Husband farting is giving me the ick

What can I do / say to stop my husband farting so much. He claims he can’t help it but I can hear he forces them out and they stink. I’ve said it isn’t fair for me to breathe in that air, said it gives me the ick, asked politely, asked sharply, asked so many times for it to stop and it does maybe for an hour or two but then he will fart again when we go to bed for example and it makes me shudder.

I love him so much but it makes me not want to cuddle or kiss him let alone anything else!!!

Any advice??? 😷

Of course he can't help it. There will be a reason why he produces so much wind. Look at his diet.

No. Loads of people can't help it. Excessive wind is uncomfortable, nobody would choose it.

HotSource · 11/10/2024 17:00

My ex used to deliberately fart close to me.

He ate a diet designed to produce awful stinking farts (just because he sneered at any suggestion of healthy eating etc) and would then make a point of farting to make things unpleasant for me. While pretending it was a huge joke of course)

Funnily enough, when we had separated but were still living in the same house and he started dating there was a sudden interest in healthier eating and indigestion tablets and home remedies and charcoal biscuits aimed at reducing stinking farts.

To those who find it controlling and uptight to complain, If you haven't experienced passive aggressive (or just downright aggressive) farting, you don't know what you're on about!

A friend of mine's husband had, over time, developed really stinky farts. Combined with his snoring and the revolting farts she moved into the spare room.

One night, a couple of years ago, he complained of feeling quite unwell and asked to go to the hospital.

It seems the really stinky, disgusting farts were indicative of a major obstruction in his intestines which were about to explode! He was whisked into surgery that night and was intensive care for 2 weeks. He now has a permanent stoma bag as he had to have so much removed.

As others have said, if the smell is new - get him checked out.

If it's not and he's just being a disgusting person, then YANBU to avoid him at all costs.

I don't mind a fart joke every so often. Occasionally they do pop out and it's usually very funny when they do (DH and I were crying laughing the other day when he innocently bent down to pick something up and the most enormous fart popped out - the surprised "ooh" gave away that it very much was unexpected), but deliberately letting out ones that you know are going to be stinky is vile.

Candystore22 · 11/10/2024 16:21

He needs to check his diet

CoastalCalm · 11/10/2024 16:16

Mine doesn’t do it in front of me , the odd time he has done it when I’m out the room he blames the dog but he usually goes to one of the toilets to let it out thankfully

My DP farts loads, the smell makes me heave. His diet is terrible and he drinks a lot, but won't do anything to change it.
He once farted in the car, and I had to hang my head out of the window retching, while he was laughing hysterically.
Another time he farted in bed, and woke himself up with the smell, and then moaned "what is that stink ffs" .
If I say anything he just says I fart too. Yes, correct. In the toilet, or another room.

So how can you put up with it?

If you haven't got a spare bedroom I would suggest two separate houses

That's sooo disrespectful and nasty

Does he do it to his boss?

I think most people prefer to feel a tad more comfortable in their own home than they do in their workplace…

I guess we don't find it "uncomfortable" to limit our flatulence to private areas. Just as we prefer to urinate, defecate and perform other acts alone.

The "let it all hang out" school of thought might work for some, but I (and many other people) prefer to maintain a bit of mystery and privacy with SOs, and expect the same from them.

MrsWallers · 11/10/2024 15:51

Just come back from a cycle with the husband, arse in the air farting while cycling, when we are walking he farts and others are in ear shot (so embarrasing) he has just come down the stairs farting mutiple times very loudly and is laughing at this thread. My older sons (21) farts can be heard reverberating through his bedroom floor and the kitchen ceiling. Husband is off to cut the hedge along the pavement where we live so he's actually a good egg! He says that his farts are loud but that my lady farts are deadly!

Why wouldn't one give one's family/housemates the same courtesy as one gives colleagues in the workplace?

With exceptions for medical conditions, there is zero way I would be attracted to someone so boorish, uncouth and crass as the OP's husband. It reeks (no pun intended) of total contempt for his partner.

SunnySideUK77 · 11/10/2024 15:10

It’s his diet. I fart like that when I drink protein shakes. You end up forcing them out as the wind is uncomfortable and Unfortauntely it stinks.
He can help it by changing his diet x

Sepoctnov · 10/10/2024 12:54

Yes I agree and sympathise with OP being grossed out and she should absolutely ask him to fart elsewhere, ideally out of smelling range.

My comment about being controlling was on the suggested convo tips by another PP. But also I don't agree that farting in the home and office are comparable really.

Shadylady52 · 11/10/2024 15:09

Make him sleep on spare room if you have 1. If not couch

Ohthatsabitshit · 11/10/2024 15:01

Stand up and turn the telly off at the wall or the lights off, or something equally maddening.

The13thFairy · 11/10/2024 15:01

Perhaps OP could buy him a tiny plastic container, in which he could keep a bit of his most recent poo. He could keep this about his person, and in company, he could take it out, open it and invite the assembled people to inhale the stink. A bit like passing the snuff box. What's not to like?

MellowMallow · 11/10/2024 14:55

@OhMyGodAChicken

Surely they are eating the same things ? I think it's the beer fermenting in his gut causing this .

OhMyGodAChicken · 11/10/2024 14:54

BabyR · 10/10/2024 08:09

Check his diet.

OP shouldn't have to check his diet - she's not his mother or his doctor. If he has any respect for OP (which, frankly, it sounds like he doesn't) he should sort the problem himself.

teapotsarebetter · 11/10/2024 14:48

Pooping and urinating are also natural bodily functions, I dont wish to be standing right next to someone when they are doing it though.......

Ozanj · 11/10/2024 14:48

Catza · 10/10/2024 08:37

Do you imply he has no sphincter control? He can't control gas production but every adult (and child from about the age of 2) can hold a fart until they get to the toilet. Farting in public is a choice.

Not everyone. I don’t have control of my farts which is fine when they don’t usually stink. When they do I really struggle.

Russiandollsaresofullofthemselves · 11/10/2024 14:44

ffs! it’s a natural bodily function. I’m guessing you don’t fart and if you do they smell like roses?

PattiSmithsPattis · 11/10/2024 14:43

@Marriedtoafarter are you my sister in law 🤔

Skyflymom · 11/10/2024 14:35

BabyR · 10/10/2024 08:09

Check his diet.

This!
It’s not normal to fart so much. Look into his dietary habits! Has he ever been checked for lactose intolerance? My son is lactose intolerant but sometimes just decides to eat what he likes annyway and deal with the consequences (which is extreme smelly farts amongst other things!)

Sozzler · 11/10/2024 14:28

I have crohn's disease and fart a lot. They are loud but don't often smell. I can't help it. If I hold them in (which I obviously have to do in public but spend a lot of time going to the loo), I get awful stomache cramps. I hate seeing posts like this because it makes me wonder what my partner secretly thinks and I become very self-conscious about my health condition.
Some people are more gassy than others, some have food intolerances they are unaware of, some have IBS and some have IBD. Holding in gas can be very uncomfortable and painful for some people and if we can't let it out in our own homes, where can we?

Emmz1510 · 11/10/2024 14:27

Someone who produces that much smelly wind either has an illness or a dreadful diet. Everyone farts of course but it shouldn’t be that often or that foul if the diet is healthy.
He needs to rethink his lifestyle and/or see a doctor.

Abbyant · 11/10/2024 14:27

I found that if my dp had milk he stank and couldn’t stop farting and when I told him he couldn’t have milk for a week because I think that’s why he farts so much he agreed to try it and sure enough after a couple days he wasn’t as gaseous or smelly so he limits his intact of milk now.
