Vibrators on sale at Tesco, thought it was a bit much

JustBrowsingTheWeb · 27/10/2024 17:10

Went to buy some toothpaste with my kids, 7 year old wants to see new toy in plastic boxes, it’s rows and rows of vibrators. Is it just me or is this a bit much for the weekly shop?

You've done it 3 times. I also meant it generally about all the posters

And I genuinely don't know why. Because, like I've said repeatedly, I don't think kids should see live demos etc or need explanation beyond "it's for adults".

My Jewish grandmother had a saying: "when 6 doctors tell you that you're sick, you lie down."

Nothing at all, but they shouldn't be told they should.

Who is telling women they should use them?

Just because something is available doesn’t mean it’s compulsory.

I went down the party aisle and found some straws to clutch

Are you confusing the phrases "clutching at straws" and "pearl clutching"?

GivingUpFinally · 27/10/2024 20:43

I just wanted to say you're an absolute hero . One of the best replies of all time. Bravo. Genuinely, dying with laughter.

the phrase is clutching pearls, not straws. So the 'joke' doesn't work.

Can't believe ppl are so blase about this, and equating the visibilty of sex toys to vapes or alcohol. Parents generally have control over when and how to discuss topics like sex and having sex toys on prominent display in what should be neutral public space undermines that control.

AdviceNeeded2024 · 27/10/2024 18:20

What’s wrong with women and girls using and enjoying them…. Genuinely I’m curious…

Nothing at all, but they shouldn't be told they should.

honestly, I really don't know where I said that people can't choose them. I just said putting them in a family supermarket is something I don't agree with.

And penis or whatever, it's a tool for stimulation. So ridiculous to fix on the odd word and try to make that into the argument. It's a detraction from the point. Which is that I think it's wrong to normalise artificial stimulation rather than letting adults choose that if/when they want. In Tesco where kids and young teens can see it does give it a kind of endorsement.

You literally said in one of your previous posts that ‘it normalises women and girls using and enjoying them’

MartinCrieffsLemon · 27/10/2024 22:02

Warz · 27/10/2024 21:53

Your mistake. I've done it once, I believe - maybe twice at most? Other posters have called you weird and creepy, as well, I believe. You're getting confused.

I don't think you're in one shred of doubt why you're getting accusations, either.

You seem to think they shouldn't be exposed to sex at all because it's "adult"

And I was clarifying, for the posters like you who keep calling me creepy, that I don't think children should be exposed to sex beyond their age. You asked what that meant so I clarified.

No. Do not make stuff up and attribute it to me.

I've said that young children shouldn't be exposed to adult sex toys or their place in adult sexual relationships.

You disagree, and you've chosen a particular style of communicating your beliefs that have led to me and other posters finding your posts creepy and unsettling.

It's not complicated.

justasking111 · 27/10/2024 22:01

Thinking about it children are more likely to stumble across sex toys rooting around for hidden Christmas presents.

Or as one poster commented on her shock at clearing out her late parents house and finding them hidden at the back of the wardrobe.

SwingTheMonkey · 27/10/2024 19:22

How will you prevent your daughter from owning a vibrator when she’s older?

I really don't know how to make this plainer, in English:

I am not saying anyone can't buy a vibrator (including my family members - that's their business). BUT I don't like them being present on a shelf where kids and young teens can see them.

valentinka31 · 27/10/2024 21:59

WetBandits · 27/10/2024 19:21

I’m not sure what sort of penises you’ve seen, but this looks nothing like one to me. It’s also rechargeable, no batteries required Wink

You know what’s ‘subliminally pressurising’? Teaching your daughters that using sex toys, should they wish to, is wrong. You might not want to use a sex toy, and that is entirely your prerogative, but there’s nothing wrong with someone else choosing to use them. Even if that is your own daughter.

honestly, I really don't know where I said that people can't choose them. I just said putting them in a family supermarket is something I don't agree with.

Carouselfish · 27/10/2024 21:57

@Pureasthedrivensnowww yes, the key words you've used are age appropriate. At 9 they haven't yet done the mechanics of sex at school. That will be next year.
Wanking and tools developed for it is not on the agenda for a while.
And from several other posts it's not just discreet bullets at all!

MartinCrieffsLemon · 27/10/2024 21:56

Warz · 27/10/2024 21:51

What have young kids seeing sex toys in Tescos got to do with children being taught about sex and relationships in the right setting, with age-appropriate content?

To balance it out for the sake of equality, fleshlights for men need to be on sale too!!! 😀

They are RTT

Warz · 27/10/2024 21:51

MartinCrieffsLemon · 27/10/2024 21:46

It means "children" covers a very big age range and at different ages children should be exposed to a level of "sexual content" as they begin sex education at school. Building from "healthy relationships" to "safe sex"

Where is the misrepresentation? It's literally reading what they have typed and calling it creepy.

Their argument: "isn't it a bit hypocritical that people are aghast at the idea of supermarkets exposing kids to the existence of sex toys, when those same stores also promote things like alcohol, tobacco and gambling which are not age appropriate and even more harmful?".

Your implied response: "You're a nonce".

BobbyBiscuits · 27/10/2024 21:49

@MartinCrieffsLemon in that case it sounds fairly reasonable. Though I guess they could still ask questions. And often they're bright colours and shiny so a kid could find it intriguing looking!

Tesco already stocks cock rings.

So does Poundland

What does that sentence actually mean?

It means "children" covers a very big age range and at different ages children should be exposed to a level of "sexual content" as they begin sex education at school. Building from "healthy relationships" to "safe sex"

Reserved101 · 27/10/2024 21:46

Carouselfish · 27/10/2024 21:40

What I find worse (and I agree OP, it is quite odd to have sex toys in a supermarket. Cock rings next?) is when newspaper bill boards on the street have CHILD PORN in massive letters as a headline. At child height. That any reading age child can be smacked in the eyeballs with. So many massive problems with that.

Tesco already stocks cock rings.
