Is this revenge on the OW fair or not?

Obviously we don't have the whole story, but would you be tempted to do this, to take revenge on the OW on your mother's behalf? I think I might, if I felt my mother and my family had been torn apart by her actions.

A mugshot of Eleanor Brown - a woman in her early twenties with dark shoulder length hair and blue eyes.

Eleanor Brown jailed for sharing naked photos of father's lover

Eleanor Brown posted the woman's photos on an escort site as an "act of revenge", a court hears.

Very odd definition of “fair” to publically shame a female body like that. It suggests that the woman’s crime is her sexuality and that the just punishment should be public humiliation of her naked female body. It’s a medieval approach.

The failure of an affair is a moral one: cheating, lying and hurting those you love. “Fair” as retribution should be the breakdown of relationships with love ones, division of the life and assets you have built up together, disruption to your life and family the way you have upended the life of an innocent party. Possibly ostracisation from the social community.

I suppose ultimately to experience the same pain you have caused others would be the ultimate “fair” in this scenario.

The CPS guidance is a 6 month term for sharing nude photos without consent. I can't find a record of any man being jailed for 3 years for a similar offence, and think how many men share photos without consent. She is being treated harshly because she is a woman.

She's being treated harshly for the sheer maliciousness that went into her actions. Her mother should have also received a sentence for projecting her anger into her daughter.

And, the father just walks away with no blame attached. Absolutely fucking terrific.

MorrisZapp · 22/10/2024 09:00

Of course it isn't fair, it's a criminal offence. What a ridiculous question.

I agree, sentencing is disproportionate for women. My sister worked in a female prison for a while and she said many of the prisoners really should not have been in there. The crimes were relatively petty and the impact on their (often young) children was huge. This women behaved badly but I would have thought a non custodial sentence would have been more appropriate, given her age, first offence, trauma as a teen etc.

I disagree- she has no children so your argument about that does not apply. At every point in the trial she was unrepentant and difficult. There were many aspects to this case and she fully deserves the sentence. Your making of excuses to minimise her choices over a period of time (many years after the affair) behaviours, the extent and impact of it and her complete lack of remorse is awful- she is an adult who made choices because she wanted to do those things to hurt, humiliate, scare, punish the woman and her family, destroy her marriage and her husband's business.
She didn't have awful teenage years- the claim was they have been taken from her since her discovery of the affair - she was a very late teenager when she discovered it . She had many opportunities to stop her behaviour and she revelled in it. Her sister was as bad but did all the encouraging and stepped back and watched.
There is no reason why she should not serve a prison sentence. Women should not be treated more lightly if they offend.

Hoplolly · 22/10/2024 09:00

It's not about the affair , it lies squarely with the girl and her sharing photos of someone else without their permission from something that actually happened years ago, and these photos were pushed into the realm of her marriage, her employment and her community in a targeted effort to harass

Agree @MrMucker The daughter also targeted the husband of the OW and tried to harm his business. And why? What for? What the fuck had he done to deserve any of it.

AGoingConcern · 22/10/2024 08:59

People wonder why sex crimes are so hard to prosecute.

Here’s a thread full of women looking at the victim of a sex crime and a good chunk are saying “well she probably deserved it for it for being the wrong kind of slut a decade before.”

She was asking for it.
Well I bet she learned not to go sleeping around anymore.
It wouldn’t have happened it’s she was more respectable.

Absolutely despicable.

SanctuaryCity · 22/10/2024 08:58

Glad she’s being punished although the main culprit is the mum. What a vile woman to encourage your daughters to break the law/ lose their job. The dad was an idiot for having an affair and not just leaving her and then staying married to such a poisonous woman. The mum has chosen to stay married to him whilst getting her own children to seek vengeance on her behalf. What a fucked up family.

Resitinas · 22/10/2024 08:58

Tink3rbell30 · 22/10/2024 08:36

Revenge is fair game, actions have consequences and she should get what she deserves. Got to be better than that though as that one obviously backfired.

People like you are genuinely terrifying. Revenge isn't fair game. You make it sound as if what this woman did would have been ok if she hasn't been caught. Fucking awful.

VictoriaSpungecake · 22/10/2024 08:57

Fair or unfair? It was illegal and justice has been served.

MrMucker · 22/10/2024 08:57

It's not about the affair , it lies squarely with the girl and her sharing photos of someone else without their permission from something that actually happened years ago, and these photos were pushed into the realm of her marriage, her employment and her community in a targeted effort to harass They were nude intimate photos from what she believed to be a private scenario, and she is now unable to go anywhere in her normal life without knowing who has seen them.

The sentence is fair. And it's a strong important message to others, might make a few people rethink their responses. That's the other point of the sentencing.

MiraculousLadybug · 22/10/2024 08:54

I think they should have prosecuted the mother for raising her children to think this level of dramatic behaviour is acceptable, and for encouraging her daughter to do this, and for turning the children against the OW to such an extent. She clearly gave them information about this affair far beyond what children ever should have known.
I think it's unfair to prosecute the daughter to this extent when she was basically groomed into doing this and the person who wound her up and pointed her in the right direction gets to go home scot free. I think what she did is awful, though.

PaterPower · 22/10/2024 08:54

She got three years because she was convicted on two charges, so got a year for one and two for the other. The judge’s sentencing remarks indicate why he was ‘harsh’ with the length - she forced the victim to give evidence and showed no remorse for her actions.

I really think the sister and mother should have faced charges too. It’s pretty clear that the mother sent her the photos to use on the escort site and knew and encouraged what she was doing.

And the sister?! What a fucking coward (amongst other unpleasant aspects to her personality). Presumably SHE didn’t post the pictures up because she knew how illegal it was and knew there’d be a threat to her job.

She must have come into contact with victims of sexually abusive crimes at some point in her police work, and would certainly have had training on the impact etc, but chose to egg her sister on. She’s no loss to policing, but the CPS should have had her up in court with her sister. Arguably, SHE should have faced the heavier sanctions, because of all of the above.

NoisyDenimShaker · 22/10/2024 08:54

The daughter clearly has anger management issues. She'd have been better off learning how to deal with her anger than doing what she did. I think the fact that the affair was still eating her up TWELVE YEARS after the fact, when her parents are still together even, speaks of mental-health issues.

Also, perhaps she's not very bright, not realising that it takes two.

I'm at a loss to know why she could be this upset twelve years after the fact. She did know about the affair at the time, because she said how much it had damaged her teenage years. You'd have thought she'd have moved on twelve years later.

I think she's just bonkers.

Pleasant, caring, generous women don’t spend two years fucking someone else’s husband.

This is simply bullshit.

Yes. It happens. Being the OW does not negate every other aspect of someone's character. Nobody belongs to someone else. I'm not condoning being the OW. But this ridiculous notion by bitter women on Mumsnet that having been the OW automatically makes someone a terrible person who doesn't deserve friends or happiness of any kind and should be outcast by other women forever and ever amen is just tiresome now.

Hoplolly · 22/10/2024 08:53

AngeloMysterioso · 22/10/2024 08:51

Pleasant, caring, generous women don’t spend two years fucking someone else’s husband.

In your opinion.

But....they sometimes do.

Having an affair doesn't change someone's entire personality. It's one element.

AngeloMysterioso · 22/10/2024 08:51

Alltheunreadbooks · 22/10/2024 08:09

That scenario could have been written about my parents split.

A two year affair leading to the break up of my parents 25yr marriage and OW's 15 Yr marriage.

Yes my mum was devasted, betrayed, humiliated and still seethe about it 20 odd years later.

My father and now step mum are, however, perfect together. She is a pleasant, caring , generous woman.

My father apparently was not happy for a long time before the affair and looking back I can see that. My mother is in complete denial and insists they would still be blissfully married if it wasn't for OW, and it's that kind of refusal to see the truth that probably was the problem all along.

Affairs are indeed not always all about shagging and thrill seeking. When you are in an unhappy relationship and feel trapped and powerless, it's easy to see how they start.

These women taking revenge are obviously nasty pieces of work and not very bright. I hope the mum is ashamed now.

Pleasant, caring, generous women don’t spend two years fucking someone else’s husband.

Resitinas · 22/10/2024 08:50

Not RTFT but FFS. I'm sorry, OP, but there is something actively wrong with you if you think this woman's actions (the daughter, to be clear) are in any way ok. I actually can't believe you have posted in support of this - and I say this as the child of divorced parents due to an affair. I get fucking sick of the vilification of women in this position on this forum. It isn't ok to be the OW. I would never claim it's an ok course of action. But it happens. It causes hurt and it causes pain, and is to be avoided. I'm not condoning it. But it isn't the worst fucking transgression in the world. People who end up being the OW are not witches to be hung out in the stocks like we are in the Middle Ages fgs. The daughter had every right to feel upset. She had every right to feel angry but the anger needs to be directed towards her father and no matter what she feels anyone has done, her response is disproportionate, twisted and I'd go as far as evil. She is now FAR more worthy of derision than the OW in question.

DustyAmuseAlien · 22/10/2024 08:49

Very unreasonable.
The instigator and appropriate focus of anger is the married father who didn't take his responsibilities as husband and father serioisly. The OW was just a single womam who met a man who was (probably, I haven't read the details) pretending to be (a) nice and (b) unattached.

Even if she did hold some of the blame, posting nude photos online is a horrible thing to do to anyone. It's quite right she has been imprisoned.

Superhansrantowindsor · 22/10/2024 08:48

Greenfinch7 · 22/10/2024 03:48

@DifficultBloodyWoman I haven't read it all very carefully, but I can say from experience that the damage done to a girl or young woman by her father having an affair can be very profound and very painful. It is natural for her to hate the OW because it is too hard to hate a parent.

agree completely. You have summed it up very well.

HeadNorth · 22/10/2024 08:46

The ow said, ""I find it hard to believe a woman would do this to another woman."
Pot, meet kettle.

Hoplolly · 22/10/2024 08:45

I read all about the trial and the daughter comes across as very emotionally and mentally immature. A good spell in prison is probably what she needs to grow up a bit. The mother and sister are also culpable here, not one brain cell between the three of them.

BlastedPimples · 22/10/2024 08:43

The ow said, ""I find it hard to believe a woman would do this to another woman. To say I feel violated is an understatement."

All of them sound like foul people especially the father who skanked around on his wife.

Superhansrantowindsor · 22/10/2024 08:43

Totally wrong but totally understand feelings of anger and disgust at OW. I would blame the man equally for treating my mother so badly.

LuluBlakey1 · 22/10/2024 08:43

I read about this during the trial. Both of these daughters sounded awful people- no remorse, nasty, arrogant, vindictive- there was much more to it than the photos.

I am glad she has been sentenced to prison. She deserves it. We should be taking internet crime more seriously. It is like a personal weapon used indiscriminately to bully, hurt, exploit, scare, abuse, intimidate and make other people unhappy at the moment with very little consequence for most who do it.

I don't buy the usual defence of 'difficult teenage years'. The parents must be so proud to have raised two horrible, unkind, criminal daughters like this- I dread to think how these two will raise their own children when they have them- God forbid!

TheBoldHelper · 22/10/2024 08:41

She pleaded not guilty at first and only changed her plea after the trial had started. I would guess that she was given no credit for that

the opposite, she changed her plea after the woman testified, so she waited so she could humiliate her. The judge did not take it well.
