I kid you not. It’s German in origin I think. Like Lottie. Childhood nickname that stuck. I like it, it suits her.

Do they not know what it means?

GCAcademic · 13/10/2024 09:05

Does she identify as a Welsh man?

Mirrrors · 13/10/2024 09:02

I think it’s ok, seems to have got a bunch of people extremely riled up though! If you and your child like it ignore the silly wee billies on here.

Mojodojocasahous · 13/10/2024 09:02

Get her to google lolo Ferrari 😂

charlotte12321 · 13/10/2024 09:01

My name is Charlotte and I would cringe head to toe if someone called me lolo.

Everyone calls me Charl. I absolutely hate Char Envy

StaySpicy · 13/10/2024 09:01

SophiaJ8 · 13/10/2024 06:30

All I hear is Lolo Ferrari

I came here for this comment! My first thought too.

I could get next to Lolo (lowlow) but Loll Loll is overegging the diminutive too far.

My friend Caroline is known as C.

My DS is known as O.

Both given as NN by their friends.

I'm Pud. I was a fat baby and when my best friend heard my mum call me it that was that.

NN are organic.

I think Loh-Loh is the sound I actually meant.

Tottie!!! You are kidding ?

I know a Charlotte who goes by Cat, and another who goes by Tottie. Both as cute I think, but if you and she like Lolo, then just go for it.
I think it's ok for a parent to give their child nicknames, I have a few different ones for my daughter and these are picked up by her school friends.
I suppose the thing is, that nicknames are usually organic and so you might find that it's not easy thing to naturally call her something different if it's not muscle memory

Tottie!!! You are kidding ?

OneBadKitty · 13/10/2024 08:57

So her friend calls her Lol-oh ?

WingsofRain · 13/10/2024 08:56

It’s fine if you are talking about a dog, twee and sickly if it’s a human.

OneBadKitty · 13/10/2024 08:55

If she wants her friends to call her a shortened version of her name she should just start referring to herself as that and use it in written form as well- sign of her messages, cards with it etc. write in on her work, on her school books, diary, etc. and it will probably become normal to use it the rather than formally announcing that it's what she wants to be called.

UKAddendum · 13/10/2024 08:55

I have a Charlotte, she chooses to go by Lottie, but is known at home as Lottie Loo, shortened to Loo. LoLo might stick, but in the end, she'll choose herself. Avoid Char!

lol lol is harder to say than charlotte and doesn't trip off the tongue so that's probabaly why it's not stuck.

Char, Charl, Charlie, Lottie etc. are more natural derivaties.

GiddyRobin · 13/10/2024 08:50

PearlFawn · 13/10/2024 08:44

No sorry I might have been misleading her best friend doesn't make the L sound at the end

So Loh-Loh? That's...that's not going to catch on. Her friend is either taking the piss or just being silly.

Just let the girl's mates choose her nickname if it's so important! Choosing one like this is contrived and your daughter will have the shit metaphorically ripped out of her.

Any nicknames or diminutives I've had over the years (quite rare Spanish name) have been chosen by friends. Choosing your own is just cringey.

ShiteRider · 13/10/2024 08:49

Lolo as in Lowlow is a bit daft for Charlotte

Lolo as in Lotlot without Ts is ridiculous. I can’t even think how you would comfortably say this without even taking into account that it’s nothing to do with Charlotte and I can’t think how it would be spelled.

Wishimaywishimight · 13/10/2024 08:44

So 'Lolo' is pronounced Lollol'? I think OP is having a LOL.

Your daughter will be laughed at if she tries to implement the name 'Lollol" - pure daft.

PearlFawn · 13/10/2024 08:44

LaMarschallin · 13/10/2024 08:43

So, should someone calling Charlotte by her nice, new nickname make an "L" sound at the end or not?

I meant more like the starting of lollipop twice

Also, I have to say that I think Gen Z choosing their own NN is far better than the dreadful insistence by many English people to shorten a long name whether or not the person whose name it is actually wants it shortened. I know several people who insisted on the long form of their name once they went to University or started work because they hated the nickname they had foisted on them at school.

Yes!

I have a lovely name. It has an unlovely but very common abbreviation. I absolutely hate being called by the abbreviated version.

A) That's not my name.

B) I didn't say you could call me that, I always introduce myself by the full name.

I do correct people every time. It gets a bit tiring though.

Stop being so presumptuous.

I did have a few NN in secondary school, I didn't love them, I tolerated them because I understood people's need to use them.

Driedonion · 13/10/2024 08:42

Nooooo!
Reminds me of Lolo Ferrari of Eurotrash back in the 90s!

PearlFawn · 13/10/2024 08:41

LaMarschallin · 13/10/2024 08:37

Well, "Lolo" doesn't have an L at the end so it's odd to pronounce it "Lol Lol".
I think most people would pronounce it "Low low".
"Lol Lol" seems like someone saying the acronym for "laughing out loud" twice.
If Charlotte/Lolo has told her bestie that she wants a nickname, maybe the bestie hasn't thought "Yup! We Gen Zs change our names all the time as we operate under different rules for names". Maybe she just decided to make a bit of a joke.

Eta Of course, maybe she was just trying to helpfully come up with a shortened form of Charlotte.
Still doesn't explain why "Lolo" should sound like "Lol Lol".

Edited

So Lolo is a daft nickname to try to choose (and people keep thinking it's Iolo prounounced Yolo because you keep dropping the capitalisation, OP), but if you / your DD are insistent on choosing it, then please do realise that Lolo is gotting to be pronounced as low-low, or possibly lo-lo (like the start of lollipop twice).

If she wants a nickname that sounds like lol-lol, you're going to need more Ls in the spelling of the nickname. But that would be the least of her problems, as she'd be the butt of jokes. Is her best friend already taking the piss out of her and she's not realised?

She loves lo-lo (like the start of lollipop twice). Her best friend is a really nice girl so I don't think she'd be taking the piss out of her?
