To think sometimes people use words without fully understanding them?

There were a few examples in my previous AIBU thread. Including, but not limited to:

Genocide
Antisemitism
Zionism
Ethnic Cleansing

These are strong trigger words for many people, myself included, but I think they are often misused and/or misunderstood.

Thoughts?

this is such a sneaky thread about a thread. Should be taken down.

SimpleThings101 · 11/10/2024 14:09

ect instead of etc

that’s another one where a knowledge of Latin would help! 🙄
because etc is short for ‘et cetera’’
meaning ‘and the rest’.

There's when there are is needed. It's everywhere.

I blame Levi's ads of the early 80s when I first noticed this:

There's rivets and there's Levi's rivets.

The utter utter bastards.

I know, it’s an abomination that ignoramuses have this power over the dictionary, but I’m afraid it’s true.

😮. What!! Crazy I tell ya!

Have you got examples?

Well take the current hurricane Milton

someone might say
“the situation in Florida was exasperated by the storm surge.”

when they should say

“the situation in Florida was exacerbated by the storm surge.”

Acsa · 10/10/2024 21:14

I had a colleague who did everything "vicariously" without a clue what it meant. The most common one was "don't mind me while I vicariously dig into this <whatever food she had>".
She also overdid it exercising vicariously at the gym, and so on... 😂

DinosaurMunch · 10/10/2024 21:10

Ignorant when they mean rude

BagettesCheesey · 10/10/2024 21:07

Can you be a bit more pacific?

DinosaurMunch · 10/10/2024 21:06

Disinterested when they mean uninterested
Incredibly when they mean very
Empathy when they mean sympathy

Great word btw, keeping that for a special occasion.

Sorry for causing you such a pericombobulation.

I think actually she is correct.
In recent times literally has literally and officially acquired an additional meaning of (b) very or extremely but not actually literally.
it has become like inflammable.

Say what?

"The new teacher really exasperated the situation in the classroom," I mean they probably were exasperated, but they had exacerbated the situation.

I can't speak for them, but I find I get exasparated when people exacerbate an easily solved problem. 😎

I hear a lot of exasperated when people mean exacerbated. Drives me nuts. 🙃

If a country wants to feel safe, they HAVE to treat their neighbours better

But Israel were. They withdrew from Gaza in 2005, I think it was. Lots of money was given to Gaza to enable itself to build so that there could be peaceful co-existence. Israel tolerated the regular rockets sent over from Gaza to Israel as they had the Iron dome. Israel was treating its neighbours better.

And look how that turned out for Israel. The people slaughtered on October 7th were the peaceful left wing Israelis, the type who did initiatives to bring Israelis and Palestinians together. The ones who wanted a secure peaceful future for all. I know of a family in one of the Kibbutz who were friends with a Palestinian man. Turns out he used his knowledge from visiting them to inform the Hamas terrorist attacks on them.

It is just astonishing that people can say things like 'they have to treat their neighbours better' with such a complete lack of reflection and insight.

Yes, treating neighbours better has to include things like not launching a brutal terrorist attack on children, women and men, raping, burning, torturing, murdering and hostage taking. But somehow, extraordinarily, I don't think, that is what you meant.

It is only Israel. who has the responsibility to be the 'better neighbour' no matter what atrocity befalls them. The ' bad neighbour' narrative will not be applied to those who attack Israel.

It is this, this absolute blind prejudice. The refusal to acknowledge that Something Happened to Israel, that sparked all this. The refusal to apportion blame or responsibility to those who DELIBERATELY AND KNOWINGLY started this conflict on October 7th. It is this that shows the utter blind hatred and prejudice that means these people will always condemn Israel. no matter what, but never those who attack Israel. This poster, however unwittingly, could not have proved this blinding hatred more clearly. And it clearly has blinded him or her from seeing clearly.

Yes not one bit of aggression by Israel since 2005. 😡

Timeline: Israel’s attacks on Gaza since 2005

This is the latest assault by Israel on Gaza since the 11-day war in May 2021 killed hundreds.

I haven't read the full thread .. however, I spend half my life ( or it feels it!) Using the dictionary on my kindle! .. I won't use words I don't know the meaning of, but I don't half feel thick checking the meaning of words!

Yup, council estate, ( scheme actually) married well enough where he's making me middle class... by God, it's weird for us poor folks. Lol8

You should be pleased with yourself that you're choosing to read things that challenge you, and don't ever feel stupid for looking up words, you're learning as you go and there's no shame in ignorance, only in willful ignorance.
