The Yorkshire Ripper question?

Just read that it cost the taxpayer 11 billion to keep him alive including his funeral?
Do you still feel the same way about him being hung for his murders?

is it acceptable to the taxpayer to pay that much, when there are so many other things that the money could have been spent on, or dosent the money matter?

I heard it was eleventy billion

That number is bigly

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/10/2024 14:47

You made a whopping mistake, only grudgingly acknowledged it, said it wasn't really your mistake. Irony, thy name is OP.

Mistakes happen OP, maybe let's not make them fatal at the hands of the State.

MorrisZapp · 22/10/2024 13:46

Daily Mail reported it as ten million. He was in prison for 32 years so it costs what it costs. What's the alternative?

Exactly. If he had been free more women would have died.

Only it is because the OP is just as likely as any of us to appear on a jury.

There does seem to be a spate of AIBUs recently of the 'I've read something preposterous on the internet but because I have no critical thinking skills whatsoever I've not let stopping to think whether or not it's actually true get in the way of the chance to have a good froth on AIBU' variety.

Yep. I half wonder if they are deliberate rage-bait tbh, as so much of what's posted on social media these days is fake. This OP is a case in point - could quite easily be pure rage-bait.

I have answered I said I could not care less if he had been hung ok.

It's hanged, not hung.

Do you have any idea how much it costs to execute someone?
It can take years and the legal process has to be exhaustive so I'm not sure it's the economy drive you're hoping for.
It's not a case of verdict on Thursday executed on Friday.
But I'm not sure critical thinking or analysis of all the implications (and that's before you get onto the possibility of miscarriages of justice) are quite within the OPs skill set

only in some places (eg USA) in others they go literally from the court to the hangman/firing squad. Or it takes a few days.

Lifeomars · 22/10/2024 14:43

I think it is better to call him by his real name, Peter Sutcliff rather than the tabloid nickname which in my opinion plays into the mythologising of these murderous misogynists. Jack the Ripper (I appreciate he was never apprehended), The Yorkshire Ripper,The Suffolk Strangler, all men who slaughtered women and it is the names of their victims we should remember not the terrible men who ended so many lives in such appalling ways.

TarantinoIsAMisogynist · 22/10/2024 14:43

viques · 22/10/2024 14:42

Eleventy billion and 97p to be exact.

😂😂

PassingStranger · 22/10/2024 14:02

Of course they are, how patronising. Still wouldnt care if he had been hung. I wont be the only one to think that either. There was absolutely no doubt of his crimes.

There was absolutely no doubt of his crimes.

The same was thought about the Birmingham Six, Guildford Four etc.

Sutcliffe is obviously guilty, but the death penalty wouldn't just be applied to selected cases where we're sure - it would apply to anyone convicted of a suitably serious crime by a jury. But we all know that juries can, and do, get it wrong.

downwindofyou · 22/10/2024 14:43

It was not 11 billion ffs

Brefugee · 22/10/2024 14:41

*hanged

and no it doesn't change my mind at all. I do not believe in the death penalty.

MorrisZapp · 22/10/2024 14:41

KrisAkabusi · 22/10/2024 14:27

Oh good. You accept that people make mistakes. You must therefore accept that if the death penalty is brought back, that innocent people will be murdered by the state. But that's OK, just focus on the times they didn't make a mistake!

Chefs kiss x

Waterboatlass · 22/10/2024 14:40

The police were racist as well as misogynistic which led to wasted time and dismissal of a reliable witness. Look at their treatment of Marcella Claxton.

Economic saving is no reason to call for a return for the death penalty. Imagine if it had been handed down to Angela Cannings or Sally Clark because there wasn't the awareness of cot death?

BlastedPimples · 22/10/2024 14:40

That is what prison costs.

Execution could also cost a lot with constant appeals.

PassingStranger · 22/10/2024 14:40

TarantinoIsAMisogynist · 22/10/2024 14:28

What on earth are you talking about? We do still have whole-life terms for murder.

They have always been used only for the most serious cases, but these days they appear to be given out more frequently that they used to be (by judges rather than ministers).

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_prisoners_with_whole_life_orders

Have you ever considered sense checking a 'fact' before repeating it?

The most serious cases! Isnt all murder serious then?

its been dumbed down since the dealth penalty was abolished.

The death penalty question is a moral one not a practical money-based one however wrong your figures are/ reading ability is.

If you value human life at all you don't kill others at all, no matter what they have done. The machine of State exists to be rational so it should not kill either.

Yes, I would probably want to kill someone who had killed my child and I might do it if I were able, but I would not expect to go unpunished.

TarantinoIsAMisogynist · 22/10/2024 14:39

MorrisZapp · 22/10/2024 13:55

The utterly botched, viciously misogynist investigation which led to him being free to murder more victims is the real public scandal, and that's the cause we need to keep attention on.

I agree. And misogyny is still an issue in the police force today, which has a material impact on women's access to justice.

YABU for referring to him as The Yorkshire Ripper. The families of his victims have asked that this not be used as “it serves to retraumatise us families left behind because it’s a description of how our loved ones, how they were maimed, how their injuries were inflicted.”

His name was Peter Sutcliffe.

Thank you, good point.

Jeansontoast · 22/10/2024 14:26

I think the fact their is such violence in society. Pedophilia, rapes and murders. This shows that society is far from civilised. As much as we like to think of ourselves that way

But that is the point isnt it? It isn't a race to the bottom

Yes, it was your mistake. 11bn is such a huge sum that it was blindingly obvious that it was wrong. If you chose not to engage your brain, that's your fault.

If something sounds implausible, then I think you have a responsibility to re-read it to double check before posting a load of shite on a public forum.

There will be plenty of people who only read the OP and take what it says as gospel, who will now go and repeat that bullshit to other people they know. That's one of the ways disinformation gets spread - by people not engaging their brain.

😂

It's quite clear that I was meaning if another country "wanted" them, hence my comment about it being worth paying a few million per person to the other country to take them. I wasn't considering forcing another country to take them against that country's will - after all, they simply wouldn't allow admittance at their border control.

Why would another country want a convicted serial killer?

PassingStranger · 22/10/2024 14:36

CaveMum · 22/10/2024 14:32

Don’t call him “The Yorkshire Ripper”, that’s a press given nickname that affords him the notoriety his kind crave. Refer to him as PS if you have to, but he deserves no such recognition of a “celebrity” name.

I highly recommend listening to the Crime Analyst podcast which did an excellent deep dive into the case and the misogyny and incompetence shown by the police, whilst also being sympathetic and respectful to the victims.

Did you know his name was actually Peter Coonan in the end. He changed it. No doubt to distance himself from his crimes.
