A scotch egg should be considered a breakfast menu item

It's sausage and egg. How did it end up in the picnic category rather than the breakfast category?

After a long stressful day at work, this is where my mind is at. But I do think I'm right, it should be moved to the breakfast category with immediate effect. Perhaps even pushing avocados out to make room for it.

... but then I do like smoked mackerel pate, and that's cold. Hmmm.

What about the smoked haddock Scotch egg, then? Smoked haddock is also traditionally a breakfast food (for the aristocracy, anyway - those glorious Downton Abbey style breakfast spreads always include some sort of smoked fish). Never had a SHSE. Are they eaten hot or cold? I don't fancy the idea of cold fish, I must say, but this Tesco recipe says 'leave to cool before serving'. Hmm

I hate sweet breakfasts like cereal and fruit so this would be right up my street!

WorriedRelative · 25/10/2024 08:37

There is never a bad time to have a Scotch Egg. I bloody loved a scotch egg!

twentysevendresses · 25/10/2024 08:27

I'd happily eat a scotch egg at any time of day. For me it falls into the same category as trifle 😍 Everyone knows that trifle is great for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea...or in a portable container at a picnic 😍

The question is… is it a substantial meal?

That “scotch egg is a substantial meal’ was the only highlight of Covid for me. To have the government legislate that I should eat scotch egg when I went to the pub is the sort of law I can really get behind.

@quirkyquerty this is a very important question you’ve raised. Thank you. I think the unbreakfastyness of the SE is predicated on its temperature.

DilemmaDelilah · 25/10/2024 08:21

@choppolata can you cook/heat avocado? And surely, although you have eliminated the egg, there is still the 'scotch' bit which isn't vegan.

You could, I expect, make something similar with vegan sausage mix, but I'm not sure what you would fill it with.... It needs to be something fairly substantial that will hold its shape, but not something that needs a lot of cooking unless it can be cooked first.... Hmmm worth thinking about! Mushroom? Onion? Potato? A tomato perhaps! An interesting conundrum.

MrsMoastyToasty · 25/10/2024 08:20

So a Scottish breakfast would be egg wrapped in haggis, covered with tattie scones and deep fried then allowed to cool?....

Morning everyone, scotch eggs as the ready?

If I had one I would have it for breakfast, alongside an avocado!

The question is… is it a substantial meal?

I think it was finally declared to be one! Goodness, those were the days Grin

But why not? Sausage and eggs are accepted at breakfast as separate items, why not combined. Quite a good 'on the go breakfast, if portability is your concern. Scrap the cereal bars bring in the scotch eggs.

Make a scotch egg cereal bar!

I would happily eat a scotch egg for breakfast. In fact I have. I often say that if I could only eat one thing for the rest of my life, it would be that.

Another whoosh - I appreciate I maybe on my own here with my nod to the great scotch egg controversy of 2020.

Made me snigger, I got it 😷 . And the handmade ones in my local shop are very definately a substantial meal !

PersilPower · 24/10/2024 22:34

Breakfast? Wash your mouth out you charlatan!

StarSlinger · 24/10/2024 22:33

We sometimes have breakfast for dinner though.

SplendidUtterly · 24/10/2024 22:32

A black pudding scotch egg warmed up is definitely a breakfast item🤤

The question is… is it a substantial meal?

I actually find a scotch egg quite a filling breakfast! Compact but quite high in protein.

You are most definitely not on your own. I came here purely to post what my son (who's only 12!) and I routinely say to each other whenever scotch eggs are mentioned or bought (especially as part of a meal deal), "that's a full meal in itself."

I believe it was an effort by the pubs to ensure they could serve alcohol as part of serving 'substantial meals'.

cookiebee · 24/10/2024 22:24

I’ve eaten scotch eggs for breakfast, food categories and rules don’t exist in my mind. Food is fuel, eat whatever you want, whenever you want, it all does the same thing and ends up in the same place!

TiredGoingToBed · 24/10/2024 22:17

I feel that I might be making some at the weekend, this time I’m not bothering with the breadcrumbs, they can have roasted sausage crust instead.

Cheepcheepcheep · 24/10/2024 22:17

Well I was about to go to bed but now DH and I are having an argument about this. I’m team scotch egg breakfast, he’s not.

so there goes Friday I guess

Hollowvoice · 24/10/2024 22:17

IGotBigKidsAndICannotLie · 24/10/2024 21:33

I'm going to say, if you have it warm it's a breakfast food. If you have it cold, it's for picnic. The end.

<nods meaningfully>

Ooh, interesting. I'd never thought of it like that but I like it

BobbyBiscuits · 24/10/2024 22:16

But it's cold. Anything meat or egg related on a breakfast is meant to be hot. For me it's a snack.
I guess if you cut it into slices and fried or grilled it, then put in in a toastie? Then it could be a breakfast!

GordonRamsey · 24/10/2024 22:15

If it is in a bowl with milk and sugar on it, it is a breakfast item.

If it is rolling about on a plate whilst you are sat on a red gingham table cloth on some grass, then it is a picnic item.

These are the ONLY two possibilities - and I know a thing or two about food (ffs).
