I can't stand 'a hot minute'. What's hot about it?

I retired 2 years ago. My life is one long mooch. I mooch from the coffee shop to the gym to the theatre. Occasionally I mooch off on holiday. Tomorrow I plan to mooch around various banks sorting out my late mums estate before mooching home. I might then have a picky tea.

I'm jealous of your day

Well count me in as one of those, as I LOVE a mooch.

So does Minnie the moocher ,she was a low down hoocha coocha.
As sung by Cab Callaway.

Except the foil is made from aluminium (or if you’re in North America “aluminum”) and not tin.

”And what did he say when you told him blah blah blah…” knowing damn well that conversation never happened

To add to that, trash is an old English word. Etymology below. Shakespeare used the word trash in Othello. Like many words, which hack fallen out of use over here, it’s not an americanism at all. Rather the word trash has been picked up in the US. We still use trashy in the UK.

I quite like some of these but I saw an ad featuring Debbie Harry ‘lensed by’ photographer and that’s just ridiculous.

😑 horrific

CellophaneFlower · 16/10/2024 04:21

"I feel like" instead of "I think". Also irrationally annoys me when people put "And just like that..." when posting a pic of their child moving up a school year or whatever.

These threads just remind me how intolerant people are to cultural differences. Yes, language is culture and different cultures will use the English language in different ways. Culture spreads, others pick up on it. Language is fluid. Deal with it.

It’s not like people are submitting their literature essays with: “Dickens was giving big big energy when Scrooge changed his ways; he was a vibe. It had been a minute since he’d felt joy,” I really don’t see the issue.

It's been a minute since I've heard anyone mention mooching 🤷🏾‍♀️.

I’ve never heard anyone say it’s been a minute but it sounds annoying!! Whilst we are on this topic allow me a sleep deprived rant.

“It’s giving…” usually followed by something to do with “vibes”. Fuck off.

Hubby or Hubster 🤢

People missing out the I’m and to the. Eg. “going gym” 🤬

Instead of replying with a laughing emoji or haha saying “I can’t”. Can’t what?? Also fuck off.

Any Americanisms I.e. cops, trash, aluminium foil (it’s fucking tin foil), movies, elevator, candy. I could honestly commit GBH whenever someone uses one of those words.

I feel better now, thank you.

Mooching has always meant both scrounging, and wandering about sort of looking for something.

I often refer to puppies (sadly something I discuss daily with total strangers) 'mooching for a poo' ie, sniffing around slightly distractedly, looking for somewhere to shit.

HeliotropePJs · 16/10/2024 02:49

When I was younger (pre-2000), 'mooching' meant sponging off someone, eating their food and so on. Not sure when/why the meaning changed, or perhaps it's always had multiple meanings. (Could look it up, I suppose...)

I agree wholeheartedly about 'it's been a minute'. That one irritates me more than it should. Also sentences beginning with 'so', as a PP mentioned. Never cared for 'my bad', either, though that's another oldie that's probably not used as much nowadays.

FruityShampoo · 16/10/2024 02:48

Having a mooch on marketplace and it’s been a minute since I last saw “Chester draws. Need gone today”.

Bahhhhhumbug · 16/10/2024 02:45

I can barely manage a grunt in response to customers (work in retail) who feel the need to tell me theyre just getting a few bits for Xmas. This started beginning of October.
I also have to fight not to say 'No you dont !!' when they reply to my 'Do you need a receipt?' by saying 'Oh yes l need one l'm going in another shop'
No you cant be arrested for shoplifting unless they actually see you take it ffs

rainfallpurevividcat · 16/10/2024 02:45

Yes, a bimble is good too.

rainfallpurevividcat · 16/10/2024 02:35

I enjoy a pootle or a potter more than a mooch, myself.

I like the word 'bimble', my friend uses it a lot, and I've never heard it before. 😊
