Why do people ask Mumsnet for help naming their baby?!

There are so many threads where people ask what name they should give their baby. I really don’t understand - can’t you do some searching on a baby name website? Or buy a baby names book? It just feels like a weird attention seeking thing!

It’s only ideas, they won’t end up called boaty mc boatface whatever happens.

I would find it helpful to be told things like "It's the name of the equivalent of WKD in France" or "It reminds me of a belly button" or "It sounds like Scooby Doo is saying it" - three critiques I've seen over the years!

The experiences of our friends can be far more limited understandably than millions of global users. And our friends often lack brutal candour!

It's annoying having friends and family say they hate the name. It's easier to get some feedback on mumsnet and then you can either go for it, or not.

But if MIL says she hates the name and you go with it anyway, you will be thinking about how much she hates it every time she says it.

Family are typically much more diplomatic after name is 100% chosen.

It is also good to get a wide range of opinions outside of our own towns circles etc. People might mention a meaning for the name that OP hadn't thought of.

A baby name book is not going to say "people generally feel this name is awful/common/ boring l/ whatever. But people do. Friends/family/coworkers etc are likely to be kind/ soften things a bit etc

But I do feel most babies grow into their name.

Because if you pick a really silly name (like today's-Duckie) MNwill tell you straight, not just say what you want to hear.

Because their friends are too tactful to say ‘Fruitloop is a stupid name’.

And yes, in real life people will just tell you the name is lovely. Baby names are no different to any other topic on MN, you can get the opinions your loved ones are too nice to say to your face even if they're thinking it.

I had girls and decided on their names early on but we didn't find out the sex and struggled with boys names so I posted both times. We had names we liked but didn't love and so hoped that someone would suggest a name we hadn't thought of.

Even if you have decided on a name it can be useful to get opinions from people with varied backgrounds and accents.

Love a baby name thread.

I can maybe see why people ask if they want to give their child a name from their country/culture while living abroad - to see how natives of the country they live in view the name. I can also see why people ask if they have a name idea that is kind of on the borderline of acceptable, to get an idea of how many people think it's truly beyond the pale to call your baby Ferrari or something. I don't see why people come on and say they're so conflicted between a selection of basic chav boys names ending in -ie, or to ask if people think it's okay for them to call their baby something like Binbag like they truly think anyone will say yes.

I don't understand it either.
It's a personal choice..there is always someone who is going to be awful about the names.

Maybe that’s the point, for some people? They want to have someone point out if the name has an obvious obscene abbreviation, or is the name of a famous serial killer, or whatever?

Jc2001 · 04/10/2024 22:31

Why is using mumsnet any different from looking in a book or searching on a baby name website? At least here there is some (probably lightheaded) discussion or feedback. Why is one part of the Internet preferable to another?

People get excited about naming their children, and sharing that experience is all part of it for some people. Is that really so hard to understand?

Because a name is something that most people will have an opinion on and many people want to know in advance what that opinion is. It's like anything people post about on Mumsnet. Why ask for advice on what dress to wear to a wedding when you can browse Asos? Why ask about etiquette for a wedding when you can read Debretts?
