I know I’m not the only one and don’t think I am being unreasonable tbh but didn’t know where else to post this.

In the past week or so there have been five serious attacks in the UK but what we have plastered all over the news is the police apologising to a deluded xl bully owner, when he’s the one who failed to do as he’s told.
What kind of message does that send?

The other day armed police were called to Stockport because of a dangerous dog and three people were injured. There’s only one little article about it in the Star. When did this ever used to happen in this country? It’s not normal.

I just don’t see why normal, decent people should have to live in fear of these scumbags and their dangerous dogs. Nothing is being done, how can something be banned if there are exemptions?
When the dogs do attack, the owners get months in prison which is the equivalent to a slap on the wrist.

It’s like being in possession of something worse than a loaded gun or a lion. Nobody’s allowed pepper spray though - you can get 4 years in prison just for carrying it apparently.
If they at least increased the jail time maybe that would deter people from owning these dangerous dogs.

Please don’t come at me for what I am about to say.. But in a lot of cases it is the owner not the breed, I have an XL Bully and honestly he is the biggest dope and all he wants is for you or anyone to just love him. Yes they’re powerful and sadly for them they did eventually become a status dog and fall into the wrong hands. Unfortunately the media also only like to ever tell you when an XL bully has attacked where as other dog attacks the breed is nearly always never stated another thing I have come to notice is that not always if the breed correct when they state it’s been an XL bully, there have been occasions where it’s actually a mix breed. It is sad the dogs and us owners have gotten a bad rep as a lot of us and our dogs are really not bad. None of us wanted our dogs to become banned and put under the dangerous dog act as a lot of our dogs are not dangerous and to be entirely honest banning a breed doesn’t sort out the issue as another dog will eventually become a status dog. Cane Corso have been extremely popular since the XL ban. What does need to happen is some form of license for people to own any breed of dog as they all pose a risk an XL isn’t the only dog to ever of killed someone and they won’t be last.

I am not being biased as I totally agree these dogs are strong and yes can totally be dangerous with the wrong owners but getting completely rid of one breed will not stop another taking its place.

How many owners murdered by these dogs said the same thing about their own precious mutt? Don't be naive, you're playing with fire. They're atrocious animals and it is a disgrace that the government has allowed exemptions!

MusicLife80 · 14/10/2024 07:08

I had an incredibly frightening incident when I had taken 5 children to the park regarding an XL. The owner had it off its lead. We were in a fenced playground. I was petrified as I thought what if it jumps the fence, it was also kind of ‘stalking’ the fence too. The owner was on her phone and oblivious. I called my husband who told be to just wait until they’ve passed and then leave the park. He started driving towards the park to help.

Petrifying.

daffodilandtulip · 14/10/2024 07:02

"It's the owner..." yes, but you could give a poodle to a bad owner and it's less likely to go on the rampage killing children in the street.

I was actually thinking when I was out over the weekend, that the whole XL thing had gone quiet. I was assuming it was because they don't walk them in the winter. I'm sad to think it's still going on, but without media coverage nothing will change.

Superhansrantowindsor · 14/10/2024 06:50

Why do dog owners accept that certain breeds are bred for retrieval or chasing rats etc but can’t accept that the natural instinct in an xl bully is bred for aggression. It’s the bred characteristic. I would like a mass cull and the return of dog licence for all dogs. Compulsory insurance too.

hopsalong · 13/10/2024 23:59

Agree with all of those who want a mass cull.

When I was a child we had a big well-built Staffie. (God knows why, really.) They are in theory quite different from XL bullies but our soppy dog also had a tendency to flip and lose its temper with other dogs, though not people thankfully. I hated taking it for a walk as a teenager because there was always a slight chance it would attack, and, even if it didn't, its appearance unnerved people. Was sadly very relieved when it died at 8 or 9.

FionnulaTheCooler · 13/10/2024 17:55

Was it not muzzled? I thought they had to be muzzled in public places. Some owners really are beyond stupid, if your dog harasses a horse of course its going to get a kick.

I was walking my two dogs yesterday, when to my absolute horror I saw an XLB running through the wood heading straight to my dogs. The owner was frantically shouting and I literally could not move or speak. I just thought, my dogs are going to die now. I then realised it was muzzled but it was loose and going after my dogs (spaniels) who were screaming in fear. She had an off- lead boxer type which thankfully seemed ok. She kept apologising and got it back on the lead but I was absolutely terrified and went home totally shaken.

MarmiteMakesMeHappy · 13/10/2024 23:42

I hate to agree, but you are right.

About 80% of the XL Bullies I encounter (West London) are being paraded on heavy chain leads as potential weapons, by would-be (and genuine) young gang types.

The other 20% fall into the 'big softie' category and are invariably being walked by kids/women would would have zero chance of brining them under control if they went for someone.

The fact of the matter is that as well as the attack/kill instinct - they are bigger and stronger than their owners, and their jaws lock - fact. I don't think ANY dog that can out-power their owner is wise. Cane Corsos are fucking massive and so are some breeds of mastif. I would include them in my 'unsuitable pets' list.

Aprilsund · 13/10/2024 23:28

I hate them. Was a story on the news about the police accidently putting one down recently, didn't feel sorry for the owner at all.

I often see one on my walk home from work and it always pulls on the lead to get to me, really terrifying. No muzzle

We have a dog problem in this country.

We take the piss out of the US with their ‘right to bear arms’ but were no better with our destructive dogs.

They kill children FFS.

I said this on aibu once about knived and got ripped a new one but l agree 100%

It’s true it is not the dogs fault it is how the dog is treated by its owner. It’s the owners that don’t give them proper training or abuse them to be aggressive that are at fault not the dog. You can’t tar every dog with the same brush!

It's inbreeding- they are bred of fighting stock.

It IS the dog with these XL pit bull types.

They flip without warning.

I don't think it is.

About 6 years ago my sister got one as a puppy, it was a lovely pup and she is a really good dog owner.

One day it just went for her son, they weren't even on the same couch. She has no idea what happened.

Luckily it was only 12 months old so she managed to get him off very quickly but she said he just switched and his eyes went like saucers.

He was PTS

XL Bullies are known to ''flip'' completely without warning.

Most in UK are massively inbred, and related to ''Killer Kimbo''

Read about the tragic death of Mia Derouen. aged 4.

the XL Bully was so say ''so sweet with her''...til it flipped and slaughtered her.

It broke down the door to get to her.

You are not being unreasonable by any stretch of the imagination.
These are vile creatures. I do hope that at some point they vanish for good.

Theunamedcat · 13/10/2024 23:10

Honestly I do blame dog owners to a certain degree in the last few days I've been aggressively challenged for moving my child away from there "daft and harmless" dog as soon as he started the dig growls at me my son is autistic and unpredictable around dogs ffs
Seen a dog with badly cropped swollen ears very grumpy the owner was allowing his toddler to poke it....
Seen someone letting their child walk a very large grumpy dog around 😒

When I was at secondary school, my mate's mum had a shop and took her breeding bitches there as they whelped.

Non pregnant bitch, no pups in her care. Bitch chomped on a primary aged school girl. A lot of damage, hospital, so on...

Go on - tell me the breed? You'll be surprised.
And I can't be arsed with the guessing games - so here is the breed that ended up being destroyed because of an attack...

A shih tzu.

Yep.

A shih tzu.

Theres a genetic traint in poorly bred Shih Tzus where they become pschotic. It's like cocker rage - and well known by many with experience of them. I have the 2 inch bone deep scar on my forearm to prove it too.

It's why they fell out of favour with breeders in the late 00s.

PennyCrayon1 · 13/10/2024 22:59

Social Services will (rightly) intervene where children are living with a dangerous/abusive man.

Why don’t they intervene where children are living with these dogs?

I met three last week we were dog walking in a quiet area and came on them unleashed. One flew to attack and the owner jumped on it. We kept walking with the dog on quick release lead in case they attacked.

I always carry a whistle now when I walk. As a whistle will blow a dog's concentration and it will stop the prey drive. I was poised to use it.

I have to say I was walking with a friend who had no experience of dogs. But the body language of the dogs meant that things could have deteriorated quickly.

I was in the vets a bit later on and they wanted a report

A whistle will do naff all to a bully breed. They dont have a prey drive. They have a kill drive. And they'll be more inclined to jump at you with the whistle.

I genuinely don't understand this thinking. I do agree we need tougher restrictions on dog ownership etc. but men harm much more people (women, men and children) than dogs of any breed do. Do we put all men down?

Oh for goodness sake. Zzzzz

I can’t stand dogs of any kind, terrified of them, I cross the road rather than walk past one.
I’m far more scared of a Doberman or a Rottweiler than an XL bully (which if I’m honest I wouldn’t recognise)
I don’t want them to disappear though, I’d rather they were all on leads and not in shops but I recognise that it is my problem and that a lot of people feel the same way about my cat.

Edit to add: not that I take my cat shopping but you get the general point

Edited

You're taking the piss right? A Rotty or Doberman are no longer bred to be psychos in this country and haven't been for a long time. They're also both incredibly intelligent and command led dogs.

XL bullies are thick as their own 💩 volatile and incredibly easily triggered.

To the point that if you have one, most people now assume the owners are the same (I dont care who you are reading this, if you have one, you're a walking neon sign for the local chav brigade - and probably have a crushed velvet couch).

My family had two dogs in the 1970s and they had to have a licence. Just did a quick google and they were abolished in 1987 as they were thought to be unnecessary. Difficulty policing may have been a part of that but I'm not old enough to have first hand knowledge.

For me we should have laws like they do in Canada, where dogs can only be off lead in public in specialist enclosed areas. I was actually able to go for a run without a dog trying to jump up at me - heaven.

Gosh that sounds fabulous, the Canada thing. Just this evening I moved my toddler son away from an off lead large dog (not XL bully but IMO still capable of doing damage) and the owner told me I was stupid and started bitching about me to another dog walker nearby! I didn't respond. Why can't they go to dog fields, instead of being 6 foot from the gate of a playground. No attempt to call dog away either.

4 attacks in 48 hours in South Yorkshire recently. Apparently all forces are seeing huge rises in call outs to very regular dog attacks.
All different breeds . . .

Something must be done. It's time for licenses and dog owners collectively cover all the costs of administening the scheme via a dog ownership tax. Just like cars must be insured and taxed.

I genuinely don't understand people who think that's a remotely rational comparison.

The comparison is the amount of people seriously harmed/killed by men compared to the amount of people harmed/killed by dogs.
