Vibrators on sale at Tesco, thought it was a bit much

Went to buy some toothpaste with my kids, 7 year old wants to see new toy in plastic boxes, it’s rows and rows of vibrators. Is it just me or is this a bit much for the weekly shop?

In Iceland you can only buy alcohol in vinbudins which are dedicated government owned alcohol shops, only open for a couple of hours a day with a purchasing limit. No corner shops or supermarkets sell alcohol. Apparently it's because they had a lot of problems with alcoholism so the government is now super strict on it.

My husband was devastated 😂

It’s big supermarkets or an off license in NI! All the corner shops in England selling their bottles of wine and tinnies would be a no go.

I think they've started selling them to encourage self check-out!!

Omg lol lol lol

But you know it's going to be a tiktok trend soon.

ThatLemonViewer · 27/10/2024 17:45

Yep and now we have to see people's asses in thongs. Lovely

Accessible sexual pleasure for all!

Sex is normal, masturbation is normal. Getting upset because there are things on sale in a supermarket that you don’t want to buy and can’t work out how to explain to your own children (although I doubt they’d ask)…not normal.

Honestly I think a lot of people could do with picking one up with their weekly shop.

Condoms are contraceptive devices and therefore a health care product. Vibrators are sex toys and not a health care product.

The male equivalent of a vibrator would be a fleshlight, not a condom.

But also condoms aren't just for males. I mean, the male wears it, but it protects the couple whether that be two men or a man and a woman.

SerendipityJane · 27/10/2024 17:43

I wonder where Waitrose display them ?

These aren't vibrators. They are M&S vibrators

Discolites · 27/10/2024 17:42

Completelyjo · 27/10/2024 17:13

I mean really what’s the difference between that and condoms?
One is for males and one is for females making it therefore so much more lewd?

Condoms just for men and comparable to a sex toy? What? I don't see the issue with them selling them but what a strange comment!

I'm just wondering if you order one on your online shopping and they are out of stock whether you get Gary from the warehouse as your substitute!

Doesn’t brother me. I’d probably have bought one but the thought of putting one through the till with my milk and bread makes me cringe 🤣

They are not particularly standing out. Can’t same I’m bothered by them.

Why? I guess because I’d feel awkward serving someone buying that.. It just seems such a private thing 🤷‍♀️ Also men potentially making young female staff uncomfortable on purpose..

Think education and culture are most important towards promoting safe sex, but at my Tesco pharmacy is literally in the same store not really a barrier, anyone mature enough to be having sex should definitely be able to overcome this “obstacle”

They should, yes.

There are plenty that probably aren't though.

viques · 27/10/2024 17:39

JustBrowsingTheWeb · 27/10/2024 17:17

I guess if I could pick I’d probably put condoms behind the pharmacy counter too, I get that people may want to buy these items it’s just that as a parent I want to choose when my kids hear about these things rather than just get exposed to them.

I take it your kids are young! When they are a bit older you will be glad they can nip into a supermarket to put a packet of condoms in their basket without having to ask the pharmacist.

Ilovelurchers · 27/10/2024 17:39

From a feminist point of view, a vibrator is an object that primarily exists in order to promote female sexual pleasure. So I would say it's positive that women's sexuality and sexual enjoyment is seen as a reasonable every day thing, available as part of the weekly shop, rather than something sordid to be hidden away.

My daughter is old enough to already know what a vibrator is, but if she had seen one in Tesco when younger and asked me to explain I would have done in an age appropriate way so just as happily as I would have explained condoms, had she asked.

You'd put condoms behind the counter, making it more likely that your children, when teenagers, will feel too embarrassed to ask for them? Potentially making unprotected sex more likely?

StarSlinger · 27/10/2024 17:38

Do you have to get approval for them at the self service check out?

Needmorelego · 27/10/2024 17:38

@bravefox some of them still sell DVDs.
Apparently they also sell these horrible things called The Daily Mail and The Sun.
Urrgh.

Baconandddddeggs · 27/10/2024 17:38

‘No toys today darling - let’s go and chose a pizza’

total non issue unless you make it one !
