Labour planning to freeze tax thresholds longer

In the news today that they’re considering freezing the income tax thresholds past 2028. AIBU to think this is absolutely a tax rise for workers? I can’t believe they’d do this, they’ve been frozen for so long already.

There has been lots of this everywhere though, not just on MN.

I'm not saying I agree with it. I'd rather the most wealthy pay their fair share, but I will wait until the budget. I think going after benefit claimants are really low, especially the disabled since we have barely functioning services at the moment, but again,t that's speculative until it is official.

They will. PIP reform will be looked at 2025. They are agreeing the £ cuts to welfare the Tories suggested will still need to happen in some form. You can’t have such a huge percentage of the population not contributing. 25% of the working population are now economically inactive. That’s before you get on to the growing number of elderly. It’s not low. It’s realistic. The problem is - they were not honest about it. The Tories were to some extent. Not that I’d vote for them.

In November 2023 Rachel Reeves said:

"People on average earnings are paying more in tax because they have been dragged into higher tax brackets. That is a sign of failure. The (Tory) Government is picking the pockets of working people."

Two Tier Keir and Pickpocket Rachel then...?

As opposed to virus helping Rishi, shagging, lying criminal Boris, lettuce Liz and Kamikwaze Kwarteng then?
Stupid names are stupid whoever employs them, but it’s a bit shortsighted for a Tory to try it…

Everyone already knows what’s in the budget. It’s already gone to the OBR. That’s why all these leaks are happening. The press is already doing the job of warning. A thread on MN will make no difference.

Yes, the money has to come from somewhere. It just seems that many people expect "someone else" to pay for it. Personally I think they made a mistake in promising no rise in so many forms of taxation - it boxes them into a corner. However I remember the Lib Dems once having tax rises in their manifesto. It didn't end well.

CruCru · 19/10/2024 17:29

Summernightsinthe21stcentury · 19/10/2024 12:22

I wonder where you all think they are supposed to get the money to do the things they need to do, like you know health, education, public services, etc..
Whatever they do, there will be threads like this popping up all over the place, shouting them down.
Maybe you are all happy that our services are shot to pieces?

I was going to say something like this. God knows I am no fan of Labour but if there is a massive shortfall then it needs to come from
somewhere. Labour have taken away / means tested the winter fuel allowance and are putting VAT on school fees. These will (largely) affect the electorate who tend to vote Tory. But it isn’t enough - they need to tax everyone to raise enough.

The problem is that so many people think they should tax “the rich”. Supposedly those earning over £50k make up the top 15% of earners - I don’t know many people earning that who would class themselves as rich.

I thought you’d dodge that one. Never mind.

I guess you thought yes those tax rises will happen. I doubt others will be as happy about that particular lie.

I doubt if you really want to get into a conversation about dodging questions. Have a pleasant evening.

EasternStandard · 19/10/2024 17:20

ilovesooty · 19/10/2024 17:11

That's not the question I asked you, but I expect experience should have told me that hoping you'd answer the question you'd been asked was rather optimistic. Never mind.

In terms of tax rises I do recall talk of tax rises actually, but not from Labour. That’s pretty low when it comes to hiding information from the electorate to get in.

I also remember huge backlash due to it. Did you think oh yes those rises sound about right?

So did you expect total transparency from all the other parties? That's the third time I've asked you.

George Osborne literally said RR was a mini me. Yet people on here thought she’d be the one to stop those evil Tory welfare reforms. Yet it looks like those cuts and PIP reform as still going to happen in a similar form. People were scarily naive about this version of Labour. Workers will do ok because they won’t want to upset the unions. This will be their pain. However, it is a hypocritical stealth tax.

Not really, and surely this should be levelled at the early doom ‘it will be painful’ press conference those weeks ago.

It’s all speculation u til the budget comes out. Why do people continue to post these threads winding everybody up about something that has not happened and may not happen at all. Labour ‘considering’ this - says who?

This.

Do people not realise that the more you post about the media speculation (which is mostly right wing and hate Labour) the more it softens the blow for actually doing it as they think people are expecting it anyway, and therefore makes it more likely to actually become a reality.

Starting these threads is the worst thing you can do if it is something you don't actually want. Bloody stupid thing to do.

Absolutely this. Like business owners, sole traders, partnerships etc are not "working people".

Makes me so angry

’Yes. Tax rises if necessary. It's what I expected when I voted. However if they'd laid that out explicitly it would have affected their vote.’

I mean this seems very Labour. It’s ok to hide information to get in

It’s quite fast for a reversal of narrative.

Maybe there will be backlash from others.

Oh FFS, the old ' if you criticise Labour, you're a Tory' lazy thinking again. Now that really is tired now.

It's pretty lazy thinking to interpret "the hardcore" as "anyone who criticises".

NoWordForFluffy · 19/10/2024 15:45

cardibach · 19/10/2024 14:05

I’ve criticised them myself elsewhere. The ‘hardcore’ here appears to be Tories who can’t admit their Party fucked the country royally.

Aaron95 · 19/10/2024 15:20

Why is this a surprise to anyone? The UK has become poorer compared to 10 years ago. There are several causes of this including Brexit, changes in the world economy and the aging UK population.

Any UK government either has to increase taxation or reduce public services. They suggest increasing tax on the wealthy people complain they will all leave the country. They suggest reducing services people complain about that. This suggestion is to tax everyone a bit more and still people complain.

lollylo · 19/10/2024 15:10

Might as well get done cash back after generous pay offers to jds and train drivers - many of whom will be in the higher tax brackets. It will impact me, but I think we are going to have to pay more tax. I’d rather this than other changes to be honest

"Your Labour mates"? Who would they be then? I think those calling other posters bots - of whichever party - have been recently and in my opinion rightly deleted.
