To say no to covid vaccine for DS?

Clarabell77 · 20/10/2024 08:55

My DS10 has asthma - mild albeit a chest infection 14 months ago ended up in an overnight in hospital on a nebuliser/steroid and he’s had to have a steroid once during that time for another infection.

He’s been identified as being at risk and offered a Covid vaccine. I’m not sure whether to allow him to have it as I’m sure he’s had Covid quite a few times when we’ve all tested positive at home - can’t test him as he won’t let me near him with a swab. He’s had mild symptoms, even when ours weren’t.

He’s had the flu vaccine twice and taken unwell within weeks on both occasions so I’ve opted out of that one this year. Does anyone have any thoughts on the Covid one? Ideally someone who has actual knowledge, not from YouTube, I’m not a covid denier or anti vaxxer.

AIBU to not get him the vaccine?

@Clarabell77 I could be wrong here, but I doubt you ever consider the risks of the food, drink, snacks and takeaways that your DS consumes. Unless you’re avoiding supermarkets and takeaways then I think you’re naive to avoid vaccines. If you don’t understand how adversely, popular white sliced bread affects your ability to fight illness, virus’ and disease then you probably shouldn’t make a decision that goes against what the professional healthcare providers suggest.

You are wrong but I take your point about professional healthcare providers knowing best, I used it myself against covid deniers and anti vaxxers. I think it’s just because he really had such mild symptoms with Covid there’s a bit of me thinking why bother taking even a tiny risk (which health professionals will admit there is).

The flu injection is not as effective in children. The nasal spray contains trace amounts of porcine gelatine but the Muslim council of Britain have said Muslim children may have the nasal spray in good faith as they recognise how important it is to keep communities protected.

Vaccines are black triangle medicines which means there is really strict recording and monitoring of side effects. If you give anything to millions of people, some will have side effects. But there is no evidence to suggest the harms of the vaccines outweigh the benefits.

If you don’t believe this and instead think that Public Health are spending billions of pounds vaccinating people for some nefarious reasons, then you are going down the conspiracy theory route.

As you will be aware, asthma is unpredictable and deadly - personally I wouldn’t take the risk of my child not being protected against current strains of Covid of flu as the viruses do tend to mutate.

To be fair, given the last government’s handling of PPE contracts and the high likelihood of many of our decision-makers having investments in pharmaceutical companies or receiving massive donations from them (especially the Tory party), I don’t think we can just assume money is being spent on medicines and vaccines with public health always being the priority.

I wouldn't give that crap to my worst enemy, never mind my own kids.

The first time he got the flu vaccine he ended up with severe tonsillitis, he was very ill, so bad we had to take him to A&E as we didn’t know what was wrong. He’d never had tonsillitis up until then. The second time he wasn’t quite as ill but still sick enough to be off school, cough, wheeze etc. I don’t know for certain it’s linked to the vaccine, could of course just be coincidence, but it made me wary.

The flu jab did not give your son tonsillitis?

seriously, step away from the internet and go and chat to an actual medical professional about your concerns, I think they could help.

poetryandwine · 20/10/2024 12:14

PS And I generally support vaccines, including for Covid

People were literally told - Priti Patel bring a name that springs to mind - that the vaccine was safe for all. If so many people in this country are as stupid as they’re being made out to be on this thread - maybe they shouldn’t have been told it was safe for all. I’m not debating this further because I am simply telling you what was said at the time. And it was said.

I don’t remember this but if she said it, it was but one of her many lies.

Leaving aside the covid jab for a minute.

what do you mean your son took ill several weeks after the flu jab? Took ill how? and how exactly do you know that’s linked to the flu jab ?

For all people, in all age groups, the risks from the Covid vaccine are lower than from the disease the vaccine protects from.

Obviously, in a large population, there will always be some people who have side-effects from a vaccine, but there are a much larger number of people who are alive and didn't get seriously ill as a result of having the vaccine.

The conceptual problem we all have is that you can see the people who were unlucky with the vaccine, but you can't see all the people who have been saved by it.

MumofCrohnie · 20/10/2024 12:00

My DD has Crohn's disease and we are offered these vaccs too.

She gets the flu vaccine each year but we don't bother with the covid one any more. She has had covid at least 3 times and never more than a sore throat and cold symptoms.

If a mutated covid emerges that is much more severe, we will re-evaluate.

Nogaxeh · 20/10/2024 11:58

I would take all the vaccines offered.

AyrshireTryer · 20/10/2024 11:57

I can remember the fear.
I can remember the number of the dead increasing day after day.
I can remember the hope when the vaccine was discovered.
How quickly we forget.

VioletCrawleyForever · 20/10/2024 11:57

Why wouldn't you?

Anything to spare my kids getting sick I accept.

I got the Covid vaccine in 2022 due to the insane and draconian restrictions in Ireland at the time. I haemorrhaged for two days after the vaccine and was diagnosed with very advanced uterine cancer in 2023. I’d strongly advise you to say no to the Covid vaccine.

I'm very sorry for what you are going through

But that has nothing to do with a 10 year old boy with asthma

Patel said it was "safe". I don't know why you are so hung up about "safe for all".

Hancock's announcement on the vaccine. He mentions "safe and effective", not "safe for all".

@Choosenandenough but all medications can have side effects

Choosenandenough · 20/10/2024 11:41

PandoraSox · 20/10/2024 11:37

People were told the vaccine was "safe and effective". That is not the same as saying completely risk free. All "safe and effective" medicines have potential side effects.

Yes they were. They were told numerous times in televised public addresses that the vaccine was safe for all. Regardless of whether they were given leaflets at the time of injection, and let’s face it, it’s been strongly implied on this tread that many people are clearly ‘too thick’ to understand said leaflets - we were told on national television in public address that the vaccine was safe for all. That is a fact.

No they weren't. When people went for the vaccine they were given a leaflet outlining the risks.

Do we really have to split this into a ‘you’re clearly a superior being if you never question a vaccine versus you’re thick as shit if you do’ debate? There are risks of myocarditis associated with the covid vaccine amongst young males. That’s a fact. Despite people being told that wasn’t the case earlier in the roll out. Yes all vaccines come with risks. However people were told categorically at the time that the vaccine was safe for all. You actually can’t say that as no vaccine is safe for all and yet numerous medical experts and politicians did in fact say those very words. People are coming from a place of distrust because their trust was broken. I’m not saying this applies to me, I’m just saying that this is the situation and it’s understandable. OP no one can make the decision for you except you. People can tell you not to get it and there could be repercussions for your son, people can tell you to get it and again, there could be repercussions for your son - it’s difficult to decide but ultimately the choice is yours and you have to make the best choice you can based on the information you have.
