Should police officers get more support. Perhaps not release name until after trial or inquiry.

What rehabilitation?

Chances are he would have been the one in the dock if he hadn’t been shot.

Edited

Isn’t the whole point of prison so that the offender can be rehabilitated? Bringing up someone’s past convictions as a ‘gotcha’ moment after they’ve served time for their crime is bizarre

Puzzledandpissedoff · 22/10/2024 18:44

He did his time ...

... and sadly appears to have gone right on offending, so as with so many whatever rehabilitation he received clearly didn't work (and probably never would have done, if gang membership and the proceeds of crime meant more to him than living decently)

The car had been linked to a shooting the previous night, therefore it’s reasonable to assume the occupant (who was failing to stop) was potentially carrying a firearm and was prepared to use it. It’s really not like they had “no clue” and just decided to pull over a random car, with no reason to believe the occupant may be armed 🙄.

If you’re going to get involved in a conversation when I’ve quote tweeted another poster, maybe try not to be obtuse? Where did I say any of that? I was responding to a previous poster who said, ‘it was that he was a criminal who had been involved in numerous gun offences.’ None of that was known at the time

LoudSnoringDog · 22/10/2024 18:44

It's unbelievable that this even made it to court.

He did his time. Do you not believe in rehabilitation? You seem to be bringing up his past offences as if that’s a good enough reason for killing him?

And they had absolutely no clue about any of that during the time of the incident so what’s your point? Kaba wasn’t the registered driver of the vehicle nor did he come up in the police briefing before the incident. Yes, he should have stopped. He should have stopped the car and made it clear that he had no weapons.

I don’t think the reasons you’ve stated, was enough for the office to kill him. Especially as they weren’t even known at the time

I am glad the officer was cleared.
I won't say what I think about Kaba. It wouldn't be pleasant to read.

This. Not the innocent little boy that some would have you believe. Also did time fir violence with a fake firearm. He made his life choices.

You answered whether or not you thought that their lives would matter more if they were civilians surrounding the car that was being revved and driven backwards and forwards aggressively instead of police officers? I must have missed that because I can’t see it?

The issue isn’t that he was black, it was that he was a criminal who had been involved in numerous gun offences. Not sure why you’re trying to conflate the two things?

If someone aims to shoot in the chest but ends up shooting them in their head, maybe they need additional training

Maybe, but that’s not what was on trial here, a chest shot would still have likely killed him. Anyway the upper chest (behind a steering wheel) and head are fairly close together so it’s an easy mistake to make and precisely the reason officers are trained to shoot at the largest part of the body, as very very few people have perfect aim.

Because NO-ONE deserves to be killed at the hands of the police. Criminal or not.

Exactly

Is that sarcasm ? About the non-existent crime? That’s all there is around here with knives and guns (London)!

Black on black crime does not exist. It’s not a really thing. It’s genuinely just crime. If you see the post that I quoted then you’ll understand why I’ve said that

YaWeeFurryBastard · 22/10/2024 18:21

Please tell me how you propose you “shoot to injure” someone who’s sat down behind a steering wheel? If you aim for the shoulder or arm you’ll likely miss and send the bullet through the back of the car posing a risk to the surrounding officers general public. Police officers are trained to shoot at the critical mass i.e. chest, which is what Martyn Blake claims to have done, but hit him in the head.

A lot of talk about confidence in the police being at rock bottom in the local community. How about confidence in the local community deserving to take a knock? We've all spent days/weeks listening to his family wailing on about how tragic and unjust the loss of his life was, police violence, miscarriage of justice etc etc and all along they knew fine well he was an extremely violent, gun-totting gangster. Frankly, I'm disgusted by them as much as him. I doubt many of the local community who stood supporting the family in their protests were unaware of CK's serious criminal activities either, so I'm pretty disgusted with them too.

I get that the majority honest, law abiding black community have their own wholly legitimate grievances with the MET, where institutional racism is a long-standing and ongoing issue. Standing beside the families of violent thugs does them no favours though. The enemy of your enemy is not necessarily your friend. They may well be your enemy too.

Do his family not feel any embarrassment about how their son's turned out.

They did not say that a disproportionate number of black men are the victims of knife and gun homicide.. carried out by other black men.

Black on black crime doesn’t exist. Hope that helps.

How about they shoot to injure and not shoot to kill? Why would you issue an immediate head shot which is an instant kill shot?

The C4 news report I saw was also a disgrace, showing statistics (correct) that a disproportionate number of black men are killed in police shooting. They did not say that a disproportionate number of black men are the victims of knife and gun homicide.. carried out by other black men.

Unfortunately this is a fact, and harder for the black community for obvious reasons. And it’s. For many reasons , obvious and complex, and factors which are not the fault or responsibility of black people. Short version: I’m not saying back k people are intrinsically more criminal anyone else.

But for C4 to trot out stats in a context that made it look as if this death was racist is irresponsible, IMO.

And takes focus away from the ways in which the Met do disgrace themselves with racism and misogyny in other ways.

OK some background to Chris Kaba. Previous offence....

"Kaba had been charged in 2018 with possessing an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence,[3] in relation to an incident on 30 December 2017.[4] He was found guilty at Snaresbrook Crown Court in January 2019, and sentenced to four years in a Young Offenders Institute.[4] He was released in 2021.[4]"

So had history and did time.

And what does this prove? He wasn’t the registered driver of the car and none of this was known at the time of the incident. So what’s your point?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 22/10/2024 18:06

Beautifully put, @WalkingThroughTreacle
As a PP mentioned, police shooting people is (thankfully) very rare, and nor is it always black men when it does happen, despite several attempts to claim this is the case

Unfortunately, it suits some - criminals and their enablers in particular - to encourage and exaggerate this distrust, not only to excuse their own wrongdoing but also in the hope that surveillance will be hampered

He wasn't armed He was using his car as a weapon. And perhaps if he’d stopped his car when he was asked to, he’d have had the opportunity to show he wasn’t armed.

from the footage no one was in imminent danger Several police officers and a jury would disagree with you.

The officer who shot him stood in front of the car and shot him in the head Pretty sure that’s not accurate. And if it were, so what?

I thought the police were meant to disarm people, not kill them Give over. What were they supposed to do? Tap on the window and ask him to roll it down so they could spray him? If they’d shot him non lethally, and he’d had a gun, he could have killed anyone. If you’re going to be put in a position where you have to make the choice of whether or not to use lethal force, you have a responsibility to protect your colleagues and the general public over someone who had already demonstrated that he didn’t care who he hurt in his attempts to escape.

How about they shoot to injure and not shoot to kill? Why would you issue an immediate head shot which is an instant kill shot?

Disappointing but unsurprising news

ChefsKisser · 22/10/2024 17:53

I listened to the trial podcast completely incredulous that it had gone to court and felt so sorry for Martyn Blake and that was before I know Chris Kabas criminal past. His behaviour was completely at odds with any law abiding citizen, it was clearly a very dangerous situation and all the other police officers agreed they would have done the same. What a waste of public money when Chris Kaba sounded like a completely nightmare and danger to society.

MilletOver · 22/10/2024 17:27

fairydust11 · 22/10/2024 17:15

@ChesterDrawz& @MilletOver

I didn’t realise that at all.
I though it hadn’t been reported previously due to the ongoing case.
Thanks for clarifying.

The night club shooting trial was subject to reporting restrictions, yes, because of this trial upcoming. And a jury is never told about a defendant's previous convictions before they retire to consider their verdict.

But in preparation of the end of the trial the family tried to take out an injunction against reporting after the MB trial. It had to go to a court hearing this morning where the judge threw out their case.

That's why the reports of his former life weren't publicised yesterday after the trial.

The whole media knew he was the shooter in the nightclub incident.

hattie43 · 22/10/2024 17:22

I'm incredulous that people are protesting the killing of this brutal individual. The streets are safer today with one less violent criminal on them . Play by the gun die by the gun .
