Scanning error in supermarket - conundrum

Scannerscammer · 27/10/2024 12:35

Just idly wondering about people's opinions on something that happened the other day...

Lately every bloody time I've been to the supermarket there has been an annoying time-wasting issue such as discounts advertised on the shelf not registering at the checkout (so I had to go and check, and take picture of the ticket price), the self-service machine playing up and objecting to every item I tried to scan (so I kept having to call over the assistant) - the usual irritating nonsense.

The last time I went, a few days ago, I just had a couple of items to pick up and did self-scan on my phone. One of the items (a bottle of orange juice) scanned as a totally different item (a bottle of washing liquid) even though I had been nowhere near the aisle with laundry products.

I'm afraid I thought, fuck this, I am not wasting yet more of my time because the supermarket wants to save money by getting its customers to take on the job of scanning and checking out products but can't get it to work properly. So I paid for the two items which I had scanned and went on my merry way, having saved about a pound.

Am I a terrible thief who deserves to burn in hell and eat out-of-date value pork pies for the rest of eternity, or would you have done the same thing?

Obviously if I hadn't noticed it's one thing but if I did notice I wouldn't have taken it when it scanned wrong. I would have found a member of staff and sorted it.

I don't mean to sound sanctimonious but I feel like justifying things like this are a slippery slope.
There is no grey area, it is wrong.

Ordinarily so would I, but I was tired and fed up with similar things happening.

I do wonder where one draws the line. If the ticket machine isn't working at your local railway station should you be entitled to board anyway with the possibility of ending up with a free journey, or is the onus on you to walk to another nearby station thus adding x amount of time to your journey in order that you can purchase a ticket?

It wouldn't have occurred to me that was a mistake, I'd assume they were on clearance and had forgotten to mark them up.

They were new 🤣

BiffandChip2 · 27/10/2024 13:55

On the contrary here I bought an Asda cushion that was £9 ish and it scanned at £1.

I sent my husband back to buy 3 more before they realised!

lazyarse123 · 27/10/2024 13:58

I have just retired from a supermarket and quite often have let customers take items that won't scan for whatever reason. They care nothing for their staff (despite all their wellbeing bollocks) so I feel the staff owe them nothing.
All supermarkets would coin it in if they spent money on systems that work and enough staff but they don't so stuff like this happens.

DanceMumTaxi · 27/10/2024 13:58

This is the shops fault, you scanned an item and paid the price it came up as. They need to sort out the pricing issues. These are multinational companies. They need to sort out their technology.

MrsSunshine2b · 27/10/2024 13:58

The supermarket is saving whatever NMW is per hour on having customers do their own scanning, and apparently even more on competent tech people who organise the right bar code matching the right product. I wouldn't be even slightly worried about a £1 saving based on their error, and there's not a chance I'd be wasting my time chasing them around about it.

Isobel201 · 27/10/2024 13:57

MabelMora · 27/10/2024 13:05

But the machine is not serving you when there's a blip and you need a human to come and sort it out. That's the point OP is making. The staff should be attentive to the customers trying to catch their eye and the alert lights flashing above the tills, not standing around chatting.

OP - totally get your frustration. I've never been in a shop where you self scan on your phone. Which one was it?

It'll be Sainsburys, you use your phone with an app to scan the items.

Ithinkyou · 27/10/2024 13:57

I would have done the same. The fact is I probably wouldn't even have noticed, as long as the scan gun beeps I don't stop to check what it's gone through as and I don't check the screen at the end, I just pay and go.

Life's too short.

In answer to your question, yes you are a thief.

I shall turn myself in at the nearest police station forthwith.

Genuinely can’t believe some people are so worked up over a pound, I’m sure the supermarket will survive

Scannerscammer · 27/10/2024 13:56

FuzzyGoblin · 27/10/2024 13:51

I don’t even check what my scanner shows when I go to the supermarket. I just check that it does scan and put it in the trolley.

Presumably you are scanning and paying so it’s not up to you to check the supermarket has linked the bar code to the correct item but I wonder how often it happens and is financially detrimental to customers rather than the supermarket.

Exactly. I'm not on the supermarket's payroll, so why is it my job to check?

As I said, I suspect it is far more often to the customer's detriment.

I work in a supermarket and can just say - sometimes offers go out of date but the offer price is left on the shelf edge label (because they won't put on enough staff to get all the labels changed). If you scan something and its offer price doesn't register this is usually what's happened. If you take it to the till and show them what's happened they will be very grateful, sell it to you at the offer price shown - and then take the offending offer label off the shelf edge, tear it into little pieces while swearing quietly over the headset to anyone who will listen that we need more staffing.

Edited

I think this is what happened to me yesterday in dunelm with a duvet set 🫣 price check over headset and then said the label was there on the shelf but not meant to be anymore so they’d sell it to me just this once at that price. I dunno about anyone else but I always feel a pain though when they have to check prices

Presumably the w u liquid was cheaper?

It was washing liquid, but yes.

Someone who works in a supermarket explained why this situation occurs - it's usually an expired offer still sitting on the shelf edge.
But I suppose all-knowing conspiracy theories feel better than listening to some lowly shop worker.

It's also strange how I don't tend to stumble upon offers that won't go through. Must be the very diligent promo change workers in my supermarket who are doing their job very well!
And I must be very proficient with self-checkouts as the only items I tend to encounter an issue with are those that are too light to register on the scales.
Though I think I'm the odd one out - most people faff it all up and stand there looking surprised.

It's a bit difficult to listen to "some lowly shop worker" when it was you they were giving the explanation to, not me...

Anyway, many congratulations on your superlative self-checkout skills, Your Highness. I didn't think Fortnum's had self-checkouts.

@WillimNot Not Aldi, OP said "the orange one" so Sainsbo's, presumably.

I would have done the same as you OP, I've wasted too much time waiting for a poor staff member to come over and sort out the problems at self scanners 🙁

I can't get worked up about this. It's their fault, so their loss.

user1467300911 · 27/10/2024 13:48

I am always rushing around and likely would not have noticed. It’s the supermarket’s problem to resolve.

Miyagi99 · 27/10/2024 13:45

Couldn’t be arsed about this, if the system doesn’t work properly that’s not my problem, as long as there wasn’t too much of a price difference (and I mean over £5 which I doubt there would be between orange and washing up liquid!).

MrsSkylerWhite · 27/10/2024 13:40

I would have done the same and I’m usually very honest. But I ache too bloody much to keep sorting out a supermarket’s issues.
When you have a spare £1 put something in the food bank if that helps.

Good idea.

Aldi by any chance?
Our one is an utter joke.
The self check area is always packed because despite having 6 additional manned tills, they're never open and if they are there's only one open.
Last week I had a basket of 6 items. Every single one wasn't registering in the bag
The cow that man's the self check area is vile. I've twice had to speak to managers about her conduct, she was bloody vile to my autistic DS a few months back.
So she's come over 6 times. Then she starts tutting and grumbling at me telling me I'm obviously causing an issue. I asked how when clearly the scale that registers that items have been placed in the bag area was faulty.
So I went to pay contactless, but as I've done it, the till changed screen back to "unexpected item, please remove from bagging area". Nothing had touched it. So she comes over and starts searching the bag, I asked her why and she said "maybe you've stolen from us". I explained that I was trying to pay and the till was clearly faulty as a whole, and she should close it after me.
Tried to carry on, card declined. So she stands over me, says loudly "ugh all that and you can't even pay", literally spat at me with venom and to cause embarrassment.
I assured her I had more than enough funds so she tells me to do chips and pin, but the till just failed again and again said unexpected item.
I had no cash on me so called DH who had to leave our work and run round with money.
Checked my bank later, it had gone out twice. So I paid three times.

Reported it in store, heard that many people had issues with that member of staff but they couldn't get rid of her. No explanation as to why.
I'm still waiting for my money back so have had to apply to my bank for a chargeback.

It's a ball ache but the only store near me. So now I ask for a till to be opened because I refuse to use the self checkout as I loudly said last time the thing is openly defrauding customers and manned by an incompetent bully. She is so well known locally she gets brought up on Facebook all the time
