I know I’m not the only one and don’t think I am being unreasonable tbh but didn’t know where else to post this.

In the past week or so there have been five serious attacks in the UK but what we have plastered all over the news is the police apologising to a deluded xl bully owner, when he’s the one who failed to do as he’s told.
What kind of message does that send?

The other day armed police were called to Stockport because of a dangerous dog and three people were injured. There’s only one little article about it in the Star. When did this ever used to happen in this country? It’s not normal.

I just don’t see why normal, decent people should have to live in fear of these scumbags and their dangerous dogs. Nothing is being done, how can something be banned if there are exemptions?
When the dogs do attack, the owners get months in prison which is the equivalent to a slap on the wrist.

It’s like being in possession of something worse than a loaded gun or a lion. Nobody’s allowed pepper spray though - you can get 4 years in prison just for carrying it apparently.
If they at least increased the jail time maybe that would deter people from owning these dangerous dogs.

They don't care. There was one case last year I think where one such stupid owner was posting all over social media about how she "didn't give a shit if people think he's aggressive". A few weeks later it mauled her to death.

She was a case of natural selection at its most adept and brutal. Thank goodness it was the owner and not another blameless person who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I just can’t understand the mentality of someone who has one of these dogs. Why do they value the life of (for example) their next door neighbours child or the poor guy that was attacked in a high street so little?

Either completely thick or psychopathic tendencies.

I thought you had to have them neutered to keep them. Surely there will come a point when they die out. Anyone with an XL in 15 years will have been obviously breeding illegally.
you should only be able to sell a dog if you have a licence to do so. You should only rescue a dog from a proper rescue shelter. You should have to pay a significant sum of money for a licence. Dogs should be on leads on pavements and built up areas.
Dog ownership in this country is crazy.

ChangedmyMindNotUsingMyRealName · 15/10/2024 11:07

I'm scared of Rottweilers too. I've had a few bad encounters with those

SlothOnARope · 15/10/2024 10:54

Also true, as lots of them live in crime ridden shitholes where house invasions are a weekly occurrence. But you don't need an XL Bully to deter housebreakers, other breeds will do the job. So the Bully owners tend to be the "my dog could do your dog any day" mentality, without thinking of the consequences.

Yeah, I think if I ever get a house, if I'm alone I would buy a German Shepherd if I wanted a dog to feel safer

I believe the type of person to own one would be someone who, other than types who are violent, are scared and feel the dog will protect them and their house

@YOYOK , I agree , I read somewhere that a police marksman , said it took multiple shots to pts an XL bully .

XL bully owners are always either thick criminals or thick wet blankets (unfortunately nearly always women) who think not liking a dog breed is akin to racism - if they weren't slobbering over Killer Kalashnikov III they'd be writing to death row inmates.

Sorry I am reading so many messages I’m losing track of what I have and haven’t said.

I would use the method I have been taught to get an attacking dog off, which is to create a slip lead & use that & to pull up & not back. As pulling a dog back away from an attack actually baits them more. Yanking & pulling, throwing water ect over a dog will only make the dog react more in an aggressive manor, again this is why you teach a dog to drop anything on your command, granted if they are in that frenzied mode it probably won’t work hence the slip lead technique.

I would be curious as to who taught you that method and if they said it would work for big and strong breeds. I could overpower a 20lb dog that way. An XL bully? Not a chance!

You cannot overpower XL bullies. I have read about how many trained professionals it takes to subdue them. Usually they’re so far gone, they need shooting multiple times.

Hopefully you didn’t mean that you think you can overpower an XL and I read it wrongly.

YOYOK · 15/10/2024 09:11

Mischance · 15/10/2024 09:03

I do not leave my children alone with my dog & that isn’t because he’s an XL that’s because I wouldn’t leave them alone in a room with any dog full stop.

What a way to live! - why, just why? Get rid of the blasted thing and let your children live a peaceful relaxed life.

Of course these dreadful dogs can be killed - there is no other way to keep people safe. It is about survival.

I wouldn’t even want to be in a home with a supervised XL bully. Despite what the owners may think, they absolutely cannot overpower them. That’s why the police shoot them. Honestly, I wouldn’t want to be within a mile of an XL with an owner who thinks they’re trained to counteract an attack. It’s foolish and dangerous.

I would allow my young children to visit friends who had a cockerpoodledoodlechichon type thing in the next room. I would never allow my young children in a home with an XL bully.

On the whole though we're more likely to be attacked by a person

But that's a risk you take. You can't live your life avoiding people!! You can eliminate risks by not having this type of animal in your household.

ChangedmyMindNotUsingMyRealName · 15/10/2024 09:08

Sorry, but for you to even OWN an XL bully whilst you have children is extremely irresponsible. You say you wouldn't leave your kids with any dog alone, which says you fear for their safety. So why then would you even consider having an XL in your house, even with yourself in the room?
Can't you see that doesn't make sense?

You will NOT be able to save your kids from the ferocious jaws of one of those dogs, even if there's a number of adults in the room with you desperately trying to pull the dog off if it attacks.
You might as well liken your reasoning to saying you'd be prepared to allow your kids to swim in shark infested waters amongst adults.
Do you think the adults could protect the kids from the shark?
Or do you think the shark would win?
It's a no brainer really.

I'd fancy my chances against a shark better tbh. Those dogs are demented.

Ear cropping is thankfully illegal in the UK so if you are in Britain it won’t have been done by a vet, but by the idiot breeder or owner.
I agree with pps, XL bullies are responsible for a disproportionate number of fatal attacks, and as a breed they do seem to have an innate predisposition towards random and unpredictable attacks. I saw news footage of an XL bully attacking a man, and the body language of the dog was startling. The dog was happy and clearly enjoying itself rather than reacting defensively or protectively. It was how some breeds of dog might behave with a small prey animal, rather than how a dog is when fighting or highly defensive. Horrifying.

Yes it was in England the ears were uneven and looked like they had been hacked with blunt shears honestly I felt sympathy but this dog was FUCKING HUGE (no clue of the breed) myself and the staff were watching in horror as they described the dog as the (almost) 2 year old best friend I expected to read about them in the papers within a month (thankfully not)

I totally agree with you. I wouldn’t leave any children around any dog no matter the size or breed. As everything you have said is true, any dog can turn regardless of the training, I do not leave my children alone with my dog & that isn’t because he’s an XL that’s because I wouldn’t leave them alone in a room with any dog full stop. I am just commenting on my own dog that he is very well trained & isn’t just some mindless monster running around as I think this is the assumption most people have on XLs.

Lomoto · 14/10/2024 22:03

I love dogs and have them but probably won't have more. There are too many and even I as an owner feel uncomfortable with the sheer number of dogs being kept. I realise I am part of the problem.
XL bullies are dangerous, it doesn't matter how soft the dog appears they can switch very quickly. The link to the article about the lineage is heartbreaking and honestly traumatising. Sadly I would support even tougher action being taken.

SantasRubiksCube · 14/10/2024 21:23

The irony is, that despite the majority of people being against these dogs, we actually WANT the owners to be right, that your precious fur baby of a killing machine 'would never hurt anyone'. People getting arsey and defending the breed, I hope your all proven right that these dogs aren't going to hurt or kill anyone unfortunately I won't be surprised when I hear of yet another attack by a XL bully

abracadabra1980 · 14/10/2024 20:54

This is such a contentious subject, however, as a dog owner of many different breeds over many decades and with welfare experience, I would say this:

My Newfoundland can SMELL water and legs it to the source as ITS IN HER DNA. She is also a stubborn pig when she gets a scent. ITS IN HER DNA.
My Newfoundland will be extremely concerned if I cry, or make a strange sound. ITS IN HER DNA.

My Golden Retriever, was a big soft melt, but he was destructive of tea towels because retrieving and being sweet IS IN HIS DNA.

My Cocker spaniel was pts as he was a resource guarder who bit anyone who came near him for a million different reasons (when I was a teenager) with no warning or predictability. RESOURCE GUARDING is a common problem in some badly bred spaniels.

My Pugs x 3 we're all the sweetest dogs around people but as a companion dog, ITS IN THEIR DNA. They are notoriously greedy again, it's in their DNA.

My Labrador is the sweetest most biddable puppy I have had yet and highly intelligent/can remember a command after only a few mentions. She likes to fetch and retrieve, again IT's IN HER DNA. She is extremely greedy, again, IN HER DNA. She loves water, again, in her DNA.

My foster LGD (Kangal x rough collie from Greece) was an escape artist who as a puppy could scale a 10ft fence, and wanted to live outside - as a LGD, IT IS IN HIS DNA.

Every single breed has traits. Unfortunately for XL bullies, their DNA involves a fighting/aggressive genetic. Yes, there will be some who are soft as clarts, it once they become status symbols in the wrong hands, they are a lethal weapon.
For this reason along with their size, they are simply not safe in the hands of anybody who can't control them in public. It should be illegal for children to be responsible for them and also every owner should have to pass a test on canine behaviour and breed traits. Furthermore, the inland revenue need to get their arses into gear and investigate every person advertising litters of puppies online. These people are making millions in cash, tax free, with no care who they sell their pups to and no fear of prosecution.

@JazzyJelly You're probably right, but they are very intelligent and obedient dogs

Absolutely, I adore my GSD, have had them all my life and wouldn't have another breed, but I respect that they're strong and willful (according to the breed standard!).

Bred to shout and make things go away though, rather than fight to the death like pitbulls. Every German Shepherd I've had would bark madly if someone knocked on the door, but if I open the door, they're a new best friend.

Machiavellian · 14/10/2024 18:27

Turkey is mass culling. People are weirdly sentimental about animals. If the owner is responsible and able to train and keep the animals and people safe, all good. If animals are dangerous, poorly trained or unsuitable for homing then they should be culled. How many thousands of dogs are stuck in shelters? I cannot understand how animal lives are exalted to the point that people are arguing about saving them. Farm animals are sentiment. Dogs are sentiment. Animals are sentiment. But if they pose a threat to humans, they don't come first. Farm animals are sentiment and deserving of compassion. Dogs that are allowed to attack, or are trained, or neglected or not safe around people need dealing with. Don't even get me started on ignorant people who let their dogs scare livestock and cause them to miscarry out of shock.
