Vibrators on sale at Tesco, thought it was a bit much

Went to buy some toothpaste with my kids, 7 year old wants to see new toy in plastic boxes, it’s rows and rows of vibrators. Is it just me or is this a bit much for the weekly shop?

It's not a biggie.

Though I'd probably need one 🥴

Wheredidileavemycarkeys · 27/10/2024 19:15

🤣

elderflowerspritzer · 27/10/2024 19:14

Vibrators have been available on supermarket shelves for at least 15-20 years. This is not a new thing.

I guess if I could pick I’d probably put condoms behind the pharmacy counter too, I get that people may want to buy these items it’s just that as a parent I want to choose when my kids hear about these things rather than just get exposed to them.

It is vitally important to the sexual health & wellbeing of the general population that condoms are easily accessible and not closed off, this is a ridiculous thing to say.

Would you also like your children to be exposed to young/ underage pregnancy because they're too embarrassed to ask the person behind the counter for a condom?

Completelyjo · 27/10/2024 18:39

@valentinka31 I think it's appalling.
It will make girls and women think they should use and enjoy them.
It normalises them too much imo.

😂
A woman enjoying sex?? What next!? The vote?
Much better for them to view sex as an obligation chore they owe their husbands!

honestly, I find this response extraordinary even for MN.

My point is only that sex toys are not necessary for female sexual pleasure. And having them in the supermarket suggests them, makes them seem like something all/most girls/women and their partners if included should consider using or, worse, feel the need to use. It says: it is right/good/what you should do.
I don't of course have the slightest issue with people who want to using sex toys. But do with them being in a family supermarket. They are designed for sexual pleasure - this is what feels out of place in Tesco.

It's not something that should be effectively pushed by a family supermarket, imo. I find it upsetting - and the responses here only confirm this - that women are made to feel as if they know nothing about pleasure if they are not using sex toys.

It's just wrong. And BS>

Mosalahiwoukd · 27/10/2024 19:12

‘I don't need a battery-powered fake penis to discover and own my sexual pleasure.’

IMHO you don’t often hear penis and women’s sexual pleasure mentioned together!
You’re missing the point , massively

Mosalahiwoukd · 27/10/2024 19:10

Honestly, can’t imagine the quality would be any good! Go to a proper site for that sort of thing…

And I wouldn't want my daughter or other girls/women to feel that somehow they should like this. It's a form of subliminal pressurising, imo.

You may not

Do NOT shame the women who do

You better not be telling/insinuating to your daughter she shouldn't be liking sexual pleasure from sex toys.

And, FYI, sex toys for women are more than just "battery powered fake penises"

Lwrenn · 27/10/2024 19:09

It's brilliant progress, women having enjoyable sexual experiences shouldn't be a dirty secret.
I'm not sure if you can still buy top shelf magazines full of naked women with how readily available it is for free now but I managed to cope seeing women being treated like objects (and I believe Samantha fox was 16 posing topless in the s*n newspaper) without being scarred, I'm sure a few innocuous bits of plastic won't scar the children until they're old enough to understand and can be taught women enjoying sex isn't shameful.

If you’re having such casual sex that you don’t know whether they have an STI or not how is that not just for the purpose of pleasure??

The sex is (presumably) aimed at pleasure. The condoms are aimed at preventing illness.

Compare: the staying up all night at the party is aimed at fun. The vitamins you take in the morning are aimed at trying to stop the all nighter catching up with you and making you ill.

On other words, Tesco doesn't care how or why you have gotten ill or might get ill. It's just there to sell you a health solution.

And what would be wrong if they did like it?

It’s all sounding very Victorian.

Also do you even know what a vibrator is? Because it’s not a fake penis.

Ok, but who cares about you in this context.
Some women dont need them and some do and enjoy it a lot. Hopefully your daughter does not have to ask you for your permission if the wants to use a vibrator and you dont use sublimial pressuring on her to condition her to think some forms of pleasure are dirty just because you dont approve.

DyslexicPoster · 27/10/2024 19:08

I wonder who buys them in store? They need removal from a security box ( me and dh was sniggering looking for covid tests). What the ideal shopping basket combination? They are on top shelf with sex stuff. I think it's grim tbh but neither do I take my kids to pick out lube and condoms so they don't go near that stuff.

A vibrator is infinitely better than any penis - real or fake! Honestly don’t knock it til you’ve tried it.

valentinka31 · 27/10/2024 19:06

MartinCrieffsLemon · 27/10/2024 18:45

Oh no

Girls and women might discover and own their own sexual pleasure

The horror

Completelyjo · 27/10/2024 19:05

VivianLea · 27/10/2024 19:01

That's not entirely accurate. Many people use them specifically to avoid STIs. They're like vitamins or COVID masks in that respect, preemptively stopping you from getting sick.

I'm sure you think you have a point, but fuck me if I can work out what it is.

Condoms enable sexy pleasure. Vibrators enable sexy pleasure. Ultimately they are for the same thing. Sometimes - gasp - people might even use both of them at the same time.

30 years ago or whatever I'm quite sure people were getting all up in their bums about condoms being sold in supermarkets too.

Well yeah, obviously I think I have a point, or I wouldn't bother posting! To be clear, I don't disagree with vibrators being sold in tesco's, seems like a perfectly sensible place to sell them to me.

My point is that since "sexy pleasure" falls broadly under health (specifically sexual health), it's fair enough to have them in the isle by the vitamins.

AcceptAllChanges · 27/10/2024 19:03

I do feel nostalgic for the days when we weren't expected to be getting our rocks off every 5 minutes. Especially as neurosis about sexual attractiveness/performance is used to sell us shit we don't want or need.

justasking111 · 27/10/2024 19:02

The rise in STI's in post menopausal women is a grim statistic. With all the online dating, casual sex I would certainly want a partner to wear one.

Magnastorm · 27/10/2024 19:01

VivianLea · 27/10/2024 18:57

I'll explain. People who want to have sex, tend to have sex. If they don't want to get STDs or get pregnant then they use condoms.

You might as well say that vitamins are for pleasure because the alternative to taking vitamins isn't a lowered immune system, it's eating carrots. Tampons are for pleasure because the alternative isn't bleeding everywhere, it's using rabbit skin.

I'm sure you think you have a point, but fuck me if I can work out what it is.

It’s not really Tesco’s fault if you end up with a shit shag though is it?
The point of condoms is to remove the functional aspect of it, making a baby, and leave only the recreational activity.

That's not entirely accurate. Many people use them specifically to avoid STIs. They're like vitamins or COVID masks in that respect, preemptively stopping you from getting sick.

How about banning condoms or even having sex altogether, like this you will never have to have the difficult convo with your kiddies.

Maybe talk to your kids about sex rather than cover their eyes in Tesco and wait until they are 18 and know it all from elsewhere.

Many people would not want to go and ask for condoms etc over the counter, they are not prescription drugs and should be widely available without assistance, as they are now.

Completelyjo · 27/10/2024 19:01

Won’t someone please think of the children!?

JenniferBooth · 27/10/2024 19:00

Maybe next we can have male sex toys, so that men and boys can also have sexual pleasure.
