Kid of about 15 months just wandering round Caffè Nero. She's very interested in the hot drinks on low tables. She's approaching other people and playing with their phones. Mum is completely oblivious on her phone. FFS supervise your toddler!

I had children being rowdy next to my table - whilst parent was across the other side of large coffee shop (deep in conversation with friend) - I told them not to be rowdy as id com to have a chat and we couldn't hear ourselves talk.

Children went back to parents table and then parent came over to address me telling children not to be rowdy - along with all 5 of the children, and thats it not my place to be parenting her children and she'd be taking them back with her so they were safe

It was as if she thought I wanted to be parenting her children and don't want her to take them away!

I uttered one word - result and he stomped off

and I carried on with my friend and the conversation in peace

Exactly! It is not my job to supervise a random toddler because mum isn't.

The parent sounds rubbish, but no one is making you supervise this child. Why are you taking that upon yourself? Just get on with what you're doing and ignore the child.

WhatsInTheRug · 15/10/2024 13:25

Not proper supervision is it? You are letting your kid approach people who are having hot drinks and may not want a kid coming over

You don't sit and watch...you put your phone away, get up off your arse and take hold of your child

Get off your phone and go and tell the mother.

Nicely.

Why should she?

She's venting her frustration on a forum not seeking a confrontation

It's just her lack of supervision, that is irritating me. I don't mind toddlers wandering up, if they are being supervised.

But you said she is "new watching her approach other tables" (sic) so they are being supervised.

The ward I work on is next to the children's burns unit. I'm a bit nervous about toddlers around hot drinks.

Then if you don't want to speak to mum speak to a member of staff

Indeed, she is just passively observing the situation ans sharing it on the Internet.

Have you used forums before?

What is their purpose?

WhatsInTheRug · 15/10/2024 13:17

Lots of defensive people on this thread...

What did you hope to achieve from this post?

Very odd indeed

I should imagine she was interested in a chat with people who had experienced similar. Is that really so difficult to fathom?

And?
She should 'actively' be doing otherwise should she?
I rather think that's the parents job.

So? The OP isn't responsible for the toddler.

Same. I definitely prefer toddlers to adults who want to chat 🤣

Too right. Toddlers are far more entertaining 😂

Why shouldn't she be if she hasn't got kids to supervise?

I love it when toddlers wander up for a chat

it doesn't bother me, but years ago, I did actually see a little one trip a waitress over, and of course, the parents, who had been studiously ignoring the poor thing up until then, went batshit crazy at said waitress. It was awful. Kids need to be supervised where there are hot liquids about!

HappierTimesAhead · 15/10/2024 12:54

Theunamedcat · 15/10/2024 12:47

Presumably she doesn't have a toddler that's wandering around begging to be scalded

Indeed, she is just passively observing the situation ans sharing it on the Internet.

SantasRubiksCube · 15/10/2024 12:48

I agree with you OP, all too often there are parents who can't be arsed to supervise their small children properly but are the first ones to make a big fuss/point a finger of blame at someone else when their child gets hurt.
