To think that people shouldn’t wear large squirts of very very potent perfume?

It’s the equivalent of listening to music and shite on loud speaker on public transport. Everyone around them has to suffer it.

I was actually wheezing and felt nauseous at the strength of someone’s perfume the other day and I couldn’t leave or move away from it.

FFS, why are people so self absorbed?

I have a total aversion to chanel no 5. I cannot abide it. It smells like musty old ladies to me (and I am not far off being an old lady myself).

I went to the cinema recently and the person in the seat beside me was doused in the stuff. She was only 25 or so. She reeked. I put up with it for the first half, scarf wrapped subtly round my face, then pretended to go out to the loo and came back and sat on the other side of dh, two seats away.

It is completely gross. Worst perfume ever.

No, not spraying while out. That is disgusting.

I mean dousing themselves excessively before.

Disgusting 😂

Doyouthinktheyknow · 09/10/2024 21:08

YANBU, I had to speak to one of my team about their perfume, it was so strong it overpowered every room they went in! And we are in healthcare! Awful for patients and staff who can’t move away!

I don't go nose blind to my perfumes... they linger all day, close but pleasurably persistent. They are for my own enjoyment, not for others. If I found I was going nose blind to a scent I definitely wouldn't bother with it again.

If you’re not going nose blind then you’re wearing either incredibly strong perfume or a shit Ton of it, no way round it.

i can’t smell my perfume after a few mins, which is normal. I asked my daughter if she could smell Perfume on me or not, and she said yes, it’s quite strong.

so if you can smell it it’s what people are complaining about.

BurntBroccoli · 09/10/2024 19:25

I spritz perfume in the air and just walk through so it's not too strong.

DrCoconut · 09/10/2024 18:40

@ObieJoyful me too. People who don't suffer migraines won't understand the sinking feeling you get when you're in an enclosed public space such as a bus and someone arrives absolutely stinking of perfume. Or worse still starts spraying it. There is just no need to douse yourself in the stuff or spray it in public. It's probably because I associate it with illness but I find the smell offensive and would 100% rather smell BO or weed than perfume (though smelling none of the above is better!) My workplace banned spraying perfume and asked people to be mindful about how much they have on in response to how ill it makes some of us, which is a huge bonus.

Maybe if other people are that triggered they should just walk around with a peg on their nose. I wouldn't expect anyone else to change what they do/wear for me!

How do you feel about the smoking ban? Do you think it’s fine for people to smoke indoors in public spaces?

You may smell them but perhaps everyone else smells them x30. That's the whole point.

I like my perfumes to wear close to the skin so they don't intrude on others' spaces. It's quite hard now most perfumes come in atomisers, because you can't control the dose you get with one squirt. Some atomisers give you a tiny little pixie breath of perfume; others a massive hose-like dousing. If the scent is powerful, this can mean even one squirt is a squirt too many.

The old-fashioned non-atomiser bottles were better... you could put one little dab of perfume on a pulse point so only you and anyone close enough to hug would know it was there.

As we go nose blind very quickly to our own perfume. In mins to very max a couple of hours, I do wonder the point of wearing it at all if you can’t smell it and only those so close as to be hugging can. Unless you’re constantly being hugged by someone who you wish to smell it. I can’t see the point. For you you may as well not bother.

Perfumed body lotion has a much more subtle effect.

Oblomov24 · 09/10/2024 05:53

It's rare for anyone's perfume or aftershave to be that strong, plus I love strong ones.

Dh always smells nice, even naturally. I've been complemented many times on my perfume, by colleagues, in shops, people always say I smell nice.

The ones who don't like the smell don't say anything.

As it triggers my migraines I couldn't agree more! Very selfish!

VapeVamp12 · 09/10/2024 12:12

I got on a plane once where a lady in the row behind opened the perfume she had bought in duty free and did a few sprays on her neck and wrists. I didn't say anything but it really annoyed me, it smelt so much stronger in that space. She got a lot of tuts and the man next to her just said "really?" 😂

MidnightMeltdown · 09/10/2024 11:51

Theonewhogotaway · 09/10/2024 07:55

I also rarely come across people doused as is being touted on here, and generally can only smell someone’s perfume or aftershave if I’m standing close in conversation,

so I’m surprised by some of the comments, where people come across this so regularly they feel sick for days or get ptsd.

It's usually in restaurants that I notice it - when you can smell the person on the next table.

It's not always women, some men go overboard with the aftershave, but it tends to bevyounger men who haven't learnt to apply an appropriate amount. Usually I find that it's the same sort of woman who does this. Over a certain age with a gaudy blouse.

I like to wear perfume sometimes too, but I think it's antisocial to apply loads of it. Makeup is different because that doesn't affect anyone else - so layer on as much as you please.

outforawalkbiatch · 09/10/2024 09:06

@Hoardasurass that depends on the scent if you're being that fussy
You don't rub your wrists together after applying, it affects the scent and burns off top notes faster
Some scents will need 1 spray, others can take 6 depending on the atomiser and the projection of the scent

Shalimar - 1 spray
Clean reserve skin - 6 sprays will have the same effect as 1 spray of shalimar

You do realise that you will be making people gag and triggering both migraines and asthma attacks all because you like the smell and never learned how to use perfume properly ie 2 sprays to your wrists rub your wrists together and then rub them on your neck that's all you need anything else is excessive.
Also you don't have to stay in just don't drown yourself in sent

Seriously. If we really had to think about that sort of thing every time we left the house, life would be bloody impossible. It's ridiculous.

Hoardasurass · 09/10/2024 08:57

IDontHateRainbows · 08/10/2024 18:05

I douse myself heavily in perfume at home, I love the smell and probably have become a bit nose blind as I use it daily.

I don't spritz it when out but I'm certainly not going to stay in the house reclusively because I put some on earlier.

Edited

Nope. I think people should be able to live their life how they see fit, and if they want to be dripping in perfume, so be it.

You are right, I probably will 😂, but I appreciate your approval, it means a lot. After reading this thread and so many other similar ones, I’ve realised that mumsnet is a toxic addiction that I need to break, some people are just absolute weirdos. I’m going to break this and go back to real life, where I read books, draw, paint and just do anything that doesn’t involve doomscrolling through completely mental opinions, I want my mind to be at peace again. I like to maybe know that we all have opinions, like arseholes, but we keep them to ourselves and live and let live, so to coin a mumsnet sentiment ‘off I fuck!’

arthar · 09/10/2024 08:47

I don't really mind perfume, even with a sensitive nose, but I can't bear stale perfume. You know the ones that spray perfume all over themselves, don't shower and then repeat for several days. Even worse is when they spray it on coats and carves, so the smell build up in layers and it smells really stale.

I understand my sensitives are my problem, I'm not ranting and saying people shouldn't wear perfume, but they should definitely think twice before layering it

OneRarelySeesABrazierTheseDays · 09/10/2024 08:44

Ban perfume now!!!

A few are affected, not necessarily allergic you understand, but punish the whole world because that's what it has become

From what I know of mumsnet there are an unlucky amount of people who seem to not be able to do anything normally. They are scared if someone tries to ring their phones or knock on their doors, sending them in to a blinding shake and panic. They go into meltdown because family members try to hug or kiss their newborn, so they must shut themselves off with their ‘little family’. When they open their front doors to eventually go out there is a hoard of dogs jumping up at them at every turn and like a World War One soldier they go into shell shock because the whole world is ‘doused’ in perfume, blows smoke or vapes directly in their faces or just dares to exist, mumsnetters must be the unluckiest. People I’m sure were more tolerant of one another years ago, from opinions on here, and I’ve only offered a few, everyone is turning into whining main characters who think everything revolves around what only they like, we have to share, so just get on with it!
