Husband farting is giving me the ick

What can I do / say to stop my husband farting so much. He claims he can’t help it but I can hear he forces them out and they stink. I’ve said it isn’t fair for me to breathe in that air, said it gives me the ick, asked politely, asked sharply, asked so many times for it to stop and it does maybe for an hour or two but then he will fart again when we go to bed for example and it makes me shudder.

I love him so much but it makes me not want to cuddle or kiss him let alone anything else!!!

Any advice??? 😷

or whilst you’re directly next to someone is nasty and unnecessary

But this is what the OP is talking about! Not him farting in an entirely different room or whilst they're asleep. She's close enough to smell them and they stink- after a while, I would find that a massive turn off too. If every time I got close to my partner he was letting out gross smells it is a turn off

SwingTheMonkey · 10/10/2024 12:02

There’s a time and a place for farting. At the table, in bed (whilst awake) or whilst you’re directly next to someone is nasty and unnecessary. But I wouldn’t want to live in a house where I couldn’t fart wherever I wanted (above places excepted) and wouldn’t expect anyone I live with to either.
I’m amused by those who think that farting in earshot of your partner shows a lack of respect. I have a deep respect for my husband which is precisely why I don’t expect him to hold a fart in just because I’m in the vicinity. Same in return. And if hearing your spouse fart could turn you off of having sex with them, perhaps you weren’t that attracted to them in the first place?

Personally I'd hate to live in a home where I couldn't fart. I'd find this conversation incredibly controlling.

Would you tolerate a man saying this to a woman (farter)?

The issue is not "you arent allowed to fart, ever" - it's "could you respect me enough to go in another room so I dont have to smell it". IF you are farting uncontrollably, and constantly then that should warrant seeking medical advice.

The same way we dont tend to take a crap in front of someone else because it's generally not nice for the other person.

Siriusmuggle · 10/10/2024 11:58

We’re married to the same man. It’s not just the smell, it’s the noise and the performance of it all. And the stupid facial expressions that go with.

Katemax82 · 10/10/2024 11:57

Eat 15 dried apricots or better, drink 1ltr of apple juice then have a bowel explosion right in his face then walk away laughing

’Gosh it must be so horrible for your colleagues, having you fart all the time in the office. Has anyone said anything?’

’No because I don’t fart in the off… Oh’

’So you can hold it in in a situation where you feel you need to respect the other people in the room and their right to not be faced with that kind of antisocial behaviour. Right.’

Well, so is forcing out farts.

Think you’ve missed a joke there.

The pp was joking

Sepoctnov · 10/10/2024 11:44

Farting in public is a choice.

He's not in public he's at home though. Personally for me I get terrible wind and occasionally have to fart in public otherwise it feels my guts will explode. I always check that I'm not too close to anyone though!

I can see how you are grossed out OP and I would be asking him to try to move away from you to fart. In the grand scheme of things though I would let this one blow over😉

Paganpentacle · 10/10/2024 11:43

Right.
And you don't create gas as a by product of digestion then?

Wolfpa · 10/10/2024 11:43

Can he change his diet? If you need to fart there is not much you can do to stop it but if he is farting so much there may be an issue with what he is putting into his body

Ace56 · 10/10/2024 11:41

Cattyisbatty · 10/10/2024 10:43

No he wouldn’t, but keeping it in is really uncomfortable.

Then he needs to go to the bathroom/a different room and not constantly do it in OP’s face.

Margaretschlege · 10/10/2024 11:41

Actually crying at Europe and the husband who woke himself up

Shade17 · 10/10/2024 11:40

Always a source of amusement in our house, especially the volume of some the dog produces, can sometimes hear him from another floor. Deliberately forcing them out is unreasonable though.

Growlybear83 · 10/10/2024 11:35

@DecafGreen Not really. I find I fart much more immediately after a meal, and would find it hard to get out of my chair and out of the room before my wind erupts. I don't often need to fart in a meeting, but the fact that I can control my sphincter to the extent of not releasing a real eye watering rip snorter in public doesn't mean that I can hold it in for long enough to enable me to leave the room. I've always tried not to fart loudly in public but I must admit that on more than one occasion I've dropped a real belter when I've been in Sainsburys with my husband and turned to him and told him off loudly for farting in public 😆😆

"He certainly wouldn't do it in front of a woman whose opinion mattered to him."

Well said. This is the key point OP needs to ponder.

Exactly. He can’t be bothered to make an effort.

There need to be some consequences that make him change his attitude.

That's a bit over the top. Those underwear are horrible.

Growlybear83 · 10/10/2024 10:52

Maybe there's something abnormal with my body, but if I need to fart, I don't have enough warning to get up and leave the room before letting rip. I could usually manage to let one out quietly if I was in a meeting or a waiting room, but quite honestly, I expect to be able to fart when and where I need to in my own home. I'm afraid that I also find a good loud fart - whoever produces it - quite funny.

If you've got enough sphincter control to restrict the volume of a fart in a meeting, then surely you can keep it contained until you step outside the room.

Although, I have to say, you are very bold to let one go in a meeting...not many people could be confident that it wouldn't trumpet out at top volume.

letmego24 · 10/10/2024 11:00

Mm OP sounds familiar ???

user8889932902 · 10/10/2024 10:57

Either - he's doing it on purpose because he's one of those stupid men who thinks its hilarious

Or, he has a medical issue that needs to be sorted/ an appalling diet. If its this he would be well advised to seek medical help as being constantly gassy and emitting foul smelling gas is a sign of poor bowel health which could lead to more serious issues down the line.

I will never understand why people think farting is hilarious. Do those people also invite others in to the toilet after they've had a shit to have a good sniff of it?- after all, it's so "funny" right?

Gross.

Wouldhavebeenproficient · 10/10/2024 10:54

Same. I told my husband that I just really couldn't be sexually attracted to someone who farted around me, and it put me off sex with him. Weirdly that seemed to help.

Cattery · 10/10/2024 10:53

CherryogDog · 10/10/2024 08:49

My DP farts loads, the smell makes me heave. His diet is terrible and he drinks a lot, but won't do anything to change it.
He once farted in the car, and I had to hang my head out of the window retching, while he was laughing hysterically.
Another time he farted in bed, and woke himself up with the smell, and then moaned "what is that stink ffs" .
If I say anything he just says I fart too. Yes, correct. In the toilet, or another room.

Sorry. I’m laughing 🤣

Branleuse · 10/10/2024 10:52

Try getting lactose free milk and cheese for a while. See if that helps.
I also find it gross.
We all get wind sometimes and cant be helped, but if someone has it all the time, its likely a food intolerance and lots of people don't realise it.
