WINTER FUEL PAYMENT

cobden28 · 21/10/2024 10:29

A couple of days ago I received the official letter from the DWP telling me I'm not going to receive the Winter Fuel payment this year because, although I am within the required age group, I'm not in receipt of the listed benefits. I am 69 years of age.
On the same day I also received notifiication from my energy supplier of the amount of my next Direct Debit monthly payment and a request to submit my meter readings. I've contacted the energy supplier and arranged for them to send round a meter reader, so they can't be in a position to dispute the readings oobtained.
Then once I get my billing sorted i'm going to have to work out how to cut my energy bill. My proposed method is to turn off the central heating and only use the gas fire in the living room for heating - I feel uncomfortable if a room is too warm and the gas fire chucks out lots of heat anyway.

Is there a history of the company disputing your readings? Why not just take a photo of the reading on your phone.

I also don't understand the general gist of your OP!

@EasternStandard Cant help noticing they use poor families as a stick to beat pensioners with then berate those same families for being social housing tenants. Was a big thing during Covid too. Using one group to denigrate another when they dont give a shit about the first group apart from using them as stick to beat others with.

@jenniferbooth I have always stuck up for benefit claimants, council tenants and HA tenants on this site. I don't agree with the WFA decision.

But people starting threads pretending that because they are losing £200 over a three month period they will only be able to afford to heat one room is really distasteful. It also minimises the difficulties of those who really will be hurt by the loss of the WFA. Such pretence deserves to be called out.

It is amazing that the only people moaning about no longer getting this payment are the ones that don't actually bloody need it. Every OAP that I know in real life(who are all sitting in a mortgage free 3/4 bed house) have all said they gave to charity or used it towards Christmas. So they weren't even using it to heat their houses anyway.

This.

It's another thread designed to pursue the freezing pensioners narrative and froth about the government.

Yep.

I'll say it again.
Where was the outrage when benefits were capped at two children, forcing hundreds of children into poverty for a decision that they themselves weren't responsible for?

Not many that I could see. Mostly gleeful comments about scroungers deserving it.

If you're not entitled then you don't 'need' it, OP.
Those hungry children however...

Well I very naughtily AS'd OP. She says she is not exactly struggling but not in the lap of luxury either. So, not sure what her game is here.

Do you do this for other posters who say they receive more than one benefit?

Interesting.
So the OP gets PIP and her state pension and her civil service pension..........

Jeezo.

Especially as my df had already received the letter telling him how much he would get, which he won't now.
And as he's over 90 it was going to be £600.

How come it would be £600? Surely it’s £300, as over 80?

I get my pension next year and am appalled at the greed of many pensioners who acknowledge they don't need this, know there are younger people in far greater need yet still feel entitled to complain at the withdrawal of this payment

That’s great but surely you can acknowledge as Age UK does about 2.5m will be in hardship

Are you and pp ok with those people getting it cut?

Bignanna · 21/10/2024 14:36

Moier · 21/10/2024 11:07

I turn a pensioner next month.
My energy supplier had told me it's added £140 via the home warmth scheme credit to my account.
I'm already in credit by paying extra over the summer months.. knowing I'll be okay to keep my house warm over the winter.
The £300 that Stammer has robbed us off would have helped loads of us too.

The WFA is only £300 for those over 80, who qualify. Otherwise it’s £200.,

Apparently, all pensioners are poor and should still receive the WFA that Starmer has stolen, even those pensioners shivering in their £1 million homes worrying about how to avoid paying inheritance tax.

PandoraSox · 21/10/2024 14:13

I think this just may be another post from Tory Central Office.

anniegun · 21/10/2024 14:00

Why should hard working families have to subsidise the fuel bills of non- working pensioners who have more disposable income than they do?

ilovesooty · 21/10/2024 13:52

thepariscrimefiles · 21/10/2024 13:18

You've just said that you will be OK to heat your home this winter so why do you need the £300 WFA?

The government hasn't robbed you, because that would be taking away something you already had. You aren't even a pensioner yet.

She seemingly didn't need the handout she got. And when she reaches pension age she'll be someone who doesn't need a WFA either. I'm tired of hearing the whinging from well off pensioners (and I do think there should be more effective tapering to support pensioners near the threshold) who are cross because they think they have been denied some money they feel entitled to. I'm more concerned about children and vulnerable families in poverty.

Davros · 21/10/2024 13:49

You don't need someone to come round to read your meters. Take photos and log them online

ilovesooty · 21/10/2024 13:45

WiserOlderElf · 21/10/2024 13:05

It would ‘help’ most people id imagine, pensioner or not. Doesn’t mean they all need it though.
I absolutely think the threshold should have been higher than it has currently been set at, but that doesn’t mean that all pensioners need, or should get, the winter fuel payment.

Absolutely.

I can't really understand what the op wants to discuss here.

Nothing at all!

The OP has thrown a grenade in the room and we are getting the usual answers.

TheShellBeach · 21/10/2024 13:36

cobden28 · 21/10/2024 10:43

This was an official letter from the DWP, so it's genuine.

Yes.
If you don't get pension credit you're not entitled to WFP.

You should check with the pension credit department. You'd be surprised how many people don't claim it because they believe they're not entitled to it.

If you're disabled you should also claim Attendance Allowance.
