS heart. Good grief there is a boundary that needs to be laid down: we are the adults and you are not, therefore this is the plan: we need more room than you. I cannot IMAGINE having my clothes in separate closets, either. Ridiculous.

Who is not an adult?

redskydarknight · 28/10/2024 07:38

Sheri99 · 28/10/2024 07:32

No, it is not HER home, it is HIS home. She is a young woman of 18 not a six year old. TWO adults need more room than an 18 yo girl, who is in a transition to independence elsewhere (her own place hopefully). This man's reaction says it all: he expects his girlfriend of FOUR years (!) to play second fiddle to an 18 year old.

Absolutely 2 adults need more room.
That's why they also the lounge, dining room, study and 4th bedroom to use as they wish.

Meantime, the 18 year old only has her bedroom.

18 year olds are not generally in transition to anywhere these days due to cost of independent living; i would imagine she might be living with her father for quite a few more years to come.

TheoriginalMrsDarcy · 28/10/2024 07:37

Just because you're moving in with this guy goes not mean you are automatically entitled to have the largest bedroom with ensuite and walk in wardrobe. The daughter was here first. You will always take second place.

If you're not careful you will be 'last in, first out'.

BunnyLake · 28/10/2024 07:36

Your entitlement would be concerning to me. You’re going from a £250k house to a £2.5m and you’re complaining.

I sense trouble ahead.

No it’s not weird that the daughter has the master, not weird at all. Young girl, lots of clothes, likes space. Dad still has his own en-suite. It’s interesting you are moving in and thinking it’s weird and daughter should move rooms, it’s her home and was before you.

What a load of bollocks.

It is her home.
It's more her home than OPs home.
oP has ZERO claim on that house, none, nothing at all.

  1. why are you selling your house? You should keep it and rent it out unless you are getting married you will leave yourself in a vulnerable position

  2. YABU to try and oust her from a room that she and her DF have agreed makes sense. You are moving into a house he owns.

  3. read 1) again

therewasafishinthepercolator · 28/10/2024 07:34

Aaaah, the Take a Break stuff makes sense.

Op was coming across as fantastcally ridiculous.

Silly me, I fell for it. Well, that's good news. I was feeling so sorry for some poor 18 year old who was about to have a tonedeaf bombshell dropped on her. 😁

OctopusFriend · 28/10/2024 07:34

No, it's the daughter's home. She lives with her dad. A girlfriend moving in doesn't take precedence.

Maddy70 · 28/10/2024 07:33

You cant move a girlfriend in and remove the daughter from her bedroom

Im glad he said no. Who the fuck are you to dictate what happema with his daughter? You need to think about appropriate boundaries

Sheri99 · 28/10/2024 07:32

beetr00 · 28/10/2024 04:46

oh dear! this does not bode well for his daughter. This is her home.

WhimsicalGubbins76 · 28/10/2024 07:31

It sounds worryingly like you want to assert authority over his daughter.
This is his house, and her home. You have no rights here, but you are going to alienate yourself from her if you don’t act with more care.
My 18 year old DS has the largest bedroom too. At their age it’s not just a room, it’s a social space where they host their friends. You’re being very unreasonable here op.

I think so too!!

He claims it’s because she uses her room more and he only really sleeps in his. He also has an office where as she has to study from her room too. It’s odd to me but whatever I guess!

We won’t be able to buy together this home is worth like 2.5 million in north London, I’m selling my £250,000 home to move in!

Talk about biting the hand that feeds…

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 28/10/2024 07:28

Why are you selling your home ?
surely you would want to rent it out or buy another.

what about your future ?
where will you live if you split up ?

therewasafishinthepercolator · 28/10/2024 07:28

It doesn't matter if you think her having the master is weird. That decision has been made and it is HER room. (And I don't think it's that's weird - decision based on needs / uses of rooms.)

It's a bit shitty that you think it's OK to put her out of her room because you feel more entitled to it.

And it's not like you're being put in a box room. Your room will probably be vastly superior to most people's master.

If I were you I'd say nothing about it lest I sound insensitive and grabby.

Why does it seem odd to you? Two adults aren't sharing a smaller room. They are sharing a house and sleep in a room. You have the use of the office, his daughter doesn't. It makes perfect sense for her to have a bigger room where she both sleeps and studies while two of you have the use of the rest of the house.
My grandparents have a 4 bed flat. The master bedroom was always my mums since she was 4 years old. They sleep in the second biggest bedroom and have a use of the adjacent office with plenty of storage space.

skippy67 · 28/10/2024 07:25

Mind your own business.

MassiveOvaryaction · 28/10/2024 07:25

YABU to expect to change the status quo just because you're moving in.

Are you planning on letting it go now he's told you that or will you be a dripping tap to her, constantly letting her know you're unhappy she's got the 'better' room and you deserve it more?

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 28/10/2024 07:22

London22 · 28/10/2024 07:04

You've posted already under a different name 'asofcati'.
Only in this post you mentioned that the daughter had the second largest room, the house was brought together after you sold your home and moved in with your two sons. In that post around 8pm last night, you was complaining that her lifestyle is fully funded by her father (your DP) with designer clothes etc and it wasn't fair. She had lost her mother and there was money left over for her. But her dad was still taking care of her and she was working as an apprentice and making 24k.

I'm inclined to believe that you're a made up post, looking for traffic for a certain newspaper. But if you're not, why are you so against his own child. You sound very resentful of her.

And they didn't get the support they wanted and only replied to those who supported her view, failed to answer anyone who questioned her.
