Taking an object to an interview

Stickseas0n · 05/10/2024 09:21

Okay, where do I start
I've just had a job interview confirmed and they've asked me to bring an object that best reflects my personality 😂
Never heard of this before
What does one bring? 🤔
Not strictly an AIBU but can I have some ideas please!

It's only a seasonal position
In a retail shop is all I'll say incase they find my thread 😬😂

Then why are they bothering with such shite ? I’d be running a mile from this job. Sounds like your every move is going to be micromanaged to death.

Changingplace · 05/10/2024 09:53

Ugh this is the kind of shite they were obsessed with in my old job, I wish they’d introduced it at interview stage so I could’ve run away, it was absolutely unbearable and cringey.

Harvestfestivalknickers · 05/10/2024 09:53

A ruler, cos you are always straight with people.

Vibrator

Shows you're hard working, always buzzing about and keen to get stuck in.

A wrap of some white powder which could possibly be illicit would also work. The coke addicts at my work are definitely the hardest workers and buzzy. Pretty annoying though so yeah, maybe just the vibrator.

WideFootWelly · 05/10/2024 09:51

This sounds like my idea of hell in an employer.

You just want the job right? Take a flower (in a little pot maybe).
You're bright and cheerful, and just here for the season. Maybe you'll return next year if people enjoy you.

It's the kind of bullshit they're looking for.

TotalAbsenceOfImperialRaiment · 05/10/2024 09:50

I'd take an old-fashioned broom and say I travelled to the interview on it.

FFS, it's a temporary fucking seasonal job. What are these companies thinking of???

Absolutely no disrespect to you OP as I'm looking for a temporary job myself, but how hard do these companies make it for themselves and prospective employees?

I can offer no suggestions I'm afraid, but as a PP said take a Christmas decoration because you're applying for a seasonal position and Christmas is your favourite time of year, blah, blah, blah 😀

Best of luck to you OP and If I find myself in a similar situation, I will be sure to come back on this thread for suggestions.

A piece of jewellery. Then make up some bullshit about how the clasp reflects your reliability and strength and the fancy bit represents your imagination/love of something or some other inspiring crap.

This is perfect! And if I really had to take something I'd steal this idea!

WeirdyWorldy · 05/10/2024 09:43

RocketPanda · 05/10/2024 09:25

I'd bring one single grain of sand because that would be the measure of patience I'd have to deal with such bullshit.

This made me snigger! Absolutely!

Can you imagine what it would be like working in this organisation?

It's a no from me!

meganorks · 05/10/2024 09:42

WD40 - everyone knows I can reliably solve most problems

I would love to say I had some divine inspiration for this, but I genuinely just looked up and saw some WD40 on my shelf!

So I'd say, have a look round your house and see what things you have that you could make up some bullshit about!!

EmberAsh · 05/10/2024 09:41

Don't overthink it. They just want to know a bit about you as a person. If you like music, take a gig ticket.
Don't take Lego because of the strange idea from Google. If you enjoy playing with Lego with your kids, that's a good reason to take it.

echt · 05/10/2024 09:41

I had to do this for an interview but then the whole point was to see how I could cogently and engagingly talk about an object, telling a story about it in three minutes. Which is what the volunteer work was and is all about.

Ponoka7 · 05/10/2024 09:41

Stickseas0n · 05/10/2024 09:23

I'm a friendly person, get on well with everyone, reliable, will gladly be over worked 😂

So you are basically a donkey. Their favourite food is straw, they seem to like wearing hats and badges with their name on. You are actually made for retail.

MonsteraMama · 05/10/2024 09:40

If you're happy to be overworked you could take a doormat. They'd probably be delighted.

Honestly for a seasonal retail job this is a joke. The interview should be "do you have two brain cells to rub together and want a job? Great you're hired."

MasterBeth · 05/10/2024 09:39

PTSDBarbiegirl · 05/10/2024 09:37

My object would be a shithot reference exclaiming me to be the most effective, talented and gifted employee ever.

Nope. Didn't understand the task.

lololulu · 05/10/2024 09:39

A bank statement.

Show them why they really need to give you the job?

Also an empty purse to hand out while you're talking about your bank balance.

Stickseas0n · 05/10/2024 09:37

I have lots of experience in retail, Supervisor experience so I do think I'd fit in but I'm just stumped

StasisMom · 05/10/2024 09:37

Hmm what about a photo of an animal which represents your qualities? I'd say a Labrador or collie but I'm more dig focused. (Or elephants or penguins... )

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 05/10/2024 09:37

Given your self description I'd take in a toy Labrador 😂

Stickseas0n · 05/10/2024 09:37

IsitaHatOrACat · 05/10/2024 09:34

Don't do this. It's very odd! Gig tickets sounds perfect

Do you think? I thought it sounds perfect,
The post carried on to say how you can explain that you/the bricks are customizable depending on the task in hand

Same concept with a jigsaw puzzle I guess, to illustrate you are a good problem solver and fit in

It's a perfectly reasonable answer that points towards a certain type of person - ordered and considered.

It's a better answer than "I brought Metallica tickets because I like Metallica."

You’re my kind of interviewee, @RocketPanda 😄

Freydo · 05/10/2024 09:36

An ex colleague brought some playmobile people to act out a scene. She didn’t get the job but she did get feedback saying how much they’d enjoyed her presentation.

HoppityBun · 05/10/2024 09:36

Your purse / wallet. Like everyone else you’re working because you need the money
