If the UK is made to pay reparations where will that leave other nations who were or indeed still are involved in slavery?

What would the reparations be for?

In recent-ish examples where reparations (not compensation) were paid, it was for something direct and tangible, like Jewish holocaust survivors and displaced people being repaid for loss of earnings, loss of property, loss of education... It's not that the German state now makes reparations to British descendants of Jewish refugees living in the UK on the basis that they might have a nicer life if Nazism had never happened and they had been born and brought up in Germany.

I don't see how anyone living in Barbados or anywhere can objectively say, "my life would be better if I'd been born in Ghana because my descendants hadn't been sold into slavery 200 years ago".

The commonwealth leaders are also seeking an applogy

NewGreenDuck · 26/10/2024 19:09

The slave trade to Arabia etc was different in that the owners did not want to breed the slaves. Men were castrated to be guards, sometimes of the seraglio, or they worked as administrators dealing with financial matters etc. Sometimes they were soldiers. They weren't supposed to provide future slaves as more would be bought if required. The nature of the slavery and the work done was different.
Female slaves were always sexually abused wherever they were.

Do we need to help them though? Danajune11 the pious is surely already in a leading role, demanding those governments pay reparations and all the wrongs of their slavery ways are righted ..

... right?

I'd rather be pious than a bully.

Try to grow and evolve @unrulyrabbit.

You insulted several people on here

Multiple news reports have said that the Commonwealth leaders also want an apology.

I wonder will Keir Starmer give one

SidhuVicious · 26/10/2024 19:03

There is something like 4x more slaves in the world today than were trafficked over the whole 400 years of the transatlantic slave trade. I'd rather we focus on helping them tbh rather than those that are long dead.

The top 10 countries currently involved in slavery are as follows. None are 'western' (unless you include Russia) and 9/10 are majority non-white. The whole Jim Crow stereotype is now extremely out of date.

  1. North Korea
  2. Eritrea
  3. Mauritania
  4. Saudi Arabia
  5. Türkiye
  6. Tajikistan
  7. United Arab Emirates
  8. Russia
  9. Afghanistan
  10. Kuwait

Because they are greedy tow rags who think they can make a quick buck.

What about when the UK stole land from other people.

We're they greedy toe rags?

Hunglikeapolevaulter · 26/10/2024 19:06

Why don't you look up why the Commonwealth leaders are seeking reparations, for a start.

I read the area of Africa which is now mostly Zambia was decimated by the Arab slave trade - taking Africans as slaves via East Africa to Arabia and Gulf. The men were mostly castrated so there are fewer descendants in those countries today.

This included India. There are small Black-descended enclaves in ports but I always wondered why there were so few descendants. This makes more sense now.

@Danajune11

Why not? Because you don't like it?

Because you haven't answered the question.

I want to know what you think we should cut.

If you don't have an answer, don't know what you think, don't care, don't want to tell us - that's fine.

But 'the government will decide' is answer to a different question. Not the one I asked.

Our government have apologised, nearly 20 years ago

Actually Tony Blair was asked why he didn't apologise, and he responded with "well we are sorry". That was it. Four words

No one thinks that was much of an apology.

An apology would be a UK leader reading off a long statement of apology.

So again I'm asking you. Why are the commonwealth leaders seeking reparations from the UK?
Give me some examples. Do you know?

You go first. Answer my questions and I'll reciprocate. Or should I also just tell you google seeing as that's what you told me?

I was showing how petty and ridiculous your question is. Because of course we can Google everything.

So I won't be providing any information that you can easily look up yourself.

You asked what damage the UK have done to other countries.

Why don't you look up why the Commonwealth leaders are seeking reparations, for a start.

Flopsythebunny · 26/10/2024 19:01

Danajune11 · 26/10/2024 12:36

No one is saying the ordinary people should apologise though are they.

They are saying that the government should apologise for past wrongdoings. They haven't apologised for one single thing.

And a lot of the world is worse off to this day, because of what the UK did to them

Five examples will do.

Oh is it five now? I thought you said two or three.

I talked to two different posters if you go back and read.

@Danajune11

Already answered twice. I won't answer the same question more than twice.

'The government will decide' isn't an answer.

Why not? Because you don't like it?

You can't insist on someone changing their answer just because you don't like it. Jesus. The people on here are unreal

I dont take demands from people. I told you to Google it yourself. You're an adult. You're well able to do it

You don't know, do you? You've picked up on some general fashionable sentiment but you're completely lacking in the actual historical knowledge to provide a coherent argument.

@Danajune11 I'm still waiting for you to give me a bit more detail about the specific harms that individual countries have suffered, and how those harms impact on their current living residents. Two or three examples should do.

Answer me this, why are the commonwealth leaders seeking reparations from the UK?

Two or three examples will suffice. Thanks.
