WINTER FUEL PAYMENT

cobden28 · 21/10/2024 10:29

A couple of days ago I received the official letter from the DWP telling me I'm not going to receive the Winter Fuel payment this year because, although I am within the required age group, I'm not in receipt of the listed benefits. I am 69 years of age.
On the same day I also received notifiication from my energy supplier of the amount of my next Direct Debit monthly payment and a request to submit my meter readings. I've contacted the energy supplier and arranged for them to send round a meter reader, so they can't be in a position to dispute the readings oobtained.
Then once I get my billing sorted i'm going to have to work out how to cut my energy bill. My proposed method is to turn off the central heating and only use the gas fire in the living room for heating - I feel uncomfortable if a room is too warm and the gas fire chucks out lots of heat anyway.

So you've had help towards your energy bills, plus you have been able to put aside money to pay the bills, yet you are on here whining that you've been "robbed"?!! The fucking entitlement. This has to be a joke.

I know! What a fucking cheek! There was some pensioner on the telly sitting in his big house, on his leather sofa, wearing a Rolex mithering about not getting his winter fuel payment. Come on, get a grip mate

mumda · 21/10/2024 17:15

Your front room fire will cost more than your heating and cause damp and cold problems to appear elsewhere in your house.

@NewName24 he letter doesn't tell me I'm not getting it. It tells me that I will qualify if... (and lists the benefits I would need to receive to qualify, which I don't). It then goes on to encourage people to apply for those benefits, and explains how, which I think is an important reason to send the letter.

Yes, then it could serve a really useful purpose!

See my post above. They've always sent letters at this time of the year telling me I'm getting it. So the one today telling me I'm not, is costing no more.

And, presumably, they won’t have to send one next year and in future years.

NewName24 · 21/10/2024 17:08

saraclara · 21/10/2024 16:45

Presumably the same amount that was spent on the letter they sent me each year telling me I'm going to get it.

So no difference.

I didn't realise they did that.

No difference then, except, what they could have done is saved all that money by just not sending them.

I mean, if they previously thought everyone who was going to get it, needed to be told, the same logic could be applied in that, if they haven't been told, no-one will be expecting it.

I suspect, across the year, the Government, (and the NHS which I know we've debated here on MN before) could save millions upon millions of pounds purely by not sending everyone pointless letters. Might be a good place to start - set up a 'hotline' / on-line way of people suggesting ways money could be saved.

NewName24 · 21/10/2024 17:04

HeadNorth · 21/10/2024 16:44

See the WASPI women - it doesn't matter how many times you tell people, if they don't like the message. The Government had no choice but to send out all those letters. And I bet they still get people claiming they didn't know.

So, by that logic, there clearly is no point in sending them a letter, as they won't like the message, so won't be consoled by getting a letter about it.

What is more of a scandal is that they are spending millions of ££ sending out individual letters to everyone!

I mean, it's hardly been a secret there has been this change, has it?

In previous years, they sent out letters to confirm it anyway. There should be no need to inform people about a benefit they won’t be getting, especially given the amount of publicity, but were probably preempting the complaints if they didn’t send out letters individually.

That’s great but surely you can acknowledge as Age UK does about 2.5m will be in hardship

Are you and pp ok with those people getting it cut?

Age UK say themselves that 1m of those people would still be eligible for the winter fuel payment they claimed pension credit which they’re entitled to, but they haven’t.

There have been lots of times, over the years, that The Simpsons have had things that were pointed out to be very true to life
In an episode this weekend, Grandpa bought Bart a fantastic birthday present and was asked where he got the money for it. He replied "From the government. I didn't ask for it, I don't need it but if anyone tries to take it away from me I'll raise merry hell" Grin It made me think of the WFP debacle

Do you not think of any of the 2.5m who will see hardship?

Is it really grinning emoji for that?

Boomer55 · 21/10/2024 16:48

We’ve all had letters. I knew I’m not going to get it. EDF sent me a letter saying they were going to increase my DD. As I’m £300 in credit, I phoned them and told them that, no, they are not.🙄

All sorted. 👍

I didn't ask for the handout.. it's just part of my energy providers scheme.
I didn't save money. I was given compensation.
I'd rather be fit and well both physically and mentally.
Have my pelvis perfect.. my vagina back... no more pain.
No more accidents and falls etc.
Stop having so many operations .
Beable to do more with my Grandsons
Yes I've money and a beautiful large bungalow.
I pay for a gardener/ cleaner etc
I will be funding some of my future operations too..
But some of the charities l support aren't so lucky.. some of the old people too.

Well think how many more people you could help if you claimed your state pension.

nor will l be claiming my pension.

In which case you wouldn’t have got WFA anyway. And you’re in a position not to claim £220 a week and still complaining. Words fail me.

You didn’t need to be claiming state pension to receive it; The payment just turned up once you reached state pension age.

RhubarbAndCustardSweets · 21/10/2024 16:13

Bjorkdidit · 21/10/2024 12:17

They won't do that because in most cases it will show that they can easily afford to heat their homes, along with other expenses to a fairly decent standard.

I know that single pensioners just above the limit might struggle, but many others really don't need an extra £2/300 per year. Plus there's a whole host of benefits available to pensioners on low incomes or with additional needs if they just applied.

There was a couple on BBC Moneybox last week talking about how hard done by they were but they had 2 x state pensions plus 'small employer's pensions' on top, so likely well over £2k pm coming in, with no housing costs. So enough for food, bills, and day to day leisure at least. The £4/5 a week they've lost is a tiny percentage of their income and their pension will go up by £9 a week each next April.

I know, that's why I wrote it 😉

I may sound unsympathetic, but I do begrudge pensioners whinging about losing £300, knowing they retired at 60 and will have had 7 years worth of pension more than I will ever get (£££) as I cant retire until I am 67

Edited

Perhaps it would help you to feel better about it if you consider that the retirement age inceased from 60, for women, in 2010. For men it was already 65. So the only pensioners who could claim their state pension at 60 are women currently over 74, born before 1950. These women would typically have left school at 15 at a time when only 4% of the population went to university. They had already been working for 7 years by the time they were 22. They did an 'extra' 7 years at the start of their working lives, compared to today's workforce where the majority didn't start work till after university or college. Perhaps that balances out the 'extra' 7 years that people now have to wait for their pensions.

I do wonder what size home you have OP.

I'm 67 and was due to get the WFA this year but got the same letter.

However DH & I are both retired so have heating on 7am - 11pm 7 days pw at most, but the most expensive it's been was £110 last February. (I submit meter readings online every month end and we pay by variable DD). Certainly affordable.

We have gas CH in a 2 bed Victorian terrace.

That seems very cheap for having your heating on for 16 hours a day 7 days a week, £110?

Is that estimated or from actual readings? What do you have your thermostat set at?

Just realised you said actual readings.

Moier · 21/10/2024 15:35

thepariscrimefiles · 21/10/2024 13:24

You've just said that you don't need the WFA and would give it away so why are you so angry at not getting it? Also, why won't you be claiming your pension or disability benefits? There is money that you are entitled to claim but won't but you are getting angry about a much smaller benefit that you have never been entitled to and don't need anyway.

Your situation sounds difficult but you aren't really making sense.

Because .. l.think it's wrong that so many people do need it .l give to loads of local charities.
I sticking up for those that do need it.

@jenniferbooth I have always stuck up for benefit claimants, council tenants and HA tenants on this site. I don't agree with the WFA decision.

But people starting threads pretending that because they are losing £200 over a three month period they will only be able to afford to heat one room is really distasteful. It also minimises the difficulties of those who really will be hurt by the loss of the WFA. Such pretence deserves to be called out.

You’ve searched the op and someone else has listed PIP as a benefit meaning the op has a disability
