Went to buy some toothpaste with my kids, 7 year old wants to see new toy in plastic boxes, it’s rows and rows of vibrators. Is it just me or is this a bit much for the weekly shop?

Nobody should be ashamed of masturbation but I would argue that you can having a perfectly good sex life without buying multiple accoutrements.

You might argue that. Others would disagree. Happily they are on sale for those who want them. You aren’t obliged to put one in your basket.

Completelyjo · 27/10/2024 19:32

Fuck me imagine finding it “upsetting” at being able to buy a tiny vibrator in Tesco.
Get a grip.
These things have been available in supermarkets for decades as have flavoured or tingling Iube, which again is only for pleasure!

You must have been upset every time you’ve been in a boots or supermarket most of your adult life.

Needmorelego · 27/10/2024 19:31

@valentinka31 magazines are a dying media method these days but supermarkets have been selling them since supermarkets were invented. I don't mean "top shelf" ones but Cosmo and their "Ten Ways To Please Your Man" and all that.
Generations of mothers have managed to make sure their children avoided seeing those while picking up their copies of the Beano.
Not everything in a supermarket is for "families" 🙄

I guess if I could pick I’d probably put condoms behind the pharmacy counter too, I get that people may want to buy these items it’s just that as a parent I want to choose when my kids hear about these things rather than just get exposed to them.

Oh give over. You really should be having open conversations with your kids about sex as soon as they start questioning things or even sooner and that includes things they may happen across in stores, on tv etc. You can do this tactfully and age appropriately of course. You can also just say ‘I’m not sure what that’s for’ and ‘ let’s stop taking things off the shelves’ if you feel they are too young to know some things.

Teenagers may be reluctant to go to the cashier to ask for condoms, therefore creating barriers to safe sex. And yes, it will be your teens that are afraid to ask for them because you’re likely not having open conversations with them about sex.

@Missmarple87 God the replies from the cool girls are so ridiculously obtuse.

Are all supermarkets run by cool girls then?

No they're run my capitalist marketeers who've seen straight through the likes of you and are laughing all the way to the bank! Which was my point.

MartinCrieffsLemon · 27/10/2024 19:31

And again - you don't have to explain in detail what a vibrator is. The box doesn't exactly have a huge vagina being rogered senseless by the vibrator on it... they're usually quite discreet. A quick "they're for adults" is the explanation

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 27/10/2024 19:31

They’ve been sold there for a few years now. A bit rubbish the vibrators.

OurLadySaphire · 27/10/2024 19:30

In my store they are under the ‘stop smoking’ banner which tickles me

Missmarple87 · 27/10/2024 19:30

JenniferBooth · 27/10/2024 19:29

Are you equally as scathing about mens pleasure as you are about womens pleasure?

Where was I scathing about women's pleasure?

God the replies from the cool girls are so ridiculously obtuse.

Having sex toys for sale, and clearly on display, in a supermarket is just so unnecessary. Consenting adults can easily buy them elsewhere, others who'd rather not see them, or have their children see them, do not need to.

People making jokes about brown bags and dodgy backstreet shops seem to forget that this wasn't 100% about sex being shameful....it was also about not exposing children to inappropriate things.

Sex positivity is one thing but suggesting that a)children should be explained to about vibrators (WFF?!) and b) vibrators are a normal part of a sex life is extremely odd to me. Nobody should be ashamed of masturbation but I would argue that you can having a perfectly good sex life without buying multiple accoutrements. And of course, that's the only things Tesco care about. People BUYING stuff. As if they give a stuff about female pleasure. The sex toy industry only exists to make you think you need to buy stuff.

Are you equally as scathing about mens pleasure as you are about womens pleasure?

Completelyjo · 27/10/2024 19:28

You could argue that vibrators are more effective than condoms for preventing STIs and pregnancy.

BoobyDazzler · 27/10/2024 18:49

Presumably your kids are adults now if your reference was video store 🤣

I suppose it was a DVD store by the time I had kids! None of them exist any more though, my youngest has no idea there were stores to rent DVDs.

If she's anything like my mother she'll be turning over every inch of her bedroom and reading her diary regularly.

Jesus. I’m sorry that happened to you.

How will you prevent your daughter from owning a vibrator when she’s older?

Think education and culture are most important towards promoting safe sex, but at my Tesco pharmacy is literally in the same store not really a barrier, anyone mature enough to be having sex should definitely be able to overcome this “obstacle”

Lots of teenagers might not be, that won’t stop them having sex though. Contraceptives should be totally accessible.

lovealongbath · 27/10/2024 19:25

Just had a look, some are part of the club card deals, win win!

MartinCrieffsLemon · 27/10/2024 19:25

valentinka31 · 27/10/2024 19:14

honestly, I find this response extraordinary even for MN.

My point is only that sex toys are not necessary for female sexual pleasure. And having them in the supermarket suggests them, makes them seem like something all/most girls/women and their partners if included should consider using or, worse, feel the need to use. It says: it is right/good/what you should do.
I don't of course have the slightest issue with people who want to using sex toys. But do with them being in a family supermarket. They are designed for sexual pleasure - this is what feels out of place in Tesco.

It's not something that should be effectively pushed by a family supermarket, imo. I find it upsetting - and the responses here only confirm this - that women are made to feel as if they know nothing about pleasure if they are not using sex toys.

It's just wrong. And BS>

Edited

Ah yes because everything in a supermarket means it MUST be for everyone to use or they're abnormal

That's why we have margarine, lard and butter in. 10 types of cheese. Olives even though none of us remotely like them

Because they're in the supermarket so must be brought by everyone

You certainly SOUND like you have a problem with people who use sex toys else you wouldn't have an issue with them appearing "right/good". They are normal and can (and do) hugely enhance sexual pleasure. Being in a supermarket is just "hey these are available and are acceptable to buy if you want"0

I don't need a battery-powered fake penis to discover and own my sexual pleasure.

And I wouldn't want my daughter or other girls/women to feel that somehow they should like this. It's a form of subliminal pressurising, imo.

I’m not sure what sort of penises you’ve seen, but this looks nothing like one to me. It’s also rechargeable, no batteries required Wink

You know what’s ‘subliminally pressurising’? Teaching your daughters that using sex toys, should they wish to, is wrong. You might not want to use a sex toy, and that is entirely your prerogative, but there’s nothing wrong with someone else choosing to use them. Even if that is your own daughter.

Honestly, can’t imagine the quality would be any good! Go to a proper site for that sort of thing…

They're Love Honey products though

Sex toys are a part of sex too. So are condoms.
None of it is really necessary since people can choose to abstain.
It’s bizarre to get so pent up about seeing either in a shop.
There was a time when condoms weren’t displayed on the shelves either.
Maybe stick to an online grocery shop if you’re so easily offended.

I assume the comment you responded to, was itself, in response to the previous poster who said that a vibrator was the same as a condom. They seemed to have been a little confused.

Our DS10 said the strawberry live looked nice in Savers and what was it. I said it was to make kissing taste nice! My DH was a lovely shade of red as he didn't know what to tell him!

Scottishdreams1991 · 27/10/2024 19:17

Had a quick look at tesco app and couldn't help but laugh at the brought next item 😂
