If the UK is made to pay reparations where will that leave other nations who were or indeed still are involved in slavery?

I would watch the current series of David Olusoga's excellent A House Through Time to see how the humiliation and bankrupting of Germany after WW1 contributed to many young and educated Germans supporting the Nazi party. It is fascinating.

You have to have a very poor knowledge of history to not be aware of the role of WW1 reparations leading to WW2.

So are you saying that we'll be so mad about paying reparations we'll all immediately go out and try to get a slave each, or that we'll start WW3?

Ah the last recourse of a bully!

Calling someone else mentally ill.

I've reported you.

NewGreenDuck · 26/10/2024 13:26

As I said much earlier Germany paid reparations to Jewish people who had been directly affected by the Holocaust. That happened immediately after WW2. In much the same way as if any individual suffers an injury/loss and sues the individual or organisation that causes that injury.
And, yes, I do understand that the causes of any war are complex, probably because I do have some knowledge of history.

Danajune11 · 26/10/2024 13:26

My opinion is I think the UK should at least give a long and detailed apology for the hurt they've caused other countries.

Reparations are probably not likely as the UK can't be forced to give them. And will just refuse.

But a detailed apology would go a long way to soothing anger

The shame is surely that of our predecessors not the victims?

You're still benefiting from it today.

This is just ridiculous. I think the whole debate is full of bad actors.

Ginmonkeyagain · 26/10/2024 13:20

Indeed. Actual historians.

Objecting to a glib solution that will do more damage than good to the people demanding it is not the same as refusing to acknowledge the wrong done.

Danajune11 · 26/10/2024 13:20

NewGreenDuck · 26/10/2024 13:19

Many historians.

Historians actualtl say that a variety of things led to workd war two.

Right Let's look at a different instance of reparations then.

Germany have been paying reparations to Jewish people.

What's your thoughts on that

NewGreenDuck · 26/10/2024 13:19

Danajune11 · 26/10/2024 13:17

Who's 'many people?'

Do you mean the posters on here who want to use it as an example of why not to pay reparations.

Do you think that they're possibly a little biased?

Because they don't want to pay reparations

Edited

Many historians.

KnittedCardi · 26/10/2024 13:17

I can't find a definitive total value, but looking at various sources, the UK, since independence in 1965, has poured millions (billions?), into, for example, Jamaica. In general assistance, aid, technical, health, education, policing, climate, additionally recently debt relief.

To insist on further financial reparations, for a crime committed more than 200 years ago, is frankly absurd.

SpudleyLass · 26/10/2024 13:17

Ginmonkeyagain · 26/10/2024 13:10

Have people any idea how much 18 trillion pounds is? Our entire GDP is 2.2 trillon pounds.

Say we did pay the 18 trillion. We would be a wrecked, failed state, vulnerable to hyper inflation, crippling debt payments and worse.

There would be huge amounts of refugees fleeing the UK, a good minority of whom would have the right to return to some of the countries demanding repairations. The people that remained would be destitute and prey to extremist politics.

Would it really benefit the countries demanding this to have a UK that is broken and financially ruined beyond repair - oh and with nuclear weapons.

The Washington DC based paper ''The Hill'', have written articles on just this.

There are certain states cough China Cough Russia who benefit from the UK and the Commonwealth coming to blows or facing other division.

I'd say its probably the entire purpose tbh.

@Danajune11 you've been told already that many people view the post WW1 reparations demanded of Germany as a colossal political error with massive unintended consequences for world. So yes I think we (and the French and USA) were wrong in that.

All the posters on here talking about themselves, "why should I have to pay this" etc.

But do any of you have any empathy for what other countries went through? There was a huge amount of suffering and genocide and cruelty

Will Armenia receive any reparations?

How about Serbia? Will Ukraine be compensated for the thousands of women sold into slavery?

NewGreenDuck · 26/10/2024 13:16

I did not say it was OK. I actually pointed out that many believe that the reparations paid after WW1 might have been a cause of WW2. I'm trying to be factual. Stating a fact, as a fact, is just that.

The Germans paid 90 billion to jews so far - dollars. Since 1950s.

A further 1.5 billion this year.

Germany has been excellent at trying to right a wrong.

Not us though.

Thats a good point. Germany have at least been trying to make amends.

The UK hasn't done anything

Go back and read my original sentence. The whole sentence, without missing any words.

SpudleyLass · 26/10/2024 13:14
  1. Germany could afford it.
  2. It came directly from those who perpetrated and given to the country to the benefit of those who suffered.

Yeah I'd say its different.

Ì think we need to be more concerned about modern slavery in any case, but really if the government paid reparations it would be the entire population paying ( again) for something a tiny proportion of people benefitted from. People who are British descendents of slaves, descendents of the British Empire, people who were exploited by the very same people in the UK ( slate miners in Wales, cotton mill workers etc) would be the ones payingvthrough their taxes. The people who should be paying reparations are the families of slave owners who were paid millions upon millions in 'compensation' that allowed them to buy huge swathes of land, stately homes/factories etc in Britain where they continued to exploit people. They are easily identifiable because for most of them, their descendents are still benefitting from that compensation money.

I didn't misquote you. I typed out word for word what you said.

You wrote "people demanding reparations are chancers".

So I didn't misquote you. (By the way, while youre looking at spelling and grammar typos -there's always one! There should not be a space between mis and quote)

Edited

Still mis quoting me.
