I know I’m not the only one and don’t think I am being unreasonable tbh but didn’t know where else to post this.

In the past week or so there have been five serious attacks in the UK but what we have plastered all over the news is the police apologising to a deluded xl bully owner, when he’s the one who failed to do as he’s told.
What kind of message does that send?

The other day armed police were called to Stockport because of a dangerous dog and three people were injured. There’s only one little article about it in the Star. When did this ever used to happen in this country? It’s not normal.

I just don’t see why normal, decent people should have to live in fear of these scumbags and their dangerous dogs. Nothing is being done, how can something be banned if there are exemptions?
When the dogs do attack, the owners get months in prison which is the equivalent to a slap on the wrist.

It’s like being in possession of something worse than a loaded gun or a lion. Nobody’s allowed pepper spray though - you can get 4 years in prison just for carrying it apparently.
If they at least increased the jail time maybe that would deter people from owning these dangerous dogs.

@Yalta your posts are so unbelievably stupid it would be funny if it weren't such a scary subject.

Are you really comparing a cat or a cow to an XL bully? A complete powerhouse of muscle and aggression that lives domestically and are subjected to people in public places everyday? Do you genuinely not realise how idiotic that is?

AlexaSetATimer · 14/10/2024 13:36

Celticgold · 13/10/2024 23:20

It’s true it is not the dogs fault it is how the dog is treated by its owner. It’s the owners that don’t give them proper training or abuse them to be aggressive that are at fault not the dog. You can’t tar every dog with the same brush!

But XL bullies are bred to fight. It's in their dna. Look how many can be traced back to "killer kimbo". It's in breeding at its worst.

horseHorseHorse · 14/10/2024 13:34

Also, having grown up in the country and around cattle, I'd take a herd of them over a XL bully any day. Cows are predictable at least.

horseHorseHorse · 14/10/2024 13:33

I was on a large, chunky pony and felt very much in danger. It didn't stop until my pony stopped giving warnings and kicked the dog hard. There is no way any unarmed human could stop an attack.

Years ago my dog was attacked by a pitbull and my dad - who worked as a builder and was very physically strong and tall - could not stop the dog. Being graphic here but the dog didn't stop until he smashed the dog's skull in with a sledgehammer and it died. My dog - a large crossbreed - had such extensive injuries that he lost a leg. And that was a pitbull who was half the size of the monsters today.

My angry designer pets are ginger and white cats

FWIW I have sat in many cafes and walked around many towns, cities and villages and never once felt in fear of dogs attacking

This idea of getting rid of the breed of dog that attacks the most would just result in getting rid of every breed of dog

Because at some point every dog breed would be at the top of the list

Cows kill on average 4-5 people per year

Let’s cull all cows. No more beef or milk or cheddar. But a small price to pay surely for those 4-5 human lives.

What utter drivel

wastingtimeonhere · 14/10/2024 13:05

I'm not a fan of xls, whatsoever, ugly brutes, but I see plenty about out walking my dog, usually unmuzzled. I cross over and go different ways. My dog doesn't like them either and will react. It's obviously a body language thing. Usually, the owners stand out a mile, one that I do know, has done frequent prison sentences for violence. I avoid.
I agree with licensing, compulsory training, insurance, and lead restrictions. I hire a field regularly so she can run off lead.
I spend a small fortune on weekly classes, so my dog is trained in a 'job', purely as enrichment, but she could use the skills if required.( similar to rescue dog/ police dogs) She is a large crossbreed ( no bully breeds!) We adopted her as a puppy, now 6 years old, but we still have classes weekly and I will do until she's too elderly.

A cat is physically incapable of inflicting the same amount of damage as an XL bully. A bully can easily easily kill a person.

You will recognise an XL Bully if you see one. They’re huge and muscly.

I appreciate your polite replies.

Do stories like this not scare you? Loved dogs suddenly killing their owners?

Imagjne what your dog could do to your three year old, even with you in the room? I don’t understand how you are not worried at all?

Woman mauled to death posted video of her dancing with XL bully to song saying 'I don't 'give a f***' about the breed being banned

Another video posted by Nicola Morey, who was named locally as the 23-year-old woman mauled to death by a dog in Ireland on Tuesday, appears to show her pets and is captioned: "But if one of us dies - I hope I die first".

@Yalta Interesting logic.

How many families do you know that selectively breed aggressive killer cows, keep them at home in densely-populated areas and walk them in the park?

superplumb · 14/10/2024 12:49

Love dogs but these are disproportionately vicious. They should be rounded up and put to sleep. No iff and buts. Any dog from the same line also put down. Eventually people will stop breeding them

Haven't read the full thread so not sure if it's been mentioned already but it's XL bullys specifically that have a genetic predisposition to 'switch' and attack without any of the usual warning signs (growling, snapping etc). Very different to most breeds where handler/environmental issues are more likely to fuel violent behaviour. Something to do with a significant majority being bred from the lines of sire Killer Kimbo - info was linked on another thread about dog attacks, I think it was this website bullywatch.link/2023/08/01/finding-kimbo/comment-page-1/

AgathaX · 14/10/2024 11:46

I've been pretty stunned at most of your posts, from believing your XL is a friendly, harmless dope, to actually going out and acquiring one of these horrific dogs when you live with children. You wanted a different breed but the available pups were too far away!? So you bought an XL from a friend of a friend who happened to have puppies? And your research was chatting to a couple of local dog walkers. Beggars belief.

This post though, this one takes the biscuit. Do you really think you'd have time to create a slip lead & use that & pull up? Really?? Do you permantly have a slip lead in your hand? Or would you trot off to find one whilst your dog was attacking? How strong are you? How tall? Do you think you would have the physical strength and height to actually get the slip lead around its neck as it was tearing chunks out of someone or something, to put it round its neck and then to pull up enough to be able to stop the attack?

You wouldn't. You'd be exactly the same as every other dickhead who has one of these dogs that attacks. You'd be helpless.

@ZippyLimeSnake yes you’ve had a lot of responses but think this one through

You are not being realistic about the power of the breed and the fatal harm it can do, and how powerless you would be. Or your dc if you have them

ZippyLimeSnake · 14/10/2024 09:34

& I do completely agree with you! I would never ever trust him nor any dog 100% no matter the breed. My nans dog attacked me when I was a child as I accidentally tripped over her, I think she was a spaniel, my nans had so many dogs I’ve lost count but I think that’s the breed she had at the time. & I fell over her playing in the garden and the dog came & attacked me. My son when he was younger got bitten outside a cafe by someone’s shitzu who apparently had never done that before. 2 random dogs whilst I’ve been out walking mine have tried to attack my dog whilst he was doing his business. So I agree, dogs are animals and they do run on instinct and sometimes they switch. But that can happen with many other breed as well. I follow a charity who tries to save seized dogs and yes before the ban many XLs appeared on their page but another big breed that was constantly on their for biting people usually their owners were Rottweilers yet you don’t see people wanting to mass cull these.

As I said in my previous post, 9/10 when an XL Bully attacks someone it is always stated what they are, yet whenever it is another breed they’re rarely stated.

But the thing is, you don't seem to grasp the fact that the reason you and your son are still alive after being attacked by the spaniel and the shitzu are because they arent anywhere near as powerful as an xl bully.

I can garuntee if your xl bully attacks you or your son you will end up worse off.

Yalta · 14/10/2024 12:38

SlothOnARope · 14/10/2024 11:44

It needs to continue!! It must start with XL Bullies as they commit the most attacks and their owners are the most in denial. Then it has to continue with other dangerous breeds, until all children and non-dangerous breeds are reasonably safe from dangerous dogs in homes and playgrounds and the adult public can walk the streets or sit in a cafe without fear of dog attacks.

Why so resistant to rules that are guaranteed to make the world a safer place? You have no right to curtail other people's freedoms because your angry designer pet hasn't killed anyone yet.

I have an American bulldog who is one of the breeds that make an xl bully. Defra don't recognise him as a true breed in itself, but do recognise cane corso, pit bull, French and UK bulldog. He comes under the "criteria" so has to be muzzled in public. He is a massive idiot. Wants to be friends with any human or animal.

There is literally no point in claiming that your dog is safe and friendly. All the dogs who attack have been considered safe and friendly until they do attack.

Anononony · 14/10/2024 12:33

I'm a dog lover and have a medium-large breed (huskies) but I agree with others, I would never own a breed I couldn't physically overpower (huskies aren't that strong and I could hold all 3 of them back with relative ease as a 9st woman)

We have an XL around here who does seem lovely but is always muzzled and on a flat (not extendable) lead with a high viz vest on, I've said hello to her and she just wanted scritches, but I have to admit I wouldn't say hello to one that wasn't muzzled, thankfully they seem uncommon where we are, I've only met that one and one other.

I've done some reading about the genetics of the XL bullies and there definitely seems to be some problematic lineage, out of interest do you know your dog's pedigree @ZippyLimeSnake ? Did you know about the killer kimbo lines before you got him?

We've got a cane corso locally who seems more iffy (with dogs at least, I've only ever seen it when I'm walking mine so haven't said hello to it) than the muzzled XL

Staffies don't worry me in terms of people attacks, they have more dog aggression but all the ones I've met have been lovely with humans, but they're also quite small dogs (properly bred ones are anyway), albeit strong

He was definitely not cheap 🥲

Why didn't you just wait to get the breed you wanted?

ethelredonagoodday · 14/10/2024 12:26

I do like dogs, but I would happily see agressive and dangerous breeds be put to sleep. I also agree with other posters who say that there should be stricter rules around dog ownership and some sort of licencing process.

I also think that too many people have dogs who have very little idea on how to actually look after and train a dog.

Trimalata · 14/10/2024 12:25

Unlike lots of other large breed dogs, bullies were specifically bred at the genetic level to fight, tenaciously, without* *inhibition- pit bulls will actually get themselves extremely harmed when attacking and still not stop, and without prior warning.
Yes, of course not all pit bulls will attack, but you're still introducing a massive risk into your home, and into everyone else's life, that is completely and utterly unnecessary. Of course people will judge accordingly.

SlothOnARope · 14/10/2024 12:25

Tapthisscreen · 14/10/2024 12:19

You’ll never win here @ZippyLimeSnake no matter how you answer the onslaught of questions you’ll be wrong.
I’ve got an American bulldog cross who I’ve exempted. Got a DM on here once telling me to kill myself, which was nice.

No one would have a problem with owners having this breed of dog if the risk was to the owners only, but it's that it puts others at risk that is the problem. If zippylimesnake and others want to have these dogs knowing the awful damage they can do, fair enough if the dog was to only ever attack them, but it's often others who have to pay the price, some of them children.

HidingHereForTomorrow · 14/10/2024 12:24

I haven’t read the whole thread so it may have already been mentioned, but over half of the XL Bullies in the UK are descended from a sire in the US named Kimbo, now dubbed ‘Killer Kimbo’ because of the atrocious personalities of his progeny. Kimbo has a very high coefficient of inbreeding (~32%) and the results of his matings have had awful consequences. Have a search about it, it’s awful. Also if you do own an XL Bully, I’d suggest tracking its heritage to see if Killer Kimbo lies within it.. sometimes it is just the dog.
