Martin Blake police officer today cleared by a jury of unlawful killing of Chris Kaba

Should police officers get more support. Perhaps not release name until after trial or inquiry.

I see the BBC refers to the fact he was shortly to become a father, but fails to mention a previous pregnancy that ended because he kicked his girlfriend of the time down the stairs. Both these details were irrelevant to the trial, of course.

Seriously?

What a fucking prince.

Wow. Not a great role model for a dad. Of course the papers, defence etc will try to paint him as a sweet, law abiding loving dad to be 😂

In reality an ex con, thug who was named in a shooting a few days before and this delightful episode with a previous pregnancy

SK often posts before facts are known, he posts things he know will create divide- I don't know how in his position it's permitted. I get that he has communities he wants to advocate for and give a voice to, but he's supposed to represent all of London and the public sector workers within it too.

And sadiq khan needs to be sacked. No surprise with his press release but wtf….

I agree. The man is a stain on London and is utterly lacking in integrity.

This week launches a toolkit to reduce violence against women and girls and on the same breath is an apologist for this scumbag.

I think its right that the situation will be further investigated. I have sympathy for the officer having to make a difficult split-second decision but it wasn't without risk and potential disastrous consequences. Surely if you shoot at someone driving a car at speed then there's a risk that the driver will lose control of the car while it's still moving at speed and plough into your colleagues or members of the public? What if he'd missed and the bullet went through the car and hit another officer or bystander?

This is absolutely nonsensical. Of course there is risk any time a firearm is deployed. It's the officers job to weigh up that risk. That is their expertise. That is the risk they are train to assess and mitigate as appropriate. Consider this. If that man was positioned with his car, several tones of metal which was involved in a shooting the evening before, directly in front of your child or loved one, using it as a battering ram and refusing to comply with instructions, what would you want the officer to do? For me, it would be to do whatever was possible to reduce the risk. All other options a had failed. So a bullet in the head to stop him wouldn't cause me to lose a minutes sleep.

Also this is what can happen
Just a trailing loop that he stepped in and he was killed trying to stop criminals

So sad

A young police officer killed because criminals would do anything to escape capture. The animals laughed after leaving a previous court hearing.

The bloody government needs investigating to ensure police are protected from doing their jobs. Like the army, they should not be named for doing their jobs.

NewGreenDuck · 22/10/2024 06:20

Just to add, according to reports this was the first time in all of the time he has been a firearms officer, that this officer has discharged a firearm. So he's probably attended umpteen incidents, has brought his firearm out and never discharged it before. The incidents before have, presumably, been brought to an end by compliance on the part of the subject. On this occasion Kaba decided not to comply.

Great news. Hopefully the officer can now move on and put this behind him.

I've got little sympathy for CK. The bloke was a violent thug with a history of gun offences, was driving a car involved in a firearms incident and failed to stop and surrender.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

That ^^
If he had stopped the car and switched off the engine he wouldn't have been shot
If it had been me, my parents would have said "well WTF do you expect?"

never ceases to amaze me how we can all watch the same video evidence and yet come to different conclusions. In my mind - and that of the jury - it is clearly the correct decision to acquit the defendant. And yet some people who watched the exact same clip believe the officer should have been found guilty.

It's a strange old world.

It's not strange. The difference is, 'we' have seen some news clips of the evidence.

The jury have been subject to all evidence and testimony, plus legal instructions from the judge on how to reach a conclusion from that information.

The fact that they only took three hours in a case like this is a massive indicator of how convincing the evidence was.

Ramblomatic · 22/10/2024 01:14

PlanetCats · 22/10/2024 01:00

Is the Rolex in the video/ dashcam footage?

No 😅

The 'evidence' passed around online is a posed pic of him wearing a submariner, no indication of when/where it was taken/if it was real etc.

There's an interesting discussion to be had here about Kaba's family.

They've lost their son which is - regardless of his life choices - objectively awful.

Their son has also been shot (albeit legally and justly) by a police officer from a force that has been found to be institutionally racist.

They have also pushed an unfounded conspiracy theory that he was wearing an expensive Rolex watch when he was shot, which has subsequently disappeared, the insinuation being that it was stolen by police or NHS staff (zero evidence for either).

Are they being unreasonable?

colouringindoors · 22/10/2024 00:47

He wasn't aggressive?! Have you seen the footage?

He should have stopped.

I agree he should have stopped. I don't agree that he should have been shot in the head. I've written quite a bit about it in this thread for reasons why.

colouringindoors · 22/10/2024 00:47

username35890 · 21/10/2024 22:05

This is like Jackanory and people are just making stuff up.

No one attacked the police, he didn't drive at any police officers or hit any police officers. He wasn't aggressive and didn't say anything.

Who he is is important when people are saying that he had previous convictions. The police didn't know who he was ergo they wouldn't have known of any previous convictions.

The alleged incident was a few days earlier re the firearms.

We don't have the same faith in the police given the footage.

He wasn't aggressive?! Have you seen the footage?

He should have stopped.

Why didn't he stop when asked? Why did he drove so aggressively?

I think you have to recognise the fear the officers would have had. I doubt anyone can prepare for that scenario. The noise of the car crashing and revving would have suggested his intention was to escaping at any cost, including harming the officers. Had he driven off, innocent people in addition to the police could have been injured. I think that's a reasonable assessment from the video evidence of aggressive driving.

Exactly.

Correct decision today.

Thanks for the tip. I’ve followed it carefully enough to see that you’re not particularly bothered about the facts of the case in question so I’ll wade in wherever the fancy takes me.

Like I said, an egg mayo sandwich.

Enjoy your sandwich.
