To be annoyed to see my (foreign) name misspelt in work email?

We are working with an external agency on a project.

I am originally from an EU country and I have a first name of Latin origin, but frankly not that difficult to spell correctly.

The agency lead sent me an email, with several of my team members copied in, where they misspelt my name, anglicized it and turned it into a male name in the process...

I have spoken to the agency contact on Teams and emailed them several time so they know full well I am a woman. My name is on my email signature so there is no reason not to spell it correctly.

AIBU to think this is rather unprofessional and to feel annoyed that someone could not double-check they had spelt a foreign name correctly in a work context?

Should I point this out to them or let it slide?

Happens all the time to me and I have an English name. After 52 years you just have to suck it up.

I have a very common name that nonetheless has a few different possible spellings (like Ana / Anna for example). People get it wrong all the time. Couldn’t care less. Life’s too short to manufacture issues where there are none.

I have a Cypriot surname. even though I spell it out still get a Rusdian version of it sometimes. Give up. not worth the hassle

Both me and DP have names that have different spellings. It makes me smile when we get a Christmas card each year from my Aunt with both names spelled wrong.

Nannyoggapple · 03/10/2024 15:09

Oh yeah it can often be autocorrect, not the person's fault too.

Startingagainandagain · 03/10/2024 15:08

Thanks everyone!

I don't want to overreact, so I will drop them an email and point out the correct spelling without copying anyone else.

I have had similar and pointed it out to the chap who apologised and said it was his autocorrect- which I guessed actually. I’d always assume error rather than intentional though.

My director just wrote a 'Goodbye and good luck' type email to a manager who was moving within the organization... and mispelled the guy's name. I think in that case autocorrect had done the dirty on them.

I know someone who has had "Melanie" mispelled as "Meanie" in several emails.

No, YANBU. It's you and your name, your identity. I long ago gave up complaining much about the mis-spelling and mispronunciation of my name. I'll correct people a couple of times, then give up.

I do make sure to correct it, if mis-spelled in something addressed to me.

Talipesmum · 03/10/2024 15:06

I would correct them in my reply, but wouldn’t reply solely to correct them.

I have an English name, and people spell my name wrong at work too.

There are so many variations of names out there.

I would just politely let them know, if I were you.

They will want to get it right next time.

mynameiscalypso · 03/10/2024 15:05

It's rude but it happens all the time. I get alternative versions of my name on a weekly basis, even from close colleagues

Catapultaway · 03/10/2024 15:04

Let it slide.
