To ask if anyone else has received a scam text message about an overdue penalty charge?

I have. It said “You have an overdue Penalty charge notice, today is the last day you can get a 50% discount on your fine…” There was a link which took me to a what looked like gov.uk page, but the web page address was not gov.uk. You had to put your number in to retrieve the details of the penalty charge which I probably unwisely did. Something came up giving the date of the penalty charge as 18 Sept but no location details. We were in Sweden on that date and the car was parked at Heathrow short stay!

Just wondering if anyone else has had similar.

I had 2 of these last week, and like several other posters I don't own a car, or drive.

Purposefullyporous · 02/10/2024 18:11

Oh yeah I've had a few of those recently! I don't own a car nor can I even drive lmao

Alectoishome · 02/10/2024 18:11

Yes I had that this week.

Ormally · 02/10/2024 18:09

Yes, yesterday. I forwarded to the mobile's spam reporting number.

tolerable · 02/10/2024 18:07

yup- I do not drive or have a car!

EwwSprouts · 02/10/2024 18:06

DH got this exact scam last night. The email address ended in an India code.

Igiveupagain · 02/10/2024 18:01

Literally just had the same text message, reported as spam

Awrite · 02/10/2024 17:36

Yes, I got that one today

Also, a phone call from an 020 number claiming to be Vodafone. I'm not with Vodafone.

The scams seem to be coming thick and fast these days

Londonrach1 · 02/10/2024 17:34

Ask yourself why would they have your mobile number. Scam

Just ask yourself how come they have your phone number or email address.

How would people chasing an ignored parking fine or wanting to deliver a parcel know that information?

Yeah, it's just not the procedure. It's first notice affixed to the windscreen, second notice in the post. At no point does anyone text you! I doubt the DVLA gives out phone numbers to any authority.

I reckon they just spam as many random numbers as possible and hope they come across someone vulnerable or easily frightened. It's horrible behaviour.

Yes i had this... the fun thing is you can put whatever you want in as the car reg and it still says the penalty. I put in balls4u 😁

Makelikeatreeandleaf · 02/10/2024 16:20

I got one about half an hour ago.

Boredmum24 · 02/10/2024 16:17

Literally just got this message

Evaka · 02/10/2024 16:16

That one is rampant at the moment, some using comically garbled and threatening language. I'm getting scores of scam calls and messages per week at the moment. Gives me such rage thinking about how many folks must get caught out.

Spinet · 02/10/2024 16:14

Definitely a scam - you do have to be careful obviously, but don't feel bad as they are designed to catch you out and they are the bastards, not you.

ladymalfoy45 · 02/10/2024 16:13

I got one but it said I wouldn't be able to drive my car if I didn't pay. Rumbled the scam. That and there was no date of the alleged fine.

Freddiefan · 02/10/2024 16:11

I've had both messages. I don't own a car and I am not expecting a package. I did not open either of them. It's awful that we have to be so careful.

dementedpixie · 02/10/2024 16:11

I have a lot pretending to be from Evri. Must be hard to work out of it's a scam if you're actually expecting a delivery from them

KimberleyClark · 02/10/2024 16:10

If I’d thought about it a bit more I’d have realised it was a scam straightaway. 🤦‍♀️

As long as it wasn't your bank details or any other sensitive information

dementedpixie · 02/10/2024 16:09

What info did you input @KimberleyClark ? You should never click on links in dodgy looking texts or emails

My car reg no.

Yes I have. It's a very popular scam atm.

You need to be really mistrustful and never click on anything that comes to you in a random text or email.

Mindymomo · 02/10/2024 16:04

I got one sent on my phone, car is registered to my DH so any penalty would go to him, although we’ve never given our mobile numbers to anyone relating to car/parking. It was mentioned on the BBC Breakfast show this week being a scam, along with most texts that you have to click on a link, these are usually scams.
