to be disappointed in this newborn present?

Friends of ours had their 1st baby a couple of months ago around the same time we had our 3rd baby.

Because it was their first child, I put great effort in buying them an amazing gift. I spent well over 100 pounds and put gifts in the box for the baby as well as the new mom and dad (think of nice tea, hot chocolate and soap and glory stuff for her)

I didn't expect them to reciprocate this, I know not everyone has the money available to spend so much time on a gift.

However, when they came over, she gave
me a bag from Shein. When I opened it it had the most disgusting plastic polyester smell. It contained a pink towel and a pink body suit for my baby girl that were made out of really cheap polyester material.

It smelled so bad that I threw it away after they had left.

My sister is due to have her 3rd child at the end of November. She already has a lot, but I bought her some nice socks, body suits and trousers for the baby from Asda (George). The stuff is really lovely and was inexpensive.

So I know that nice baby clothes don't have to cost a lot at all.

AIBU to be a bit disappointed that they made 0 effort when choosing their present?

Shein stuff is potentially dangerous. Baby clothes from there should go into the bin.

Not ever having bought anything from Shien, I would not know. Are they inflammable or something? If not, then some people don't have the choice of liking things - better on someone's baby that has nothing new, than in the bin, say I.

Abstractthinking · 13/10/2024 20:51

Oh fuck! I never got any of my friends or family presents for their babies. Luckily they still speak to me years later.

TheRestIsEntertainment · 13/10/2024 20:43

I would never buy from Shein and wouldn't put my baby in it. I thought everyone knew by now it was awful.

I can't believe people saying they wouldn't buy anything for a 3rd baby Shock

You could have given it to a charity. Many people cannot even afford the prices in charity shops, or Georget etc. and would be grateful for something new for their baby. Don't be so snobby.

Yanbu, I'd never gift someone something from Shein. Also hate the mentality of not gifting for a third baby or gifting less. I gift to the child not the parents and wouldn't deprive them from a thoughtful gift the same as their siblings just because they are the youngest. I'd of likely just washed it to be honest though so at least it had got some use and not been a total waste.

aylis · 13/10/2024 20:14

If you don't give to receive then why are you disappointed.

I can’t believe anyone thinks you’re being unreasonable. Shein is disgusting - awful for the environment and sweat shop site.

I’d rather get nothing than add to the landfill with that crap!

That I agree with, that Shein sweats. But perhaps you are happy to drive an electric car despite the child (slave) labour used in the Democratic Republic of Congo to mine cobalt? I won't have an electric car, they are monstrously bad for the environment long term (and short -term bad for kids in the DRC).

petathedragon · 13/10/2024 19:58

Why have you started a thread on this?

Urgh

user2848502016 · 13/10/2024 19:57

Get over it, with a first baby maybe getting out and buying a gift was just too much and ordering something from SHEIN was all she could manage?
It's the thought that counts, also surely you could have washed the items and donated them if you weren't going to use them? Very wasteful to throw them out.

Yes someone got us some baby clothes on shein. I'm not fussy, I will happily use hand me downs, most other shops. I save all my clothes for another mother, but the shein stuff went in the bin. I tried to wash it and see but the material was so horrible. My husband put it on our baby one night and it was making him sweat horribly. I took it straight off and into the bin. They got us two big lots of it. I felt terrible, absolutely lovely people who gave it to us but couldn't use it or pass it on.

You could have given it to a charity. Many people cannot even afford the prices in charity shops, or Georget etc. and would be grateful for something new for their baby. Don't be so snobby.

Grammarnut · 13/10/2024 19:48

You don't know they did not take trouble, you just didn't like the gift - though throwing it away was a bit extreme; you must have money to burn. You probably embarrassed her with such a large gift as you gave, too. Never have I either given or received such a large present between friends for any occasion. You sound snobbish and as if you only give to receive and weigh gifts by what they cost, not why they were given. You don't sound a very nice person, I'm afraid.
NB What you give your sister is miles away from what you might expect from a friend - bit cheap, going to George though (in your apparent terms)!

Jack80 · 13/10/2024 19:19

I would have kept it, washed it, took a photo in it and the said it got stained. I certainly wouldn't have binned it but that's your choice.

I can completely understand if people say that I should be grateful and that it is the thought that counts.

But some people seem to lack reading comprehension. I think I made it perfectly clear in my post that I didn't expect an expensive present at all.

I chose to spend over 100 £ and of course I didn't expect them to spend so much on my baby.

Just not some bad-smelling polyester stuff from SHEIN. I would never put this on a baby.

You wouldn't but many will, I see many people in my day job. Who can not even afford charity shop items so when Shein give huge discounts they are happy to have something new for their child. You and a good few others on here sound like snobs to be honest. And why would you throw it away Surly there is a baby bank or homeless charity close by who would have taken it

SapphireSeptember · 12/10/2024 22:39

She said about George at ASDA having nice stuff that's not expensive! Which can be ordered online, along with TU from Sainsbury's. F&F from Tesco can't be ordered online, much to my disgust.

Tesco is going to start selling clothing on its website again, according to the business section of the Times.

Bugbabe1970 · 13/10/2024 18:05

I think your gift was over the top

Mumoftwochildrenand6furkids · 13/10/2024 17:57

Whilst I agree that is an crap company to buy stuff from, its their first baby lots of cost and not much time to spend looking for gifts to be honest you spent far to much and you cant expect to buy exspenive gifts for other just for them to spend as much money on you. Id just say thanks and then what you do with it is up to you.

I'd genuinely rather have an outfit from Shein than soap and glory stuff 😂

At least you can regift S&G. It isn’t fair to pass Shein tat on.

GoldenNuggets08 · 13/10/2024 15:09

Same 😅 soap & glory stuff and teabags would be completely useless to me. But I'd still be grateful, say thanks and appreciate the effort. I certainly wouldn't be bothered making a thread complaining someone got me a present that wasn't to my taste 🙈

Bearbookagainandagain · 13/10/2024 14:31

I don't think it's a money issue, it's down to taste. Most of the clothes we got for our little girl were absolute pink shit.

EatSleepSleepRepeat · 13/10/2024 14:04

I think she made an effort n as much as she browsed ajd placed an order and it arived on time to give it to you.

But anyone buying from shein has low standards because as you say, they are a shit company for many reasons, so you're fighting a losing battle.

Basically I wouldn't expect a nice gift from anyone that shops at shein. And I'm not snobby, I'm more than happy with charity shop gifts or no gifts at all. I literally hate shein.

Ilovelurchers · 13/10/2024 13:50

My post on here has clearly been reported and hidden - I am not angry about this but I genuinely want to understand what I did wrong so I don't make the same mistake again.

I did say that I didn't think Shein stuff was harmful to babies after it had been washed, but I also said that was only to my knowledge, and I was happy to be corrected if wrong...... So I made it clear I wasn't trying to pass my opinion off as concrete fact.

If the person (people?) who reported me wouldn't mind telling me why I would honestly be grateful. I feel a bit upset actually, and worried I have done something awful without realising it.

I only really posted because I know a lot of people have very little money and use Shein for their kids out of expediency, and I didn't want those people to feel judged - I often think that scruples like ethical shopping are ones that sadly only the better off can easily afford to have. If you need to clothe your family, you need to clothe them. (I use charity shops myself but not everyone has access to them, depending where they live and what hours they work).

Have asked HQ for clarification too. Again, I am genuinely sorry to whoever I offended.

Grabyourpassportandmyhand · 13/10/2024 10:12

And of course posters think you should wash and dry it and donate it to charity. Throw it out and be done with it. It’s a shit gift and a now MN wants to make it a burden you are ecologically responsible for

Exactly this. Throw it into the bin and try to forget about it.
