Given the world conflict situation are fireworks in bad taste?

I will preface this by saying that I’m no fan of fireworks anyway especially domestic ’ displays’ consisting of endless huge bangs which scare my dog into a state of terror.

Watching the news recently it occurs to me that seeing endless bombings of innocent civilians, many of whom are children, is essentially what firework displays are emulating. Bonfire night was originally meant to celebrate the events of the gunpowder plot to blow up Westminster. Terrorism in other words.

Is it not just a monumental waste of money and in incredible poor taste to have celebrations of this sort as people are literally being killed by actual explosives and not so very far from us?

Is there a better way of holding an autumnal celebration without using explosives?

I would rather they were limited to registered displays tbh That said I don’t think you should ban all fireworks. Bonfire night , New Year’s Eve only in most places registered displays don’t last terribly long 15 minutes maybe? Most pet owners would be ok with that surely? I think the issue is irresponsible use it’s people setting them off at random hours for weeks before hand.

Did you dislocate your arm with that reach, OP?

😂😂😂

It's not about entitled pet owners, it's about the entitlement of the human race. Why is it OK to terrorise and literally frighten to death other creatures that we share the planet with. Have you any idea of the horrifying effect of fireworks on wildlife? Have you any idea of the depraved torture inflicted on defenceless creatures by kids with fireworks? I guess I'm wasting my breath because none of this means a damn thing to you, but maybe stop, think and read up on the price that's paid every year for this tradition.

Nope, the post you replied to there is specifically and only about entitled pet owners.

As I pointed out to the last person who tried to widen the scope of what was being criticised, other arguments regarding fireworks don't lend any legitimacy at all to said entitled pet owners whining about the predictable impact of their decision to get a pet in a country with a pre-existing firework festival.

InSpainTheRain · 02/10/2024 18:55

I dont think fireworks can be confused or conflated with missiles. Especially at close range. 😀 fireworks are popular all over the world and I am no fan of them, but to say ppl shouldn't have them due to war is ridiculous.

BrieHugger · 02/10/2024 18:51

SoupDragon · 02/10/2024 18:44

So, you're banning them for the celebrations of other ethnicities?

Good point. No. No issue with organised cultural displays on set dates. I’m banning the noisy ones that go off a couple of times every week (weddings) near where I live. Nobody needs a massive loud firework display at midnight on a random week night. Silent ones - no issue at all.

I'm no fan of fireworks either - to be fair, the whole historical concept of bonfire night is not exactly pleasant either but I can't see many people buying into a parallel to the extent that we shouldn't be having them.

floridaidea · 02/10/2024 18:51

YABU.
Even as a Roman Catholic, I still enjoy 5th Nov fireworks, however what I don't like is them starting throughout September and October and upsetting my dog.

AgnesX · 02/10/2024 18:48

Fireworks, apart from organised displays, are a pain, regardless of what goes on in the world.

AmeliaEarache · 02/10/2024 18:47

What is in poor taste is people trying to jump on the bandwagon of global conflict, when really they just don't like fireworks for personal reasons.

SoupDragon · 02/10/2024 18:44

BrieHugger · 02/10/2024 18:20

Loud fireworks should be on 5th November only. No issue with smaller silent ones the rest of the year. I don’t think they should be sold in supermarkets though, there should be some sort of restrictions on who can buy them and in what quantity and category.

So, you're banning them for the celebrations of other ethnicities?

Appalonia · 02/10/2024 16:55

Just don't see how the two are related. There's little enough joy and fun in the world as it is, do you want to ban EVERYTHING Just in case someone, somewhere is offended? I'm that case it's a pretty long list OP...

This is exactly what I just said to DH!

I think we're right on time! Entitled pet owners complaining are a real fixture of the Mumsnet October.

Hatty65 · 02/10/2024 18:38

I'm not a fan of fireworks.

I've rarely heard anything as ludicrous as suggesting because there are bombs in the world it might be offensive to have fireworks night.

Is there nothing that people can't work themselves up over nowadays?

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 02/10/2024 18:36

StMarieforme · 02/10/2024 18:13

I'm off to some much loved fireworks in Derbyshire on Saturday. I correlation whatsoever with a war anywhere.

I'm sure civilians being bombed relentlessly in Gaza and Lebanon will express mild annoyance at the IDF, while reserving the real anger for you and the local kids waving sparklers around. You monster.

Pulling up a chair to sit with you on the ‘certain people’ table @AgileGreenSeal Tricky time of year isn’t it, much love.

I’ll put the kettle on @MurdoMunro

Heard one last night… they go all through October in this neck of the woods.
oh well- much love to you too xx

To the people saying it's a celebration of democracy / anti-terrorism etc - twaddle! Democracy is a relatively recent innovation.

Historically, it's an anti-catholic celebration.

Well in Sussex it's a huge celebration and in Lewes in particular they are commemorating the Lewes Protestants who were burned at the stake in Lewes, these executions were part of the Marian prosecution of Protestants during the reign of Mary I. I don't think it is as simple as stating it is anti-Catholic.

Justice4Friend · 02/10/2024 18:30

Fireworks, bonfires, BBQs, pit fires, smokey huts - all need to be banned.

Ablondiebutagoody · 02/10/2024 14:10

5th November. Guy Fawkes. Its our history not some generic, wishy washy Autumnal celebration. We burn an effigy of Guy on the fire so hardly a celebration of terrorism either.

Also I frikking love fireworks. And burning stuff. Yabu.

I hate fireworks they terrify me. But I’ll happily sit inside- I agree with this post 100%

“additionally given consideration to what loud bangs and explosions may remind certain people of (PTSD etc)”

thank you.
I’m one of those “certain people”.

I love fireworks night. It’s one of the few times a year that communities gather together for a fun evening across the country. I’d be sad to lose that.

MyTaupeHare · 02/10/2024 18:23

The world is always in conflict. Did that ever stop you before?
