Husband farting is giving me the ick

Marriedtoafarter · 10/10/2024 08:04

What can I do / say to stop my husband farting so much. He claims he can’t help it but I can hear he forces them out and they stink. I’ve said it isn’t fair for me to breathe in that air, said it gives me the ick, asked politely, asked sharply, asked so many times for it to stop and it does maybe for an hour or two but then he will fart again when we go to bed for example and it makes me shudder.

I love him so much but it makes me not want to cuddle or kiss him let alone anything else!!!

Any advice??? 😷

Never? That's so weird. I can't imagine being with someone so uptight.

Eh? How is it weird? If you don’t fart you’re uptight? 😂😂😂😂. Heard it all now !

Having standards, self-respect and couth is not being "uptight."

I've never in my life heard a lover or any other male in my life do this. Nor they, me.

Not being unreasonable. It’s vile. Honestly of course we all fart but in 30 years my husband has never farted in front of me! I’d like to say the same but sadly can’t 😂

Check his diet.

This. My husband was similar but has cut out dairy and has made so much difference. Secondly, does he wolf his food down? I feel like the more work done in the mouth, the less is needed in the gut. My sympathy as I know how revolting this is!!

lifebyfaith · 10/10/2024 14:19

An ex boyfriend was like this. I hadn't been with him long and found it horrible especially as my previous partners didn't do it in front of me and I never do in front of others. This ex just found it funny. He even laughed when I explained that I wanted some mystery and spark in a relationship and that I didn't like the deliberate farting and burping. He wasn't laughing when I ended the relationship as I had the ick so badly I couldn't come back from it.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 10/10/2024 14:02

I agree you can definitely tell when someone is forcing them out.

It’s disgusting. Maybe he should check his diet as the smell is so bad, but I bet he doesn’t fart constantly around his boss.

It is not embarrassing for a lot of people, which is my point. Farting in public is seen as normal in Britain (and, I am guessing, in the US seeing how many slapsticks comedies include burping and farting jokes). Somehow, I went through 25 years of living in continental Europe never smelling any of my family members' farts or experiencing it on public transport. Yet, in the UK, I am routinely subjected to smelling someone's arse fumes.
Also my postgraduate knowledge of anatomy and physiology informs my opinion that a person with normal sphincter control can very much hold their farts for a few minutes until they are able to go to the toilet and release them there. Circumstances under which it is not possible may include severe digestive issues where the person is at high risk of pooping their pants as well as farting unexpectedly. Even then, there is usually a time delay between them feeling like they need to go and actually going.
If you can give me a scientifically-sound reason for why my comment is untrue, I will happily reconsider.

You have me in fits of giggles

Oh FGS. Another thread where the OP posts the first post and then doesn't come back. 🙄

The tone reminds me of the recent nappy thread ....

Attelina · 10/10/2024 12:59

He wouldn't so that anywhere near a pretty young girl at work.

I've been married many years and maybe heard my husband fart once and he's never heard me fart as both of us would leave the room.

Our diets and digestive systems are very good and speaking for myself farting is not a regular occurrence.

Yes of course! It's disrespectful for anyone to treat anyone else like this. Nobody is saying you must live in a home where you can't fart, they are saying go into another room and shut the door first.

Yes I agree and sympathise with OP being grossed out and she should absolutely ask him to fart elsewhere, ideally out of smelling range.

My comment about being controlling was on the suggested convo tips by another PP. But also I don't agree that farting in the home and office are comparable really.

Personally I'd hate to live in a home where I couldn't fart. I'd find this conversation incredibly controlling.

Would you tolerate a man saying this to a woman (farter)?

MrsSlocombesCat · 10/10/2024 12:37

I have always farted a lot and found the first few months of a relationship difficult because if I hold it in I get really uncomfortable. To those saying go the toilet it's not that simple, because when you get to the toilet it's gone back up and you can't do it. I'm lucky in that despite my excessive wind and IBS they rarely smell, possibly because I am vegetarian. One of the reasons I have stayed single for a long time is because I can't face going through all that again!

Fairslice · 10/10/2024 12:36

I would hate this. It's absolutely base. I've been with dh for 30 years and he's farted in front of me really rarely. He has a healthy diet and drinks a lot of water.

watertable · 10/10/2024 12:34

As per usual some ridiculous replies.

Apparently, if you dont want to deeply inhale your partner's smelly farts daily it means you dont love them, I presume that also applies to them burping in your face - you should relish that and consider it something beautiful or else you are "controlling". 😂

CurlewKate · 10/10/2024 12:20

Those of you who think farting is a perfectly acceptable public activity-do you teach your children the same?

Obviously an accidental fart is often extremely funny. And there are obviously couples who don't mind. But if one of the couple doesn't like it, surely holding it in for 30 seconds isn't too much to ask?

Yes I would. Anyone who thinks it is appropriate to fart in a space shared by others deserves to be told it's not appropriate. I can come up with plenty of examples where it is perfectly acceptable to tell someone they are being inappropriate and not being considered controlling. Like a recent thread where husband was watching porn and masturbating while his young daughter was asleep next to him. Would you call his partner controlling for asking him not to do it? I hope not.
Every house has a toilet, go and fart there. Nobody is asking you to never fart but be a dear and not do it when I am standing next to you.

BobbyBiscuits · 10/10/2024 12:18

He should be able to have a window of opportunity to get to the toilet or at least stick his arse out an open door or window? It sounds like he must have a bad diet and gut health as I don't think very frequent smelly farting is normal.
I don't know if they work but you can get OTC wind tablets. Maybe a probiotic drink or yoghurt might help.
It is not nice and he does have some control over it. I don't fart in public, and if I feel windy at home I go immediately to the toilet, arse first away from anyone's nose. If possible!

Zahariel · 10/10/2024 12:14

everybody farts. The deadly smell is diet. Too much meat and animal products, not enough vegetables.

Oh come on. It’s clear what she’s said - he’s not farting normally like we all do and having a normal amount of respect about it. He’s acting like a repulsive dickhead. I fart. My DH farts. It’s fine. We also don’t make the house constantly stink to the point it upsets the other one.

teapotsarebetter · 10/10/2024 12:06

or whilst you’re directly next to someone is nasty and unnecessary

But this is what the OP is talking about! Not him farting in an entirely different room or whilst they're asleep. She's close enough to smell them and they stink- after a while, I would find that a massive turn off too. If every time I got close to my partner he was letting out gross smells it is a turn off

Yes. I’m aware, thanks. I was agreeing with that part.

My DP farts loads, the smell makes me heave. His diet is terrible and he drinks a lot, but won't do anything to change it.
He once farted in the car, and I had to hang my head out of the window retching, while he was laughing hysterically.
Another time he farted in bed, and woke himself up with the smell, and then moaned "what is that stink ffs" .
If I say anything he just says I fart too. Yes, correct. In the toilet, or another room.

How do you stay with him? Or call him "dear/darling Partner"

Just the thought of it makes me so happy I am single

CharlotteLucas3 · 10/10/2024 12:09

I had terrible gas when I was eating gluten. I didn't really think much of it until I went gluten free and the gas stopped.

Yunula · 10/10/2024 12:08

If you are investigating dietary causes I just want to say please don't ever cut out gluten without first being tested for celiac. It's a simple blood test in the first instance.

Some people get awful symptoms and some none at all but if you're celiac you should never be consuming a single crumb of gluten ever again. If he removes it without testing he won't have a diagnosis and if he ever wants to pursue one will need to put gluten back into his diet for six weeks. This can be very difficult after removing it.

@Catza finding farts funny is not a uniquely British trait - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_P%C3%A9tomane
