Vibrators on sale at Tesco, thought it was a bit much

Went to buy some toothpaste with my kids, 7 year old wants to see new toy in plastic boxes, it’s rows and rows of vibrators. Is it just me or is this a bit much for the weekly shop?

That's why I don't think it's fair that people who would draw the line before vibrators are being cast (by some) as Victorian-era prudes.

This is the sort of area where everyone has their line. I'd imagine that some who are okay with vibrators being sold, in fairly discrete packaging, would be more troubled by the butt plugs (on sale in Sainsburys) posted a few pages back - particularly as the packaging (with the "deep and deeper" and "play" packaging).

For me, the logical place to draw the line would be before sex toys of any sort, even if some are more clearly "over the line" than others.

I'm actually based in Canada (though from the UK and visit regularly) and your point re. alcohol and tobacco wouldn't work where I am. Supermarkets don't sell alcohol. Many don't sell tobacco products but even those that do have them in opaque cabinets where they cannot be seen (I think this is now the case in the UK, too?). Vibrators, on the other hand, are openly displayed and often in close proximity to all-age or children-targetted products. I do find it a bit weird.

What a refreshingly sensible opinion. Some of the posts here are wild.

Never seen them in my Tesco's.....I may complain.

I don't know, I've asked but no-one had explained how making the point about hypocrisy around sex and alcohol is creepy

A discreetly packed vibrator is not the same as a full blown gimp suit. Even I draw the line there

how do you control all external triggers for conversation without keeping your children in the house at all times and removing access to tv, radio and the internet? Kids see and overhear inappropriate things every single day, when they’re young it goes over their heads and as they get older you can have a ready supply of stock phrases like “that’s for grown ups” or “ask me about it when we get home”. (To give you time to come up with an age appropriate explanation).

I recently bought a bullet vibe in Asda, it was on the shelf with condoms. Scan and shop on my phone with some cat food. Of course the checkout selected me for a “random” scan check, but the assistant and I got through it without spontaneously combusting. I actually forgot that until this thread reminded me.

Sorry but catfood condoms and a vibrator is a really funny shopping basket 😂

The point of parental controls on devices with access to the internet is to prevent exposure to sexual content before a certain age and sex toys aren't advertised on TV or radio in kid hours as far as I have seen for the same reason. There is clearly, and correctly I my opinion a converted effort to keep this stuff away from kids.

Bangwam1 · 27/10/2024 23:22

I’d cringe buying a sex toy in Tesco. It’s somewhere with families, so not really necessary either. It doesn’t fit so on that note, yanbu

But you are happy for them to sell other adult (and non-adult) products, all of which are far more harmful than a few sex toys.

Aisles and aisles of sugar-filled products, booze and tobacco - all of which destroy thousands of lives each year, and you think that a couple of tiny vibrators hidden away with the boring medical stuff is the problem?

Careful
You're now a creep too

Except YOU keep mentioning me being reported, which leads to deleted posts.

Mentioning that you've been reported does not lead to admin deleting your posts. People reporting your posts does that. I haven't reported you, but other posters have. Raise that with them.

Other than that, we have no common ground and I suggest we leave our communication there.

Warz · 27/10/2024 22:40

No. Wrong again. MartinCrieffsLemon said that I'd referred to their deleted post. I haven't.

In your opinion. I agree with her. External triggers for a conversation topic removed the power to bring it up in your own time.

but this is the whole point: yes of course sex is to be enjoyed between consenting adults. But sex is two bodies, as its most fundamental. Sex toys are a choice, not essential for sex or for pleasure. And if there are vibrators on the shelf, why stop at that? Why not a whole array of accessories? Why not nipple clamps etc? Would they not also then be fine? Why not a bondage section next to the imported sausages?

Yup. I'm also on the receiving end of "I see the poster who seems to understand you extremely well, yes. We can all see them."

And again, that's despite me making repeatedly clear that I don't think sex toys should be in supermarkets. I am not on the same side of this argument as @MartinCrieffsLemon but what Warz is doing is disgusting.

Because you can disagree and see my point like an adult

Thank you

AcceptAllChanges · 27/10/2024 23:07

I'm not that bothered about kids seeing them, because the world is already saturated with sexual imagery in a way it really wasn't 50 years ago. It's a bit like expecting children to grow up to mid-teens without ever hearing someone swear.

I do feel a bit weird, though, that shoving manufactured items inside every orifice seems to be expected of us all nowadays. I know I sound like Mary Whitehouse saying this, but I wish we could go back to the days when everything didn't revolve around sex.

I'd feel happier about the situation if I really believed that it had naturally evolved through gradually liberating ourselves from the hangups of the past and choosing pleasure in a healthy way. It just doesn't feel that way. It feels more like the insidious influence of marketing bullshit, which has infiltrated and corrupted our lives. I find it sad, not joyful, that intimacy is now just another product to sell us.

?? supermarkets are not sex shops, in my clearly deeply upsetting opinion.

I gave up at page 7. It was becoming like a trip to Downton Abbey.

I was asking if you realised what you’d said. Only things essential for sex or pleasure.

Therefore vibrators fit your description.

They are selling dildos in my Tesco's. Bloody massive scary ones too.

Well, it is nearly Halloween……

I hope you appreciate the irony of suggesting bandage stuff might be found next to the imported sausages.

I might put this thread forward for classics if that isn't too wanky.

do you think I would not have said that about sausages as a bit of a joke? words really fail me.

No, the irony was not lost on me. In fact, I deliberately created it as a humorous comment. ...

Condoms are for protection and contraception, you’re right.

For when people are fucking for pleasure.
