to be disappointed in this newborn present?

Friends of ours had their 1st baby a couple of months ago around the same time we had our 3rd baby.

Because it was their first child, I put great effort in buying them an amazing gift. I spent well over 100 pounds and put gifts in the box for the baby as well as the new mom and dad (think of nice tea, hot chocolate and soap and glory stuff for her)

I didn't expect them to reciprocate this, I know not everyone has the money available to spend so much time on a gift.

However, when they came over, she gave
me a bag from Shein. When I opened it it had the most disgusting plastic polyester smell. It contained a pink towel and a pink body suit for my baby girl that were made out of really cheap polyester material.

It smelled so bad that I threw it away after they had left.

My sister is due to have her 3rd child at the end of November. She already has a lot, but I bought her some nice socks, body suits and trousers for the baby from Asda (George). The stuff is really lovely and was inexpensive.

So I know that nice baby clothes don't have to cost a lot at all.

AIBU to be a bit disappointed that they made 0 effort when choosing their present?

Shein stuff belongs in the bin.

Pandasnacks · 12/10/2024 20:38

They may be willing to put it on their baby though - clearly people do or it wouldn't be for sale, so they may have just chosen something they could afford that they thought was pretty. The smell would go after washing. I'm not suggesting you should put your baby in it but I am suggesting you are an ungrateful snob.

It is rather sad to pollute more by throwing the stuff away, but I think it is unfair to dress the children from less fortunate families with clothes that may contain harmful chemicals like lead that was found in some children’s jackets.

I agree with you - this is also the reason why I didn't donate it

Just be grateful it didn’t have a scorpion in the bag 🤪
can’t believe no one else said this yet!

Aren't you a delight? You just chucked it in the bin, adding to landfill, when it could have gone to a charity shop, where someone might have found it quite delightful. You sound grabby, snobby and unpleasant. You don't give to receive for a start. Also did you ask the new mum if she actually liked Soap & Glory products? She might have been horrified.

CurbsideProphet · 12/10/2024 20:36

I hate Soap and Glory products and think it's over perfumed and chemically. I also found quite a few people bought me clothes I absolutely wouldn't choose for myself. What you're really saying is you have better taste than your friend.
I also hate Shein, but some people order tons from there. They likely panic ordered it online in the middle of the night and forgot to check it because they were busy with their newborn. Really, does it matter?

It's hard to comment without sounding like a massive snob but this happened to us too and it went straight in the bin. I genuinely didn't think it was baby safe. The smell/texture of the material was ghastly and I suspect highly flammable. Not breathable at all. Obviously we thanked them and were grateful they got a gift! The sentiment was there.

angellinaballerina7 · 12/10/2024 20:35

How many baby gifts have they given you over the years? If you got one for your first and second, you’re entirely unreasonable.

I can completely understand if people say that I should be grateful and that it is the thought that counts.

But some people seem to lack reading comprehension. I think I made it perfectly clear in my post that I didn't expect an expensive present at all.

I chose to spend over 100 £ and of course I didn't expect them to spend so much on my baby.

Just not some bad-smelling polyester stuff from SHEIN. I would never put this on a baby.

Oh give over OP. You wouldn’t have banged on about how you spent ‘well over a hundred pounds’ if you weren’t bothered by the monetary value. You just wouldn’t have mentioned it at all.

Our reading comprehension is fine thanks. It’s your self-honesty that’s lacking.

Chromey · 12/10/2024 20:33

I also don't think supermarket drinks and smellies are a brilliant gift OP. For £100 you could have got some nice Molton Brown not just masses of cheap stuff.

Mumwithbaggage · 12/10/2024 20:33

I'd have wanted YSL Touche Eclat and a big bottle of gin.

GoldenNuggets08 · 12/10/2024 20:33

YABU. It's not a zero effort present though. She went online, searched through some outfits, bought an outfit she thought looked nice, waited for it to be delivered and then gave it to you. There's plenty of thought put into that. I've bought baby clothes from Shein in the past and they have been really nice.

Wife2b · 12/10/2024 20:33

You’re not being unreasonable at all, the quality of Shein stuff is awful, I wouldn’t buy it for myself much less buy it as a gift someone else. There isn’t any excuse really, supermarket stuff is really reasonable and usually of good quality.

Scutterbug · 12/10/2024 20:32

Awful to throw it away. You could have washed it and given it to your local baby bank.

BarbaraHoward · 12/10/2024 20:32

Sometimes people get gifts wrong. I guarantee you've given a gift in the past that has made the recipient think wtf.

They picked something for your baby and gave you a gift. That was lovely of them.

You didn't like physical gift (I wouldn't either), but they still did a lovely thing.

You're judging new parents who've just had a bomb taken to their lives and they still found the time to get you a gift. They probably thought it looked lovely online and then credited you with more generosity than you're showing.

Waffle19 · 12/10/2024 20:32

YABVU! You don’t give gifts to get gifts. It was your choice to spend that sort of money. She’s a new mum, and yet she still thought to send you a gift.

Mumwithbaggage · 12/10/2024 20:31

Your present to them wouldn't be my cup of tea. Soap and Glory is what my 14yo dcs loved years ago. I have tea I choose. Hot chocolate?? Why?? Bit generic and suggests you just bought stuff rather than being personal and specific. Just as you didn't like what they got you. Such is life - move on! Presents are a minefield. Think you need to get over yourself.

Chromey · 12/10/2024 20:31

Honestly I wouldn't expect anything for a third baby - maybe a congratulations card but not a gift. I think it's only for first babies isn't it?

You are a delight. Taking a disgusting quality Shein outfit to a charity shop so someone can put this on their baby?? Are you insane?

GiantHornets · 12/10/2024 20:27

I wouldn’t have welcomed your gift either - nice tea, hot chocolate, soap & glory? All unnecessary when I have tea and soap already.
Too much consumerism and present exchanging going on

ThePerkyDuck · 12/10/2024 20:27

AutumnCrow · 12/10/2024 19:53

Maybe it was something they were given themselves and wanted shot of.

I wouldn't have binned it though - we have in our town a baby bank, food bank, community cupboard, for example. I know Shein is crap in all sorts of ways, though, so I wouldn't blame you for feeling a bit disappointed that they might have thought you'd like or appreciate it. Being honest, I know that I wouldn't.

I think it’s good that OP got rid of the Shein stuff, considering an article I’ve read not too long ago about an investigation where they found traces of lead in children’s jacket.

Weverunoutofteabags · 12/10/2024 20:26

"I didn't expect them to reciprocate this, I know not everyone has the money available to spend so much time on a gift".

Why are you complaining then? Surely you should be grateful they got you something. Do you know their exact earnings/outgoings? By that I don't mean what they've told you, I mean have you seen payslips? If not you have no idea their truthful situation. Maybe they tried to do something nice with what they had available and you've thrown their gift in the bin.

5128gap · 12/10/2024 20:26

I'm shocked she handed you the gift in the plastic zip loc bag shein stuff comes in. Can't imagine anyone doing that.
