Retraining as a reiki practitioner

Mydogpongs · 07/10/2024 12:48

I woke up again this morning so unhappy about work, my boss, my workload, my bank balance, time away from my family and home and decided I need to do something about it.

I got a very odd ball of energy feeling my tummy when the thought of training in reiki popped into my head. Now I'm not a hippy or anything and have never had reiki and i know little to nothing about it but I can't shift this feeling. It feels like it's the universe telling me why has ut taken so long to realise this is what I'm meant to do!

Would I be mad to do this? Could I make a living doing this? I'd there anyone willing to give me the lowdown on this sort of work? Any pointers or reality checks are welcome but please be kind.

Why did you spend a thousand pounds qualifying in something you think is bollocks? Was it just for the money? Or did you previously believe in it and the training changed your mind?

Good question! I spent a couple of years keeping an open mind to such things - I had the money back then, was in therapy and exploring different approaches to life.

I didn't go down the road of cultish and/or sex modalities (dunno why I bothered with the 'or', all cults veer towards dodgy sex!) but attended a bunch of motivational courses and learned different 'healing' methods. They varied from borderline woo to common sense. It was interesting, particularly from a psychological point of view.

I actually got my investment back fairly quick, because my freshly-acquired insight into how these things work led me to stop wasting money on holistic health 😆 Haven't had as much as a hand massage since then!

No-one "believes in the power of massage". They understand massage works because of medical studies, evidence and bio-mechanics.

You have to "believe" that reiki works because it is unsubstantiated horseshit.

I think you've taken a comment a bit to literally. Obviously massage isn't a belief. I don't believe In reiki but i also don't find it necessary to shit on people who do, massage is an objectively helpful skill, reiki is subjective.

I'm a 'qualified' reiki practitioner! I should say upfront that I think it's all bollocks - any good that comes of it (and it sometimes does) comes from the person getting your full attention and goodwill for an hour or so. You can achieve this with any alternative therapy; reiki's the easiest to deliver because you don't actually do anything.

There are plenty of reiki trainers and self-accredited 'professional' bodies that will give you a certificate after you've paid for the training. Mine was three days in person, with a lot of bullshit health education, some quasi-therapy content and some pretend 'energy' rituals with bell-ringing and air signs. Just find one that seems convenient to you.

Can you make a living from it? Probably not. Most practitioners offer a range of holistic therapies; most of their income comes from the massages and reflexology, etc. You need to be good at helping people feel calm, centred and contented.

You may as well go for it, in your spare time to start with. See if you can start building a good reputation among friends and friends of friends. Wishing you best ... and sending success energy your way, of course 😉

I said men. Plural. But whatever floats your boat.

There was a thing about men and boats the other week wasn't there!

I'm already sleeping with a married man is that a problem? We don't have sex much anymore we have been married 25 years but lots of sleeping happens.

Can't remember her name. She was a somewhat overbearing Australian with, apparently, a strong reputation but this was quite a while back. Frankly, it doesn't matter! That course cost about a grand - you can find much cheaper ones, some only take a couple of hours over Zoom.

Blimey a couple of hours via zoom for a grand’s worth of “training”. Maybe that’s where you should focus your efforts OP.

Train the reiki masters online and let them do the reiki itself if they believe in it.

A friend used to go for reiki sessions to have his aura felt. Or that’s what he told his wife anyway.

I recommend considering it as an option but I'd go for massage training first. Everyone believes in the power of massage but reiki is hit and miss. I know someone who does massage, she's added extras to it over the years, like aromatherapy, using hot stones etc, she's doing acupuncture next. She makes a living and loves it, some days she's drained but said often it's relaxing for her too, a dim room, relaxing music, lovely smells, no or minimal talking, and kneading flesh like dough. I think you could add reiki to your portfolio but it can't be only thing.

Hardly.

Unless you think sleeping with married men is cool.

Go for it!
To the haters and non believers, you're not the target audience, so why comment? Your negative vibes are exactly why you should open your mind and give reiki a go.

Buttheywereonlysatellites51 · 08/10/2024 12:42

Well I don't think Reiki is BS and I wouldn't practice it if I thought that way. But if it's something you have a strong gut feeling about, why not explore it further and see what happens?

ShellFace · 08/10/2024 12:22

I might have been prepared to not entirely dismiss reiki until the pandemic- when it was widely claimed to work virtually 😬

GuestFeatu · 08/10/2024 12:16

If you've never had reiki yourself and you know nothing about it, what you are actually asking is whether reiki is a profitable scam for you to get in on. Yes reiki is nonsense but at least most reiki practitioners believe in the nonsense and therefore are providing some kind of service to their clients. You don't even do that - you just want to know if you can scam believers into paying you. That's very scummy.

Awdecca · 08/10/2024 12:14

I had it once - my acupuncturist had recently trained and said she'd give me a free session.

I went home after and felt incredibly anxious, then burst into tears. Slept heavily then woke up feeling the best I'd felt in years. It was weird because I was expecting nothing and just let her do it as a favour.

Hoppinggreen · 08/10/2024 12:13

Aside from anything else how are going to find clients? Will you be self employed? Can you run a business?

Imalongtimepostingmum · 08/10/2024 12:11

I see a very well qualified Physio who does reiki as an add on. I bloody love it. I'm floating on the ceiling..

Hope you find a way out of your current role OP, ideally to a more lucrative place than reiki practitioner!

Thelnebriati · 08/10/2024 11:11

How much do the courses cost? I've known people that have done them and they are very coy about the costs, and very adept at changing the subject and trying to sell you some essential oils.

Fastback · 08/10/2024 11:08

LizzieBowesLyon · 07/10/2024 12:52

Isn’t it, you know, absolute nonsense?

Yeah it is, yeah.

Placebo has a 50% success rate ...

Is this placebo percentage brought to us by the reeky organization.

Augustus40 · 08/10/2024 10:48

I trained in it up to level three. I found I did not enjoy treating people. It wasn't my thing. The vast majority of those who do these courses do it for 'personal development'. Same as Indian Head massage etc.

You think the ethical problem with prostitution is adultery? Wow.

Not the only problem no but then I never said that it was.

Well done for trying to put words in my mouth. Wow you lol.

Shame, at least as a sex worker you'd be in a more ethical profession.

Hardly.

I have already commented but was really interested to see that you also work for a charity!

I have been in that sector for over 20 years and I have grown to hate it.

Like you I have seen money being wasted on Trustee's and CEO's vanity projects, dodgy fundraising practices and also a lot of bullying, including of staff with mental health conditions and/or disabilities.

Not to mention a lot of 'hush' money being paid out to directors who make claims for bullying and unfair dismissals to avoid employment tribunals and more money wasted on hiring 'consultants' who are usually the CEO's mate...

I find it appalling that donated funds are used that way and that so many charities are often really poor employers that treat staff and volunteers badly.

That's why like you I want to get out and retrain because I have lost any kind of interest in continuing to work for the 3rd sector.

The universe is not telling you to hand over thousands of pounds for 'attunements' and being told about 'secret symbols' to think nice thoughts about people.

It's telling you that your job is shit and you need to get another one, not to make your worries about money even worse because you've handed over thousands and can't make your mortage or rent payments.

It's true but this morning it really felt like the thing that the universe was telling me. I love how mumsnet bring things back to reality.

Oh and I have dropped my mooncup OMG that wasn't good! Bring on the menopause
