Pissed off to be told I can only 'carry boys'

AIBU to be pissed off at this. Two boy children absolutely love them and love being a boy mum.

Recently toyed with the idea of a third, but a friend told me that I can't carry girls I can only birth boys.

This really pissed me off and I don't know why.

I would love a girl, but I also would love a boy. It just the way she said it asif there was something wrong with 1. Me or 2. Having boy children.

If she is your friend - are you sure it wasn’t banter?

I wouldn’t be offended if a close friend said it and I happened to have the same sex children - it might be a joke.

If it’s painful for you, why? Or why so on this day?

If it helps my partner has 5 boys and 1 girl in his family. We have a boy, I have a girl from previous. I joked and told him I bet the male gene is strong in your family. There was no science behind it, just some banter.

But if it upset you speak to your friend.

Mama2many73 · 15/10/2024 23:38

I though that i was going to read that you had been for lengthy genetic testing, that geneticist had told you this! (A friends DiL actually had this diagnosis)
Wasn't expecting that your mate was diagnosing you. Sometimes people are just a-holes and open their mouth before engaging the brain.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 15/10/2024 23:30

Biologically if anyone is to 'blame' it's your partner as he might have more Y chromosome sperm than x. You only have x eggs.

BookArt · 15/10/2024 22:39

I feel for you.
I had a miscarriage, got pregnant again and at the 20 week scan found out I was having a boy. A family member, my age, responded saying 'oh your miscarriage must have been a girl, you'll never have a girl.' it ruined a special day finding out the gender as I'd spent the whole pregnancy on edge that I would lose the baby again.

That person is insensitive. Thick as shite as it isn't true,, and should keep their mouth shut. Along with a lot of other reasons I went low contact with the person who said it to me. But their comment really shone a light on how they didn't positively affect my life.

Hope you're okay. If it helps, my second was a girl 😂 so thick shit was completely wrong! Good luck!

There’s no science stating this, is there?
No genetic thing? It’s 50/50 as I know it.

Edited

There's slightly more boys born than girls on average (ignoring the countries where sex selective abortions are a thing and overwhelmingly of female fetuses.)

Had a miscarriage before I had DS, was convinced that would have been a girl, either way it wasn't a viable pregnancy and I now have a delightful little boy, even though I really wanted a girl because I wanted to call her Amy (after Amy Lee.) I did not call my son Lee, but that is one of his middle names. 😊

arinya · 15/10/2024 21:54

Yeah it’s all nonsense. My friend had 4 girls (including twins) and then a boy.

Our DD is the only girl amongst her cousins though. We stopped at one child so I’ll never know if I can only have girls 😆

BestEffort · 15/10/2024 21:48

Sex of the baby is nothing to do with the pregnant woman anyway!! We have XX chromosomes so only have X gametes. men have XY so they have an X and a Y gamete. If the Y sperm gets to the egg it's a boy if it's the X then you have a girl. So she's an idiot for saying you can't carry girls because as everyone is saying what a load of shit but she's a double idiot for thinking it's the woman who determines the sex of the baby.

Totally get the annoyance. Currently pregnant and because my symptoms are different than with my first, multiple people have told me I must be having a boy this time... It's IMMENSELY annoying when people make massive leaps about your body and baby, even if the intent is good and kind!

I'd forgotten about this! People said this when I was having DS2 as my pregnancy was quite different. It was different again with DD (DC3)

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 15/10/2024 21:38

I have 2 DS and then DD. People were falling over themselves when I was pregnant with DD to tell me she'd be a boy (we didn't find out in advance)

That's when they weren't doing a head tilt and saying aw, are you trying for a girl. As if there's much you can do about it even if you do have a preference which I didn't. People are weird about lots of things and then girl/boy thing is definitely one of them!

I voted YABU purely for wasting energy on such a pathetic comment

InsanelyItchy · 15/10/2024 20:46

Oh god this is the kind of thing my MIL would say. Just roll your eyes and ignore.

Bellyblueboy · 15/10/2024 20:45

I couldn’t bear to have such a stupid friend!

MissAmbrosia · 15/10/2024 19:40

My grandma had 2 boys - and then 5 girls. I am not recommending this as a course of action 😂

It must have been fun and games in her house 5 girls. I have 3 and when they strop and are in a mood run.

moomoomeow · 15/10/2024 20:38

You do know it’s the sperm that determines the gender of baby?

Girl sperm swim slower and live longer so (Google how to) plan that with ovulation.

Also, your friend sounds stupid.

LurkingFromTheShadows · 15/10/2024 20:35

I couldn't get so angry about a comment from a clearly very stupid person

StaunchMomma · 15/10/2024 20:32

'Yes, dear. Because no woman in history has ever had 2 brothers'

Gremlins101 · 15/10/2024 20:22

Personally I wouldn't be pissed off because your friend sounds a bit dense. It would go straight over my head.

PrettyPickle · 15/10/2024 20:20

Tell your brain dead pal that its the mans chromosomes that determine the sex of the child and not the womans!

Men have both X and Y chromosomes (XY), while women have two X chromosomes (XX). During conception, the sex of the baby is determined by whether the sperm cell carries an X or a Y chromosome. If the sperm cell carries an X chromosome, the baby will be female (XX). If the sperm cell carries a Y chromosome, the baby will be male (XY).

And just because you haven't had a girl yet, doesn't mean you can't.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 15/10/2024 20:18

It might have made a tad more sense If you had 10 boys and she said “Your DH/DP can’t produce girls. Does she not know it’s the man’s sperm that determines the sex of a baby and not your womb!!
However you’ve only got 2 boys. There’s nothing to say your not going to have 3 more kids which are all girls.

Rewis · 15/10/2024 20:09

It's always if you have 2 of the same sex the third is branded as last desperate attempt to get the opposite sex

WonderingWanda · 15/10/2024 20:03

She has a very poor understanding of biology the sex of a baby has naff all to do with it's mother.

Scorchio84 · 15/10/2024 19:57

Why do people say stupid shit like this? Or the other "You're carrying very low that means you're having a boy/girl" 🙄 Don't mind her & good luck if you go ahead with trying for a third

InterIgnis · 15/10/2024 19:54

Only boys you say?

Pissed off to be told I can only 'carry boys'
