To think that people shouldn’t wear large squirts of very very potent perfume?

It’s the equivalent of listening to music and shite on loud speaker on public transport. Everyone around them has to suffer it.

I was actually wheezing and felt nauseous at the strength of someone’s perfume the other day and I couldn’t leave or move away from it.

FFS, why are people so self absorbed?

I really can't stand strong perfume! I've had to move train carriages before now due to the overpowering smell, I'd rather suffer someone's BO as that, while unpleasant, doesn't trigger my migraines or my daughter's asthma.

There was a thread on here last month about which perfumes to wear that have a lasting scent.

It seemed some people actively want to be smellable from a distance.

I think it's rude and a bit uncouth, just like playing music out loud in public, if you wear perfume it should be subtle and only smellable up close if you lean in for a hug, not from several feet away.

From what I know of mumsnet there are an unlucky amount of people who seem to not be able to do anything normally. They are scared if someone tries to ring their phones or knock on their doors, sending them in to a blinding shake and panic. They go into meltdown because family members try to hug or kiss their newborn, so they must shut themselves off with their ‘little family’. When they open their front doors to eventually go out there is a hoard of dogs jumping up at them at every turn and like a World War One soldier they go into shell shock because the whole world is ‘doused’ in perfume, blows smoke or vapes directly in their faces or just dares to exist, mumsnetters must be the unluckiest. People I’m sure were more tolerant of one another years ago, from opinions on here, and I’ve only offered a few, everyone is turning into whining main characters who think everything revolves around what only they like, we have to share, so just get on with it!

I also rarely come across people doused as is being touted on here, and generally can only smell someone’s perfume or aftershave if I’m standing close in conversation,

so I’m surprised by some of the comments, where people come across this so regularly they feel sick for days or get ptsd.

Was going to ask this too but was afraid and wondered if I were anosmic, I do use public transport :)

My nose picks up lot of Baccarat Rouge or its dupe equivalents /something leather from air. I had quick spray of Zara temptation and my sleeve still reeks of it months later. Otherwise it is either my nose easily tuning out florals - or Muglers and Black Orchid aren't as prevalent these days. Chanels are more diluted too.

To escape flurry of mumsnet posts talking about you, just don't buy Matiere Premier Vanilla Powder - this thing is truly 1000x nuclear and makes everything else a mere rosewater (which is a rarity)

Become a hermit
But not in a cave near where herbs are growing. Smelly bastards

Brandnewskytohangyourstarsupon · 09/10/2024 08:02

A woman at work who smokes and sprays every time she goes for a fag, it makes you choke.

Woman in an auditorium sitting behind me. Doors behind us so every time the doors were opened I got a blast of it but could smell it constantly.

bloke on the train sitting across from me.

They are everywhere, every day.

What are these perfumes that are so strong they fill an entire shop, or can be smelt over chlorine in a swimming pool???

Oblomov24 · 09/10/2024 05:53

It's rare for anyone's perfume or aftershave to be that strong, plus I love strong ones.

Dh always smells nice, even naturally. I've been complemented many times on my perfume, by colleagues, in shops, people always say I smell nice.

MidnightMeltdown · 09/10/2024 01:23

I don't like this either. Perfume is something that you should smell when you're up close and personal, not from across the room. One spray is usually enough.

Unfortunately the ones who go overboard are almost always the ones with dreadful taste in perfume too.

MoonlightMemories · 09/10/2024 01:13

Not just public transport, but I work indoors with not alot of great ventilation and occasionally a colleague or two come in to work frome time to time wearing excessive amounts of very strong perfume/cologne - to the point my eyes have ended up stinging, needing me to rinse them and it's triggered coughing fits (no known history of asthma, but I am sensitive in terms of allergies etc). There really is no need to wear that much smelly stuff!

Garlicbest · 09/10/2024 01:11

You're quite right, I shouldn't. Sorry.

I also smoke and eat garlic (not necessarily at the same time). Having weighed up my putative responsibility to fellow commuters and people in queues, I concluded that at least half of them do really annoying things so are undeserving of my personal restraint. As to the less annoying remainder, I almost regretfully decided to prioritise my own enjoyment over their olfactory convenience.

Like I said: sorry. I don't play media on my phone, though. Small mercies and that.

latetonews · 09/10/2024 01:03

I haven't found it to be mature women but I have noticed a pattern to the heavily perfumed offenders where I work and I meet hundreds of people a day. at my workplace.

Men in their twenties or thirties, well groomed but in an Essex or Dubai kind of way. So basically chavs with a bit of spare cash.

I remember when Poison first came on the market
Every other person seemed be drenched in it.

Disgusting it was too. Used to work with someone drenched in Estée Lauder Beautiful, she’d get nose blind to it and keep resquirting. Awful.

Heresoneimadearlier · 09/10/2024 00:21

You lot on here must pass out if you venture into John Lewis.

rainfallpurevividcat · 09/10/2024 00:04

I don't notice perfume very often. But there are several colleagues in my office who smoke- obviously outside, but I was in a meeting with them today and the smell was awful, and it feels like it gets in my throat.

God I was trapped in the car with my elderly MIL for 3 hours last February, there and back, and she reeked and I mean reeked of Angel which she resprayed all over before we got out of the car. I was gagging, we had to open the windows and it was snowing! My DH actually ended up having to use the carpet shampooer on the seat and even then it lingered. She has always used far too much perfume but it has become ridiculous.

I had an older neighbour who was..fragrant. it didn't bother me until I had PFB. After the neighbour had had a hold.. baby stank!
A week old baby smelling of lady perfume was not something I could cope with.

Strangely, the same happens now, many years later, with one of my cats. I don't know where he goes but he comes back smelling of perfume☹️

TenWeeCaramelJoeys · 08/10/2024 23:52

I have extremely porous hair and if I'm beside someone wearing strong perfume for too long, I can smell it in my hair for ages. It makes me feel really nauseous.

MsLavender · 08/10/2024 23:35

I can't get upset over perfume smells when the air is polluted with the stench of BO, cannabis, car fumes and sickly smelling vapes, I'll take perfume over any of those smells any day of the week!

SD1978 · 08/10/2024 23:03

Mainly all I smell is teenagers doused in body spray- sol de janeiro number whatever is popular this week- but then teenagers have always doused 🤣 can't say I have the issue with adults much that I've come across- most adults have learnt three is enough. Although that's probably controversial given it MN and much like the chicken that can feed 10, half a squirt only is ever acceptable.

HistoryMmam · 08/10/2024 23:03

I love smelling perfume and aftershave on other people. I also enjoy wearing perfume. I had no idea it was considered antisocial. I have lots of compliments about my perfume and haven’t noticed anyone coughing or showing signs of PTSD.

JeanLundegaard · 08/10/2024 22:49

One of my favourite things about getting ready is deciding which perfume to wear. Three sprays every day.

It doesn't upset me as much as rancid BO. The amount of people who can not possibly use deodorant as there BO makes my eyes bleed. Who the hell lives with them? It's disgusting. As least with perfume your trying. With BO you have no self awareness or consideration for anyone even yourself. Smelling of pee I can sympathetic ( from a distance) because you don't know. But deodorant? Smelling of weed is also chary. Especially if you have dispelled kids. Screams "my money goes on drugs, fuck my kids needs" is that judgy enough?

I think people don't wash properly
They get in the shower, rub some shower gel under their armpits with their hands and call it a day

One of my colleagues was complaining about his stinky feet and I said make sure you alternate shoes, cotton socks, are you using soap to wash your feet
He said "but the shower gel runs down?"
Give me strength!

StickyStones · 08/10/2024 22:27

Squirt is a funny word

JaneEyreLaughing · 08/10/2024 22:24

I suppose it won't be long before the well known imbeciles of this parish-Khan, Thunberg or Miliband decide to shout that perfume is killing us; stealing our future; killing the planet;destroying the air and making it impossible for giant pandas to breed and anyone who is caught wearing it should be fined on the spot..

I go on public transport a lot and the amount of BO, greasy hair, fusty clothes, unwashed hands, cheesy feet etc is gross.
