Vibrators on sale at Tesco, thought it was a bit much

Went to buy some toothpaste with my kids, 7 year old wants to see new toy in plastic boxes, it’s rows and rows of vibrators. Is it just me or is this a bit much for the weekly shop?

I think it's a bit grim. Sexual health products such as condoms and pregnancy tests are one thing, but "Suction Simulator" (from PP's photo)? I felt a bit queasy even looking at that, and it's definitely not something I want to explain to my kids at this stage.

What next - blow-up dolls? Handcuffs and ball gags? No thank you. What people get up to in their private lives is precisely that - private - and I dislike the creeping normalisation of private practices into the public sphere.

This.

Completelyjo · 27/10/2024 18:47

@shuggles First of all, condoms are not "for males." Condoms are a health item for protecting against STIs in both men and women, and for protecting against unwanted pregnancies in women.

Vibrators are a pleasure item only, not a health item. People can have their opinions as to whether they should be in supermarkets, but drawing a comparison between condoms and vibrators is extremely strange and bizarre.*

What are condoms for if not for pleasure-only sex? Your argument is completely flawed, condoms aren’t a health item without the sex, which is apparently your hang up about vibrators. Avoiding pregnancy through sex only leaves doing it for pleasure surely so tell me again how different they are?

shuggles · 27/10/2024 18:47

Magnastorm · 27/10/2024 18:41

If you are having sex with protection - so without the aim to get up the duff - then by definition it's solely for pleasure.

Otherwise, to be honest, you are doing it wrong.

Edited

The alternative to having sex with a condom is having sex without a condom.

Sex without condoms has an increased risk of infection and unwanted pregnancy compared to sex with condoms.

Therefore, condoms are a health item.

Stop being obtuse.

Condoms are for birth control, dildos are a sex toy and I don't want to pick one up with my weekly shop 🤷‍♀️

AgileGreenSeal · 27/10/2024 18:44

“It’s not like they’re selling dildos…”

don’t give them ideas!
gap in the market and all that 🤦‍♀️

I'm sure Bad Dragon would love some shelf space

There’s anal bleaching kits for sale at my local Tesco.

You’re shitting me?

I think it's appalling.

It will make girls and women think they should use and enjoy them.

It normalises them too much imo.

Oh no

Girls and women might discover and own their own sexual pleasure

The horror

It’s not like they’re selling dildos. You’re talking about those little bullet things. They’re not offensive objects.

Didn’t we just have this thread a week ago…

We've been having this thread since Boots introduced nearly 20 years ago 😆

The correct comparison would have been between vibrators and fleshlights, as both of these are for masturbation. I have not seen any fleshlights for sale at Tesco.

They’re a health item to protect against pregnancy and STI.

Only needed for having sex. For pleasure.

They're great for keeping your matches dry when camping I read once.

😂
A woman enjoying sex?? What next!? The vote?
Much better for them to view sex as an obligation chore they owe their husbands!

Completelyjo · 27/10/2024 18:37

I love all the people commenting that thankfully their local Tesco haven’t … have you been looking then? Because they aren’t going to have 10ft posters at the front of the store!

GeminiGiggles · 27/10/2024 18:37

Would they not sell better placed next to the cucumbers? 😇

IKEAJesus · 27/10/2024 18:37

Onehappymam · 27/10/2024 18:35

Not convinced you’d be able to drink your flat white out of this.

Doesn’t look dissimilar at first glance to one of the wankier (pun intended) drip coffee machines so I think you could probably get away with it.

Ot just distract, as others have said.

Pureasthedrivensnowww · 27/10/2024 18:36

And what is an appropriate response if your child points to a penis pump and asks ‘What’s that?’

Something adult men use during sex. Honestly. What is tough about it?

Why shouldn't girls and women (or anyone, for that matter) enjoy using sex toys?

I don't care at all if Tesco sell them. If your kids ask questions, just have an age-appropriate discussion about it. It's not hard.

Joystir59 · 27/10/2024 18:35

Brilliant. Off to the supermarket tomorrow.

PandorasJam · 27/10/2024 18:35

I get a special discount on my weekly sex toy shopping at Tesco with my clube card.

shuggles · 27/10/2024 18:35

Completelyjo · 27/10/2024 17:13

I mean really what’s the difference between that and condoms?
One is for males and one is for females making it therefore so much more lewd?
