Would you send reception child to school today ? Illness related

My threshold for illness and sending my child to nursery has always been very low. So any slight issue, I tend to keep her home.

She's started school now and her brother has had a fever for a few days. She woke up today and I took her temperature at 38. I told her she may not be able to go to school today and she was distraught because she's going to miss her friends, bless her.

Anyway, she's downstairs now and the temp seems to have come down on its own at around 37.4, some times 37.7.

In my opinion, she should not go in today.

What would you do ?

As I said, my usual threshold is low but I understand that now she's at school - she'll sometimes need to go in even with a sore throat or something but I draw the line at waking up with a fever ? To me that means she's not well and coming down with something.

She says she doesn't have pain anywhere.

You're the one delaying things OP.
Very simple, if she's unwell at school they'll simply call you to collect her from either the trip location or school.

I just don't know if we can even be on time to get to school at this point, that's the issue. And she really needs to be on time for the trip.

What time does she start school? It's only 7.20! Get her ready and send her in, she's fine and she wants to go, your anxiety about health is not a reason to keep her off OP. Save the sick days for when she's sick because they are coming.

Christmastinsel78 · 07/10/2024 07:19

Send her in, school will call you if she becomes unwell, which she doesn't sound like she is at the moment.

Phonicshaskilledmeoff · 07/10/2024 07:19

Get off here and get to the trip. Pack their breakfast in Tupperware for the car if needs be.
from what you’ve said, the brother would t be staying off school either in our house.

Maybe stop wasting time posting here and taking her temp and just get ready?

No not at all. I'm just worried we are going to be late now and I don't want to make them late for their trip. They explicitly said that the kids need to be on time

Stop dithering then and crack on with getting her ready. How long does it take to get there? She's not ill and she's going to be gutted to miss her friends and the trip. There's zero reason for her to be at home.

My 6 year old had diarrhoea on Wednesday night so I had to keep her at home Thursday and Friday. She was totally fine on Friday and missing her friends. Was so tempted to send her in. No way would I be keeping her at home for one dodgy temp reading.

NotaCoolMum · 07/10/2024 07:18

I’d send her in as her temperature is below the threshold for her to be sent home.

TRUST ME on this please- she’s going to pick up loads of bugs and illnesses and will need to stay at home in the future. The last thing you want is the school calling you out on the amount of absences she has.

I don't know I just don't want her feeling horrible at school and also giving her illness to other kids. I think when they're unwell, they should stay home.

It didn't really matter as much in nursery but now it matters. They have a class trip this morning she's been dying to go on.

Is she unwell?

Get off here and get her ready. She seems fine.

shuffleofftobuffalo · 07/10/2024 07:16

I'd send her in no hesitation and I'd not have been taking her temperature. A too poorly for school child is almost always quite obvious and they will quickly tell you. From what you describe she hasn't got a fever.

You'll soon get in trouble with attendance levels if your threshold is so low. Take her in, even if you're a bit late.

To be fair to you though, I do remember though at nursery it would be them saying don't bring the child in so it's a bit different, school is more like don't keep them off unless they're dead.

Are you apprehensive about the trip OP? Seems like there's more to this.

Should her brother even be off if he just has a bit of a cough? How are you defining on and off fever?

Please try to get her in for her trip!!

Hercisback1 · 07/10/2024 07:15

Stop posting and get her ready

LovedFedAndNoonesDead · 07/10/2024 07:15

Did she have any calpol or ibuprofen when her temperature was 38?

If not, and it’s come down if it’s own volition, then I wouldn’t hesitate to send her in to school!! Tell the teacher that her brother is unwell and, if she becomes poorly, you’ll happily come and collect her!. If she has had it, I would keep her home today as you don’t know whether it would have gone higher without the meds!

MagicianMoth · 07/10/2024 07:15

I wouldn't even consider not sending her in

EYP2021 · 07/10/2024 07:14

Send her in, tell school her brother has been unwell ask them to keep an eye on her and call you if needs be.

Tbskejue · 07/10/2024 07:13

Sounds like she’s well in herself and no temp so of course send her in. The first reading sounds a blip

angrylizard · 07/10/2024 07:13

My advice is stop taking her temp and go by how she seems, and give some calpol for good luck 👍🏻

I’d send her in, she doesn’t sound ill at all??

savetheday · 07/10/2024 07:12

I've taken it again, it's 37.5

OP posts:
Whinge · 07/10/2024 07:12

No school. They'll send her home anyway, anything over 37.5 they can't be in school

School won't send her home just because she has a temperature over 37.5. If a child appears well in themselves, school wouldn't have any reason to check their temperature.

itwasnevermine · 07/10/2024 07:12

Did you take her temp just as she woke up? It'll be higher then because she's been wrapped up warm in bed.

Honestly I'd send her. No sign of any illness and she was warm because she had been in bed. If she needs to come home, school will ring you.

savetheday · 07/10/2024 07:11

Talipesmum · 07/10/2024 07:08

If she seems well in herself, keen to go in, I’d send her, but be on alert for the day if need be. What’s up with her brother, other than a fever?

He's had a fever on and off since Thursday. A bit of a cough, that kind of thing.
