We hear only negative things about parenting (and most subjects) a lot of the time. People will understandably seek advice for the moments where things are going wrong.
I wanted to start a thread to ask what your positive stories are regarding your kids?

I'll go first.
I have young sons and was in a shopping centre with them recently. I commented that I used to come here with my dm to go shopping, have coffee and cake. My 7 year old said:

"Mum when I am a grown up I will drive, come pick you up and bring you here and we will eat together and chat. I will buy you a meal out of my own money. "
This melted my heart. Ds is ND, he can tolerate shops, cafes when they're quiet, but isn't a fan, and for him to say this is huge.

What have yours said/done that have completely blown you away?

I was WFH yesterday and dc24 came in around lunch time and handed me a McDonalds.

Dc19 just before he went back to uni, sorted out the mess in my hallway of cardboard that needed to be broken down for recycling without being asked.

I love my dc 🥰

I was talking to my kids about a children's charity that I donated to in the developing world and my son got so upset about it that he ran to get his wallet and asked me to send them all his money.

I also found out recently that my autistic teen keeps a Gifts Log on her phone for family and friends because she struggles so much with knowing what to buy but also wants to buy them something so has got quite stressed about it before, so anytime anyone mentions liking something or wished they had something she notes it down ready for birthdays / Christmases / just because. Which I thought was a great idea - she is nothing if not logical and if there is a problem she'll work out a solution.

I was sat watching tv the other day and ds (10) came and kissed me on the cheek and cuddled me. I realised it's a while since I've had kisses with a purpose (bedtime etc...) it was just out of no where and because he wanted to.
Melted me heart.

My ds said to me once 'mum I can't wait to come and bring my kids back here for a sleepover' ah that's nice it'll be great! I'll make popcorn for the kids we can play together etc' says I

he says 'what about me mum im
coming too!!!'

Teen DD for my birthday booked cinema tickets for us and then produced a tenner from her purse for me to treat myself to refreshments.

She is autistic and struggles with shops and gift giving but knows that I love spending time with her and there was a film we both wanted to see. It was lovely the organisation being on the other foot - and £10 was exactly enough for a drink and popcorn each.

My mother sadly. Its ok she has lost so much by being who she is. I have an amazing family and she can never be a part of that and I think for half an hour per week I can put up with it ,she never crosses my mind the rest of the time!!

Extremely limited due to a certain sense of duty I have. I will shop for her, pay her bills etc but thats about it! I honestly didnt think her actions had been noted by anyone else let alone a young kid!

your mother or your mil?

i wouldn’t want any one in the vicinity of my children who behaved like this and so disturbed by it were they…. they felt the need to stick up for their mother

Theres some amazing kids (and parents) on this thread.x

Edited

tell me you don’t have anything further to do with your narc mother and certainly your son doesn’t?

When he was 10, my son said 'After I have taken my kids swimming on Sat mornings, I will pick you up and we will all go for breakfast'. 😍

Smart boy, thinking ahead! 🥰

Such a cute thread

DS started getting £1 a week pocket money when he was in year 1. I took him out to buy a little toy and he saw he had enough for two - didn't think anything of it until I saw he'd told his little sister to pick one out too and had bought one for her as well 🥲

This made me cry

I lost my mum when my daughter was 4w old, and seeing mums, daughters and grand babies out having coffee on mat leave made my soul crumble.

What a beautiful little boy you have xxx

Aww thank you so much, he has a heart of gold. My youngest one is very affection, but my older one is more deep with his feelings. When he says something like that, you know he really means it.
It took me off guard that day, and looked me in the eyes and said it with such seriousness, I nearly cried in the middle of the shopping centre!! I always thought having sons that aren't into that sort of thing, I wouldn't get that experience again. It looks like I was wrong!

I am so sorry about your Mum 💐I can't imagine how extra tough that was, with your daughter being a tiny baby. 💜Hopefully, one day you can do these things with her, in your Mum's honour. They live on in the things we do, all of the little reminders, and memories! I still talk like mine is alive; it helps somehow; they are still with us.

How lovely OP. Bless him.

The thing that jumps to my mind is when my mum died. She died during covid and we had a small amount of people at her funeral as a result due to the rules on social distancing at the time.

In the crematorium we all had to sit spaced apart. I was on the end as I had to get up to deliver the eulogy and my 15 year old daughter was on the chair next to my Dad. As I delivered the eulogy my Dad started to cry uncontrollably and my daughter reached out her hand to her Grandad and took it in hers and held it while he broke down. I remember being so proud of her that she had the compassion, through her own terrible grief, to do that for her Grandad. He still speaks of it today and how much, in that moment, he needed someone and she was there for him.

Oh this broke my heart. What a sweet girl. That’s a lot for a teenager to do isn’t it. Lots of love to you all xxx
