Pissed off to be told I can only 'carry boys'

AIBU to be pissed off at this. Two boy children absolutely love them and love being a boy mum.

Recently toyed with the idea of a third, but a friend told me that I can't carry girls I can only birth boys.

This really pissed me off and I don't know why.

I would love a girl, but I also would love a boy. It just the way she said it asif there was something wrong with 1. Me or 2. Having boy children.

After being in a relationship with my hubby for maybe 6 months he told me we would have 2 boys! We have 2 boys!! I truly believe we would only ever have boys.

my answer to people who said will you try for a girl is the above story plus I bloody wished I’d asked him to predict the lottery numbers on the same day!!!

FuckMiniBabybells · 15/10/2024 18:56

I wouldn't be pissed off, id just think she was a bit thick tbh.

I've seen this touted on here before now, that if you have two girls or two boys you can only carry the same sex.

It is, of course, total rubbish.

Two children you could have
BB, BG, GB or GG so a 50/50 chance that they're both the same.
So that would be half of the population.

There are a few, very few, genetic conditions that only effect one gender. More often only the boys because they're on the Y chromosome.
In which case it could cause a foetus more like to miscarry if it's a boy. However the dad would also have to be effected as it would be his Y chromosome, which produces the issue that obviously he exists, so even then a boy could be carried to full term and survive to adulthood.

So there probably is a very tiny higher probability of having the same for the third, because of that. But it would effect so few people, and the chances are you'd be aware because of the dad, that you can ignore it.

Imjustlikeyou · 15/10/2024 18:55

There are a few genetic disorders that can lead to spontaneous miscarriage of male embryos, but they are very rare. And women who carry the DNA for those disorders typically show other symptoms. Outside of those rare diseases, there's no genetic reason that we know of for someone to have more boys or girls.@MooDeng not impossible with your mum but vanishingly rare for the majority. Plus my mum didn’t even know the sex of the babies she miscarried!

Aargh why do people feel the need to do this. It doesn't make a difference to anyone else. The only surprise is when you convince yourself you think you know what your having - like a silly gut feeling and get it "wrong". Fwiw I had two boys, fell pregnant with a third child, we both for whatever reason fully expected another boy (kept clothes etc) and when we found out we were having a girl we were floored. Not in a floaty "wow finally a princess" way, but genuinely surprised! We love her no differently to her brothers but if I had £1 for every time someone said "you kept going for a girl" or "thank god you had a girl now or you'd have 4!" And all that bollocks. We got what we got!

It's so frustrating isn't it. I don't know why people feel the need to comment. I love my boys would not change them for the world. Count my blessings daily if we are lucky enough to have any more then I will be happy regardless of sex!

I think it depends on the context. If the background assumption is that girls are better and it's a problem if you have another boy that's such a shit thing to say. I'm a mum of boys and also can't believe how perfectly normal people feel the need to comment, as if I would agree that their random daughter I don't care about is better than my son who I love.

On the other hand, if it was meant just as a light-hearted joke, I think it's fine. A good friend of mine has 6 boys (her own DC + DSC). We've joked that her husband clearly makes boys. In her last pregnancy we joked about there not being any point in her doing a gender reveal or having midwife tell her the sex at her acan. What makes it a silly joke is that there's no implications that having loads of boys is a bad thing! Her last pregnancy was (of course) a boy, and she was obviously delighted with him.

PiggleToes · 15/10/2024 18:53

Presumably it was a joke?

EasternStandard · 15/10/2024 18:53

How could she know that, bizarre

Rosscameasdoody · 15/10/2024 18:52

She’s talking bollocks.

Differentstarts · 15/10/2024 18:50

Yabu to take any notice of the stupid shit that comes out of people's mouths.

My mum had a miscarriage, then me (female) then another miscarriage. She always claims they must have been boys and she can only carry girls. Drives me bonkers! That isn’t how it works…

I think it can be.

My mum had 7 pregnancies, 3 girls and 4 miscarriages that were all boys, the Dr told her she couldn't carry boys.

NewBrightonEel · 15/10/2024 18:46

My first was a boy and I miscarried my second. I lost count of the amount of people who told me it must have been a girl and I must only be able to carry boys. I've had four daughters since.

Why did she say this? Is she somehow qualified in this area?

Just say is she daft? You carry what your dh provided. Nowt to do with you at all really!! Less to do with her!

Lemonadeand · 15/10/2024 18:42

There is a slightly higher chance of your third being the same sex if you have two of the same sex already, but only tiny.

ahemfem · 15/10/2024 18:42

TheBirdintheCave · 15/10/2024 18:41

Eugh I hate that. I miscarried three babies after my son and was told by my friend: 'Maybe they were all girls and you just can't carry a girl?' 🤦🏻‍♀️🙄

People can be really thoughtless.

Uklady23 · 15/10/2024 18:41

Your messages have all made me laugh! I did have a laugh at it at first but have you ever had a comment that just got under your skin.

I'm glad I shared with you lot as you have all made me feel much better about what I know is a ridiculous comment.

I think I am feeling extra sensitive as I have had a few comments recently about the whole gender thing. The usual are you going to keep trying for a girl which is just so frustrating but that's another story!

OP posts:
InTheRainOnATrain · 15/10/2024 18:40

Is that even possible? I’ve heard of rare genetic disorders meaning a woman will have early miscarriages if it’s a male fetus but I thought firstly that it’s incredibly rare and secondly that it was to do with the Y chromosome so it couldn’t work the other way around so you could have boys but not girls She sounds a bit dim tbh.

Imjustlikeyou · 15/10/2024 18:39

I have 2 sisters, all of us have 3 kids
2 boys and then a girl!

Cappuccinowithonesugarplease · 15/10/2024 18:37

What a dumb thing to say.
Is she a SMOG by any chance?

MereDintofPandiculation · 15/10/2024 18:37

I believe that statistically your third child is likely to be the same as your first two Why?Are you referring to the research that suggested that male chromosomes like a different environment from female chromosomes, so that time of impregnation/ woman's diet both have an effect? so that, eg "A study from 2010 showed that women who ate a diet of low sodium and potassium and high in calcium and magnesium, in conjunction with having intercourse 3-4 days before ovulation increased the chance of having a girl"

I'm not sure whether that finding has been verified.

If you're thinking about the basic Y chromosome = boy, no Y chromosome= X, then there's absolutely no reason why you should be more likely to produce another boy after having two boys.
