Kylian Mbappe accused of rape - AIBU to be a bit shocked

Mbappe has been accused of raping a woman in a hotel in Sweden.

In Sweden they are confirming it is definitely him and they've reported on it because they feel it's in the public interest. The woman went to get medical attention and reported the incident straight after. AIBU to be a bit shocked if true? I know everyone will say what do you expect and don't look up to footballers etc, but I'm a woman who enjoys watching football and it's so disheartening how many footballers end up assaulting women. I thought Mbappe was maybe one of the good ones. Hope it's not true, but if it is, that there will be justice for the victim. Apparently Sweden has some of the best laws regarding rape on the planet, so that is encouraging at least.

Kylian Mbappé reacts with fury at Swedish reports of rape claim

Swedish prosecutors say a rape investigation had been opened in Stockholm without mentioning Kylian Mbappé, following media reports that the France captain and Real Madrid star was the suspect

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of elite sportsmen who have never raped someone.

You are of course right but that doesn't fit the narrative that many are keen to push.

Kylian Mbaope is a young gorgeous rich talented footballer and still rapes (allegedly). this man could sleep with four different women every night. What makes them rape so much?

Because they can.

Wasn't the figure around 78% of men said they would rape if they could get away with it?

Fabrador · 16/10/2024 12:19

Can’t not think of Ferengi…

Misogyny. That's why so many footballers also cheat on their spouses. They are emotionally unintelligent. Uneducated young men with lots of money are rarely very nice.

DalRiata · 16/10/2024 12:17

Sad to see people disbelieving the woman. I would always automatically believe the woman because the incidences of women lying about rape are far, far lower than the incidences of women being raped. It's always a possibility they are lying but it's much more likely that she is not.

Referring to women as "females" is usually a telltale sign that someone is a raging misogynist especially when they refer to men as men rather than "males". Why do you feel the need to dehumanise women?

As for "crying rape", the number of false rape allegations made is tiny.

Eh?

PortiasBiscuit · 16/10/2024 12:16

Last time I checked being accused wasn’t the same as being guilty. Just saying.

DalRiata · 16/10/2024 12:15

The whole visit was really odd actually. He came to Stockholm for a night went to a nightclub then flew back the next day. There was no official reason for him to come to Stockholm as far as the press is aware. Suddenly he was just papped leaving a club, the next morning the police are at his hotel checking his room.

it's true though that the rape laws in Sweden are excellent although the sentences are too short. A man was just sentenced for rape against children after having coerced them to show their bodies over the internet, so he was never physically near the children but it was still considered rape. I don't know if that's the same in the UK but I was surprised that it was considered rape.

He'd probably get a three month suspended sentence for that in the UK, and be put on the register of course.

It never surprises me the lengths other women go to automatically defend men and accuse other women of making false rape claims.

Quite sad really. All it does is make it harder and harder for women to speak out because they are dismissed at the first complaint "because he's one of the good guys and would never do that"

I wouldn't classify Mbappe as a decent human being, regardless of his alleged sexual activities.

This was my first thought when I read your post too OP

nothingcomestonothing · 16/10/2024 11:08

It is extremely rare for men to be falsely accused of raped, whereas men committing rape is not rare at all

That's a frightening image.

No, im not surprised that yet another footballer is accused of rape.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 16/10/2024 12:05

Sky news are saying that a rape accusation has been made, but the authorities in Sweden have not named the suspect.

Doglady1764 · 16/10/2024 12:02

I completely empathise OP. Though I’m completely aware about violence from
men towards women, but with some celebrities you build up a picture in your mind of who you think they are. It’s always really disappointing when we find out some are very different to how they appear.

TheSpottedZebra · 16/10/2024 12:01

Yep, I with you, OP. Of course I want justice, and of course we always hear 'but he seemed so nice' about all sorts of men doing all sorts of awful things..,

But I am also surprised/disappointed etc. As he DID seem like a good, aware man who did talk a lot about social justice issues.

I know it’s irrational because I don’t know the guy but I’m shocked because he always comes across as ok. As a football fan who has lived in France for 20 years, I really, really don’t want to believe it but at the same time I really, really want the woman to get justice, whatever the outcome of that would be.

I do think the most important thing right now is that it should be a trial via the courts, not the media or social media.

Exactly, it is the same for me as well. I feel often the immediate response is that it is my fault for idolising an athlete bla bla, but I think that's nonsense. I don't idolise him, but I enjoy watching him play and it's a bit shocking when that person then gets accused of rape. Especially when as far as I'm aware Mbappe had a pretty clean image previously, and I liked that he publicly came out to encourage young French voters to vote in the election, which was contentious.

Men rape women. Females cry rape. What kind of female? Cat, beetle, horse, human? If human, then say human it wouldn't kill you. If you had said something along the lines of "or a woman has made false allegations" I think I would be more inclined to believe you were looking at this from a non-biased viewpoint.
Gosh darned females.

My own personal experience, personally and professionally, is why I don’t agree that it’s rare.

Crying rape does happen and in most cases nothing happens to the accuser even when there is clear evidence that the accuser has lied and the accused was innocent.

I’m out of this discussion, I ave no more to say on this OP or the topic of rape.

Did they lie, or was there just not enough evidence to bring about a prosecution?

nothingcomestonothing · 16/10/2024 11:36

tuvamoodyson · 16/10/2024 11:22

Yes…but if one woman in a million makes a false accusation it has still happened on occasion! I’m not disputing the rareness of it! Simply saying it has happened…

Don't you think that saying a woman might have cried rape or a man might have raped implies they're equally likely? Or even that saying a woman might have 'cried rape' first implies that is the more likely explanation? When in fact one is extremely common and one extremely rare?

It's like saying oh my 96 year old neighbour died, he might have been hit by lightning or he might have died of old age. One is vastly more likely than the other.

Sweden has quite comprehensive rape laws which classify acts that would be defined as sexual assault or indeed merely distasteful in the UK as rape.

A example of this is stealthing - where a man removes a condom without consent during consensual sex. This would be classified as rape in Sweden.

Similarly, if one partner was drunk and therefore consent could not be confirmed, even if the perpetrator's intention was not to commit rape, this would be classified as 'negligent rape' in Sweden.

Needless to say, I would be very supportive of my daughter going to Lund University!

Re Mbappe - he does a lot for charity but that does not preclude him from inappropriate behaviour. Let us let the legal process follow its course

tuvamoodyson · 16/10/2024 11:24

Well, I thought that would go without saying.

I assume when you hear of a woman falsely reporting a rape you also comment saying ‘women are sometimes actually raped by men though’.
