AIBU to think this displays a breathtaking lack of self-awareness from one of the richest men in the world?

Well, how about you make a start with that Charles?!

But the public can view Lambeth Palace, it is a tourist attraction.

It's the public ownership part I'm interested in.

I wasn't really planning on reducing the entire discussion to a single example given as an illustration.

I'm sure there are others that are happy to though.

Well it is important because these sites are invariably in wealthy areas and will only make way for homes for wealthy people. Your argument is flawed.

How much do you, honestly, think a house would go for on that site? Is that true equality?
E2A yes you can if you work in that sector and the mind and soul needs nourishing as much as the body.

I'd be in favour of public ownership and use as tourist attractions, or sensitive conversion into housing/businesses if unable to pay their way.

Don't actually need a few people of status living in them.

So we should destroy all our culture and historic buildings for the sake of a few overpriced houses?

Charles and his family sit at the very top of the inequality pyramid

They are the embodiment of inequality. No one here can become Monarch. We have to tell our sons and daughters that they can never - no matter what they do, who they are, what they desire - never become Monarch. They simply are not equal, good enough, or however you want to dress it up. And that is what all Royalists believe. That our children are not worthy of being Monarch.

Because it is insanely wealthy

Well most religions are wealthy at the very top.
And as much as I believe the RCC should free up some of their wealth, income comes via donations not through taxes (and through wealth management obviously).

You call it overpriced houses.

I call it equality 😀

E2A: You can't feed your family with culture.

But for there to be systemic change for the wellbeing of the population there would need to be seismic shift in the vast, and perpetually maintained, immense inequality in our society. Charles and his family sit at the very top of the inequality pyramid. Given this, why is he giving advice, of this kind, to people all the way at the bottom of this pyramid? He has no idea what’s like to be on the wrong side of inequality. He has no idea what it’s like to be poor, to make a decision between heating or eating, or to be forced to use loan sharks because he suddenly has no money for either. Given all of this, isn’t his message just just really insincere?

We don't live in a communist state (thankfully) I don't object to having "inequality" as such so long as everyone had equal opportunity to be able to choose to have a home, food, employment and good health.

In the U.K.? Because I seem to remember learning 8n history about how the crown took all that.
Not a catholic myself, incidentally. Just think there are other religious organisations also hoarding wealth.

Most religions do but the Catholic Church is especially bad for it.

I agree. If he just gave it all away, it would lead to short term benefit, or benefit for a small number of people, because of the way the system is.

He's calling for systematic change for the wellbeing of the population. This is part of his job description, after all...

Are the RF the ultimate in "benefit scroungers"? 🤔 😆

Well start by selling Lambeth Palace. Plenty of housing could be put up there.

I’d have a look at the Church of England and its direct involvement in chattel slavery. All the papers are viewable at Lambeth Palace.

@Elphame which advert?

There was a job advert for a full time domestic staff vacancy at Windsor Castle a few weeks ago. They put the advert up with a salary of £22K (below minimum wage for a 21yr old). It was reissued at £24K after this was reported. It's now a smidgeon above but only just.

Paintbyalphabet · 25/10/2024 10:30

Id do a small change and make sure every car park in the country was free. Moreso if it permits access to the countryside/coast.

Mischance · 25/10/2024 10:29

I do not think he is wise to "tackle inequality" - there is no way he can be taken seriously on this subject.

Craftymam · 25/10/2024 10:25

I think the man means teach them fishing as opposed give them a fish.

But I agree it is quite comical when you looked at it plainly.

Yup. The old saying holds true. "Give a man a fish and he'll eat that day, teach a man to fish and he'll eat for the rest of his life".

Honestly, it's hilarious that Charles has said this. Talk about people in glass houses shouldn't be throwing stones. It's really cheered me up though. Very funny.

For some reason I have a memory of a scene from Blackadder II, where Blackadder asks Baldrick about how popular he is ....
