Restaurants adding honey to cheese!

Baked Camembert ruined by drowning it in honey, same for mozzarella sticks.

Who started this awful trend for adding honey to perfectly good cheese?

Or am I weird for not liking it?

I like some honey with cheese, particularly truffle honey with pecorino. But I don’t think it should come as a surprise. It’s an allergen even if not a notifiable one, and also quite a distinct taste that some people actively avoid.

I like blue cheese with walnuts but don't fancy honey.

Oh, now that sounds more like it!

VictorianBigot · 20/10/2024 17:16

@HappyDane When I bake camembert I use aromatics like thyme, rosemary

I would cry if I ordered Camembert and it came with rosemary or thyme. They’re abominations.

Are you Julie Bindel? I love the super grumpy food rants she’s been going on lately. www.spectator.co.uk/article/its-time-to-ban-balsamic

It's delicious! A restaurant near to us does honey and goats cheese pizza and it tastes incredible.

DanielaDressen · 20/10/2024 17:11

I had hot honey and pear on a pizza in a restaurant recently and it was lovely.

ZwarteZwaan · 20/10/2024 17:08

Hot honey is the new (in the UK anyway) salted caramel.

Cheepcheepcheep · 20/10/2024 17:07

God you’ve just reminded me of the breakfast I had in Morocco - street stand that made crepes with goats cheese and honey. One of the best breakfasts I’ve ever had….

Should have been on the menu though - that’s a real no no.

Gingerbee · 20/10/2024 17:02

I like a LITTLE drizzled over brie and walnuts.
I like blue cheese with walnuts but don't fancy honey.
Definitely, wouldn't want honey with cheddar.
I don't like cheddar with fruit cake either.

AnnieMcFanny · 20/10/2024 17:01

Honey with cheese is also a Middle Eastern thing and has been for eleventy thousand years.

Blarn · 20/10/2024 17:01

It's not new, I was eating cheese and honey combinations many years ago in Sardinia. It's just having a moment here.

buffyfaithspike · 20/10/2024 16:58

I love it. Avocado on a flatbread, topped with a fried egg and halloumi cooked in chilli oil and honey

HappyDane · 20/10/2024 16:57

Mind you was it just plain camembert with honey? I don't think I'd like that very much as the cheese isn't strong enough. Better with something that has more punch.

When I bake camembert I use aromatics like thyme, rosemary, garlic, chilli. Plenty of olive oil. A little drizzle of honey over the top at the end is the perfect finishing touch! Serve it with roasted nuts/dried fruits, figs, olives etc.

(Making myself hungry now)

I expect they were eating honey and cheese together thousands of years ago, it's been around a while...

Have to say I prefer grape nectar, though.

I don't love it either - the combination of sweet and salty and cheesy tends to remind me of vomiting.

you vomiting cheese n honey, hon?

😫😂

TroysMammy · 20/10/2024 16:56

I've drizzled honey and thyme leaves on goat's cheese crostini and slightly melted it under the grill. Delicious as a starter.

RoseAylingEllisFanClub · 20/10/2024 16:55

If it is not printed on the menu, it isn’t an accurate description of the item for the customer, and they’d be within their rights to send it back.

I would, on the grounds both that I hadn’t been told about it, and because I detest honey. It’s far too cloying for my taste.

I would never order anything that explicitly said it came with honey, or at least I’d ask for it to be served without, e.g. not drizzled on top.

Honey is one of the more obscure allergens - not a mandatory labelling requirement in the UK currently. I’m not allergic to it, but my extremely bad hay fever is, I suspect, one of the key reasons for my dislike - it’s an instinctive avoidance of a pollen product.

In this day and age, I expect food businesses to accurately describe what’s on offer on the menu - no ifs, buts, prevarication or quibbling. Natasha’s Law should have taught them that. Food waste is another issue - it’s unnecessary and they should cut down on issues that cause customers to send food back (cook it properly first time, then you won’t have to bin it and do a fresh one, for example! miss out the honey or have it in a little pot as an optional extra on request).

Eating out should be a relaxing and enjoyable experience, and it isn’t if ingredients are sprung on you (whether personal taste, religious or ethical reasons, or health dietary requirements).

Ginmonkeyagain · 20/10/2024 16:53

You often get honey and fresh figs on cheeseboards in the south of France.

PadstowGirl · 20/10/2024 16:53

I'm going to try the feta with honey!

Helpimfalling · 20/10/2024 16:51

My sons just airfryed last nights leftover takeaway pizza with grated mozzerella and honey.

It's beautiful but does get sickly after two slices.

MiscellaneousSupportHuman · 20/10/2024 16:47

It's not a new trend, it's just a different (and foreign) way

But I think it only suits a sharp, salty cheese.

Just like Christmas cake only really goes with Cheshire, Lancashire and Wensleydale or perhaps Cheddar

Did you mean to be so rude?

NeverEnoughPants · 20/10/2024 16:46

Why, are you offering toottoot one? 😱 Not sure that's what mumsnet is for...

First time any post has literally made me HOWL 🤣🤣🤣

MzHz · 20/10/2024 16:46

Goats cheese with honey and nuts is absolutely incredible- I get it in Portugal

when in Greece this year, we were given an OLIVE In honey

that was weird. Even when we told Greeks about it, THEY thought it was weird, but we ate there a couple of times and got used to it 🙂
