Vibrators on sale at Tesco, thought it was a bit much

Went to buy some toothpaste with my kids, 7 year old wants to see new toy in plastic boxes, it’s rows and rows of vibrators. Is it just me or is this a bit much for the weekly shop?

The point of my post was that they are extremely readily available elsewhere. And we used to agree, as a society, that we should be discrete about sex in places accessible to children. This was for very good reason. I would argue that 'accessories' should hardly be the front line of explaining health, normal sex lives to young people.

Why do you need to buy your sex toys with your onions?

I’ve got 4 children and vibrators have been on the shelves in high street shops for years. Not once have I ever had to explain what a vibrator is to any of them following a visit to a shop.

If any of them did ask, I simply say it was something for an adult to use. Easily done and no need for any pearl cluthcing.

Hardly the same thing is it 🤦🏻‍♀️

What do you use condoms for if not for sex?

Missmarple87 · 27/10/2024 19:41

Candledr · 27/10/2024 19:36

Lots of adults enjoy sticking things up their arses 😂 relax

Bloody hell. Do you not realise how awful hearing about that can be to a child who is not old enough to even remotely understand? How scary it could seem?

Needmorelego · 27/10/2024 19:41

@Missmarple87 do you think supermarkets should also stop selling alcohol, cigarettes, vapes, lottery tickets, scratch cards etc.
These are "adult" products that no one actually needs.
So take them out of the supermarket.
But then you don't need crisps so they can go. And chocolate bars. Frozen pizzas. Even paperback novels or toys or felt tip pens.... anything that isn't basic meat, fruit+ veg, bread, dairy......
But then it wouldn't be a supermarket any more. The whole point of supermarkets is convenience. Everything under one roof. I don't want to have to go to 8 different shops for a weekly shop.

Newsenmum · 27/10/2024 19:41

Omg that’s hilarious. If it’s ‘ok’ then so are fleshlightd I suppose! As long as they are all within the adult section away from children.

GroovyChick87 · 27/10/2024 19:41

I don't think it's a big deal. The ones on display are usually quite discreet for what they are, pocket vibes and mini bullets etc. You won't find any obscenely realistic plastic penises whilst picking up your bread and milk.

TheHighPriestess1 · 27/10/2024 19:40

Completelyjo · 27/10/2024 17:13

I mean really what’s the difference between that and condoms?
One is for males and one is for females making it therefore so much more lewd?

Hardly the same thing is it 🤦🏻‍♀️

Why do you need to buy your sex toys with your onions?

Why do you care if people do?

Quite amused at the faux horror about a shop that sells bananas,. cucumbers, courgettes and butternut squashes also happens to stock a small range of adult toys ....

Not to mention....aubergines

AlwaysGinPlease · 27/10/2024 19:40

It's just so cheap and tacky. Those saying it's no big deal are likely the type that think Ann Summers parties are " a hoot" it's a mindset of certain people.

MartinCrieffsLemon · 27/10/2024 19:39

I would argue not shaming people for using toys and explaining why they might be useful is a part of explaining normal, healthy sexual relationships.

And I'd imagine buying them whilst supermarket shopping is the same as the reason for buying things like notebooks, shoes and paint whilst supermarket shopping. Convenience.

Who on earth is laughing at someone buying a sex toy other than a 13 year old boy??

I think you're hard of understanding.

They're laughing because they have very comprehensively convinced you of the need to buy lots of plastic crap as part of a 'normal, healthy sex life'.

Someone earlier on said they would tell their child 'thats something men use during sex'. Wtaf?! This is not how we should be approaching conversations about sex with young people.

Warz · 27/10/2024 19:38

My POV is that isn't complicated: condoms are for contraception and protecting health. Kids learning about that is important. Young people being able to access them easily is vital.

Sex toys are about adults seeking sexual pleasure, and therefore they do NOT need to be normalised for young kids. That POV is absolutely nothing to do with women enjoying sex and sex toys, and I find it baffling that people keep conflating the issue.

JenniferBooth · 27/10/2024 19:38

Anyone else remember Jamies Dream School There was a scene in the staff room where they were discussing sex education and whether female pleasure should be mentioned. A TEACHER couldnt say the word clitoris without giggling.

I went down the party aisle and found some straws to clutch

Don’t get this. Are you thinking about clutching pearls?

Nobody should be ashamed of masturbation but I would argue that you can having a perfectly good sex life without buying multiple accoutrements.

You might argue that. Others would disagree. Happily they are on sale for those who want them. You aren’t obliged to put one in your basket.

Oh give over. You really should be having open conversations with your kids about sex as soon as they start questioning things or even sooner and that includes things they may happen across in stores, on tv etc. You can do this tactfully and age appropriately of course. You can also just say ‘I’m not sure what that’s for’ and ‘ let’s stop taking things off the shelves’ if you feel they are too young to know some things.

Teenagers may be reluctant to go to the cashier to ask for condoms, therefore creating barriers to safe sex. And yes, it will be your teens that are afraid to ask for them because you’re likely not having open conversations with them about sex.

Buying condoms 40 +years ago was a nightmare for a teenager... glad things have moved on.

Completelyjo · 27/10/2024 19:35

@valentinka31 It says: it is right/good/what you should do.
I don't of course have the slightest issue with people who want to using sex toys

You don’t have a problem with them but don’t want anyone to think it’s “right or good”?

Mysterian · 27/10/2024 19:34

They already sell cucumbers, courgettes, corn on the cob and watermelons...

Where was I scathing about women's pleasure?

I have already said this but i will repeat myself for the hard of thnking.

When you get older and enter perimenopause/ menopause you need something with a bit more oomph and power to have an orgasm.

Bignanna · 27/10/2024 19:33

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 27/10/2024 19:31

They’ve been sold there for a few years now. A bit rubbish the vibrators.

Could you get your money back?

Completelyjo · 27/10/2024 19:33

Missmarple87 · 27/10/2024 19:31

No they're run my capitalist marketeers who've seen straight through the likes of you and are laughing all the way to the bank! Which was my point.

Who on earth is laughing at someone buying a sex toy other than a 13 year old boy??
