He called a wasp a moron at dinner

Ok, this isn't a serious thread exactly just a weird moment

So I was having dinner with my partner, a very nice outdoor meal. Very romantic and looking into each other's eyes etc.

Then a wasp came along and dropped into his wine. He responded by saying 'get out of there you moron' which caused the couple next to us of stop talking and stare at him then me. He then gave the wasp a small pep talk after rescuing it.

I felt embarrassed as I felt it was a really OTT response! I wanted to say was it really necessary to verbally abuse that wasp but seemed an odd thing to say...it just felt like a very angry response

Given how often we call our cat an idiot in our house (he's really not the sharpest tool in the box) I'm pretty sure a wasp landing in a glass of wine deserves the label "moron". I mean it's not a very sensible thing to do is it? I think I'd get on quite well with your bf, similar humour?

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 07/10/2024 20:39

Maybe the couple were staring at you because they had lost control of their remote control wasp and were suddenly aware that it had dive bombed into your partner's wine.

pineapplesundae · 07/10/2024 20:35

You must be very young to be embarrassed by something so trivial. Do you always worry so much about what you imagine others are thinking? The couple probably looked to see what the bother was about and nothing more.

Champagnetennis17 · 07/10/2024 20:26

Get a life.. you do sound uptight!! Was he joking? I mean lighten up a bit and don’t worry what people think of you!

grumpygrape · 07/10/2024 20:25

OP, your only response, if you felt people were looking at you thinking he was calling you a moron, should have been ‘Don’t call me Maureen’. You’re probably too young to understand so I recommend watching the Airplane film (movie) from 1980.

I always thought moron was something you say that it is quite angry and nasty

So it was the word and how he said it

Maybe that's not others perceive it

Moron is a harmless light-hearted term like 'daft'. Or idiot. Or pain in the arse.

If I were him I would be calling that wasp a LOT worse than 'moron'. Calling a wasp a moron seems quite endearing and funny to me.

keffie12 · 07/10/2024 20:08

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I think his reaction is funny. The others need to lighten up. Though humour is subjective, I know

januaryjan · 07/10/2024 19:59

I never knew wasps were multilingual. I've learned so many things on mumsnet.

DeanElderberry · 07/10/2024 19:54

For instance, when I'm about to switch the shower on I might say the Cellar spiders 'darlings, it's time to move up and out if you don't want to get wet, this really isn't a sensible place to spend much time in'.

DeanElderberry · 07/10/2024 19:32

I'm just amazed at how many people claim they don't give errant arthropods pep talks. Do they not even talk to spiders?

I might throw and I say might throw , a cheerio or honey loop at a drowning wasp or other multi legged critters to hang onto - from a distance - after that it's on it's own and I wouldn't usually hang around to engage it in conversation.

I mean what would you say to a spider?- 'How's it hanging' or something like that?
or,
'Read anything interesting on the web lately'?

But a 'pep talk' is a whole different packet of biscuits. Where would you start?

DisabledDemon · 07/10/2024 19:48

I've called wasps a great deal worse!

TorroFerney · 07/10/2024 19:46

januaryjan · 07/10/2024 19:00

A pep talk?😮

Was the wasp struggling to do laps around the glass and he was motivating it to push harder or something? 🐝

What did he say to the wasp? 🤔

Is your beloveds last name Doolittle by any chance?👀
So many questions.

We gave a weedy looking wasp a pep talk to try and get it to eat the dregs of a chocolate pudding we’d finished. They ate small in numbers and stature this year and needed all the help they could get.

Toptops · 07/10/2024 19:45

You need to relax, OP.
Your boyfriend sounds hilarious!

Exactly, when you are removing them you talk them through what you are doing and ask for cooperation.

Outdoors in this weather??

I caught one resting on our bathroom floor this morning. I gave it a pep talk as I threw it out.

op I like the cut of your husbands gib. Of course you chat to wasps, we were telling the wasps in Germany that they were a bit stupid going in my daughter’s coke light when there were stickier drinks on the table.

wizzbitt · 07/10/2024 19:40

I'm withholding judgement until I hear from the wasp itself. Hopefully it's sobered up enough to enter the discussion
Waits expectantly 😉

Rottweilermummy · 07/10/2024 19:39

Exactly what I'd call a wasp lol especislly if it went in my drink! The people next to u prob just intrigued as to who or what your partner was calling a moron , my husband would have rescued it , he once rescued one out of a canal. I have a thing for talking to creatures wasps tend to get verbal abuse, but maybe we should be nicer to them, then they might not sting so much

Platypuslover · 07/10/2024 19:31

I would just like to interject moron is the Welsh word for carrot. The first o is pronounced more like a short continental a tho.

Downunderduchess · 07/10/2024 19:29

How did the wasp feel about it? I could imagine it might be triggering.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 07/10/2024 19:23

I think the wasp's a keeper at least.

He has shown remarkable forbearance. Flying along innocently only to end up plopping into a treacherous sea when the two giant lifeguards on duty fail to notice him and usher him away in advance. (They are too busy batting their eyelids at each other.) Then one of them shouts angrily and mansplains at him as he tries to recuperate from his ordeal.

But still he does not sting anyone!

Definitely a keeper!

No, it's a waste of everyone's time.

Outdoors in this weather??

Who said it's in the UK?

januaryjan · 07/10/2024 19:14

And how would you give a 'pep talk' to a drunken wasp to boot?

januaryjan · 07/10/2024 19:09

I'm only here to find out how you'd give a wasp a pep talk.
Do wasps understand English or would you need an interpreter?
