To feel let down by Sandi Toksvig's Bake Off Comments?

Sandi has given a few interviews saying her brain was atrophying on Bake Off and she had to leave for her own sanity. I know she's a comedian so her words are partly for effect - but it's so disrespectful to the people who love the show.

Richard Osman tweeted "I honestly don't think you should present shows you wouldn't watch" and I think that's right. She's really gone down in my estimation.

It would have shown more integrity to not take the huge pay cheque in the first place rather than phone it in for 3 years and then rubbish the show that's been paying your mortgage for you.

For the record, it's quite possible to be a very intelligent and well educated person and still be interested in cake - or at least, in other people, which is what that role is really about.

I've gone right off her!

It does seem like the kind of thing that is best left unsaid. But on the whole, the scripted comedy segments of GBBO are by far its weakest element, so it makes sense that it might have been as underwhelming to present them as it sometimes has been watching them.

Some of the hosts have been better than others, and from what I've seen, she wasn't one of best.

It gets worse though - She also runs a 'Women's Equality Party' that doesn't stand up for Lesbians or Women. In fact Sandi ignores their cries for help completely - fingers in ears - and has a cosy chat with her dear friend (male) who likes to scare teenage girls by undressing in the ladies loos.

ah just seen you “work in telly so know what i’m talking about” 😆

and you read how she said she adores prue and they are forever more joined et the hip?

Firenzeflower · 11/10/2024 19:48

I'm not a fan of Bake off but I think she came off as churlish and unpleasant. I feel very differently about her now.

ItsOhSoTiresome · 11/10/2024 19:38

ST is about as funny as arse ache so she shouldn’t have been presenting it in the first place.

She’s dull and boring.

I don't think there's much point in pretending that the GBBO is anything other than a TV programme made for profit, Sure, it's also a much-loved national/international institution, but it's also just a show, not staffed by angels floating about on clouds. They're just TV presenters doing a job.

I remember the blog by Danni/Danny/Dani, the A and E medic who made it to the final in a series from ages ago, which was nice, but also deeply realistic about her experience of being in it. She said something like 'Everyone was nice, but you also never forgot that they were making a product, and the product wasn't you.'

ahhh this sounds interesting, where could I read this please?

ThePinkBiscuit · 11/10/2024 19:34

‘Bake Off is a wonderful programme which has already proved it can happily withstand a change of hosting personnel.
‘The reason for that, of course, is that the true stars of the show are the bakers themselves. I wish everyone well.’

Josette77 · 11/10/2024 19:33

Miriam is amazing. I love her. She will always be a rockstar to me.

I'm sure she's devastated.

😂😂😂😂

That wasn’t what the article I read said - the one I read said she didn’t even like cake and couldn’t see the point of the show. Not in a lighthearted way at all

I do not give a toss about ST and GBBO.

However, she dropped WAY down in my estimation when she started talking nonsense about gender politics and getting on a soapbox claiming that Transwomen are Women.

This. I used to like her but now I have an aversion to her. I can't bear smart asses and she comes off as being sarcastic rather than intellectual now.

youheard · 11/10/2024 19:30

ThePinkBiscuit · 11/10/2024 19:07

did you actually read the article?!

she was saying that it was painful to spend hours watching others eat cake that she wasn’t permitted to try!

It was sort of a jokey “it was tortuous!” interview

Well it make me love Richard Osman even more him saying that 😍someone who takes the pay check and then slates the show needs taking down a peg or two

she didn’t slate the shoe
she said that she didn’t enjoy watching other eat cake for hours on end!

SpiggingBelgium · 11/10/2024 19:21

I work in telly and know what I'm talking about.

A Saturday job in Currys doesn’t count.

No, love

DisabledDemon · 11/10/2024 19:23

I wouldn't give ST enough thought to feel let down. She just doesn't impinge on my life.

ThePinkBiscuit · 11/10/2024 19:21

Given that she also said in a Times interview that she couldn’t understand why anyone would bake a cake when you could just buy one,

hear hear!

SidewaysOtter · 11/10/2024 19:20

Given that she also said in a Times interview that she couldn’t understand why anyone would bake a cake when you could just buy one, and that she believes men can be women, I’d say Ms Toksvig’s brain atrophied some time ago. Especially the part that is able to understand any experience or point of view other than her own.

MissAmbrosia · 11/10/2024 19:17

I loved that show where she went on weekends to lovely places with different women and I was so disappointed when she took Eddie Izzard and was positively simpering over him.

SpiggingBelgium · 11/10/2024 19:16

Let’s face, Sandi Toksvig could cure cancer and certain factions on here would knock her, because she committed the ultimate MN sin of being pro-trans.

AlertCat · 11/10/2024 19:14

I don’t think she’s got much integrity, to be honest. She’s very self centred and is all about what affects her, rather than what might affect others.

SpiggingBelgium · 11/10/2024 19:14

Prescottdanni123 · 11/10/2024 17:44

@SpiggingBelgium but herjob was to interact with the contestants. We're they atrophied her brain too?

And at what point did she NOT do that? As someone else pointed out, she cried more than once when certain contestants left. She must have had some level of investment for that to happen.

Finding some of the behind the scenes process dull and frustrating doesn’t mean she was somehow being mean to the contestants.
